The Hierophant

Tarot: Saturday, September 26

A card drawn from one of three decks

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

The Hierophant

Reversed Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot
The Hierophant

Upright, the Hierophant sits between two pillars with two acolytes kneeling and the keys crossed at his feet: the tradition, the teacher, the way things are done. Reversed, the keys are on the floor and the acolytes have stood up. The card is rebellion against the established form, and it cuts two ways. It can be the honest refusal of a teaching that no longer teaches, or it can be contrarianism dressed as insight. Today you will want to reject something conventional. Before you do, ask whether you have understood it. The Hierophant reversed is only wisdom when the rejection is by somebody who could have passed the exam.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You reject the rule before you have read it. Today read it first. The Hierophant reversed is earned by someone who understood the tradition and left; the rest is just noise.

Taurus

You are the tradition and today you are being asked to question it. Question one thing. Not the whole structure, one rite that no longer serves, and let it go.

Gemini

You will argue against the teaching brilliantly and believe none of your own arguments. Today pick the one objection you actually hold. Rebellion for sport is the card's warning.

Cancer

The tradition is family and rejecting it feels like leaving. It is not. Today keep the people and drop the form that stopped meaning anything.

Leo

You will rebel loudly and want the acolytes to follow you out. Today leave quietly. The Hierophant reversed is a private disagreement first, and the following comes later or not at all.

Virgo

You will find the flaw in the doctrine and correct it rather than leave it. Today leaving is allowed. Some teachings are not improved; they are outgrown.

Libra

You will try to keep the tradition and reject it at once. Choose today. Half-leaving the temple is the contrarian's version, and the card does not respect it.

Scorpio

You rejected this teaching years ago and still attend. Today stop attending. The Hierophant reversed asks for the honest break, not the private disdain.

Sagittarius

Rejecting authority is your reflex and the card asks whether this authority deserves it. Today check. Some teachers are wrong; some are just older than you.

Capricorn

You uphold the form and today the form has failed. Say so. The Hierophant reversed is not disloyalty when the institution stopped doing what it was for.

Aquarius

This is your card reversed and you will enjoy it too much. Today the rebellion has to be about something. Name the teaching you reject and what you would put there instead.

Pisces

You will drift away from the tradition without deciding to. Decide today. The Hierophant reversed is a choice, and the drifting version is just absence.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will reject the rule that costs you and keep the ones that pay. Today reject on principle or not at all. The card can tell the difference and so can everyone else.

Ox

You keep the tradition because it is the tradition. Today ask what it is for. If the answer is nothing, the keys on the floor are yours to leave there.

Tiger

You will kick the keys across the room. Today set them down. The Hierophant reversed is rejection, and rejection with a temper is just the same power in a different chair.

Rabbit

You disagree with the teaching and have never said so. Say so today, to one person. The acolyte who stands up quietly is still standing up.

Dragon

You will overthrow the Hierophant and take the chair. That is not the card. Today the chair is empty on purpose, and the rebellion is against sitting in it.

Snake

You left the tradition long ago and let everyone believe you stayed. Today the reversal asks for honesty about it. The quiet departure is over; make it plain.

Horse

Rejecting authority is easy for you and understanding it is not. Today understand the teaching before you leave it. Then leave, if it still deserves leaving.

Goat

You will need someone to agree before you reject the form. Today reject it alone. The Hierophant reversed is one acolyte standing up, not a vote.

Monkey

You will mock the tradition and stay inside it. Today either leave or stop mocking. The card is the honest break, and the joke from the pew is not that.

Rooster

You will reject the doctrine because it is imprecise. Today ask whether it is wrong. Imprecise is a correction; wrong is the reversal, and they are different departures.

Dog

You will stay because leaving would hurt the teacher. Today the teacher is not the teaching. Keep your loyalty to the person and put the keys down.

Pig

You will leave the tradition because it became inconvenient. Today check the reason. The Hierophant reversed is earned by conviction, and convenience is a different exit.
