A card drawn from one of three decks

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

The Chariot

Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot
The Chariot

The Chariot has two sphinxes, one black and one white, and no reins. The driver holds a wand and steers by will alone, which is the card's whole argument: the forces pulling you are real and opposed, and the thing that keeps them moving in one direction is you. Today has momentum in it after a stall. Use it for what needs a decision made and held rather than what needs a discussion. The Chariot goes forward or it goes nowhere. It does not do sideways.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

This is your card in its purest form and the danger is the obvious one. Speed with no reins is a crash, not a victory. Choose the destination before you start and do not change it mid-street.

Taurus

Momentum is not your natural state, so when it arrives you distrust it. Do not. Today the ground is moving in your favour and standing still on it is the one way to waste the card.

Gemini

Two sphinxes pulling different ways is your daily condition. The Chariot does not resolve it by choosing one. It holds both and drives. Pick the direction and let the argument continue in the back.

Cancer

You will want to know where the road goes before you take it. The card does not tell you. Move anyway, at a pace you can sustain, and bring the shell along rather than leaving it behind.

Leo

The driver is crowned, armoured and alone, which suits you until the alone part. Today's win is yours to take and nobody is going to share it. Take it cleanly and the sharing comes later.

Virgo

You will check the wheels before you go and then check them again. Check them once. The Chariot rewards the decision made at eight in the morning over the perfect one made at four.

Libra

Two opposed forces held in balance is what you do for a living, and the card asks you to add motion to it. Balance while moving is a different skill from balance while standing. Practise it today.

Scorpio

You control by knowing what everybody wants. The Chariot controls by not caring. Set the direction without consulting anyone's motives and see how much faster it goes.

Sagittarius

You have the momentum and you always have the momentum. What you lack is the wand: the single point of will that keeps the two beasts pulling the same way. Today, hold one intention through to evening.

Capricorn

Willpower is your native currency and today it converts directly. Spend it on the thing you have been approaching sensibly for a month. Sensible is over. Drive.

Aquarius

You would rather redesign the chariot than drive it. Drive it. The thing works as built, the road is open now, and the redesign can happen at the far end.

Pisces

The reins are missing and you will feel that as terrifying rather than freeing. It is neither. Decide on a direction that is yours and the two forces sort themselves out behind you.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You move fast and change direction faster, which the card forbids. One road today, chosen by where it ends rather than by which one is open. Cleverness is the wand here, not the wheels.

Ox

Momentum arrives and your instinct is to test whether it will hold before you lean on it. Lean on it. The Chariot does not stall under weight; it stalls under hesitation.

Tiger

This card and you are the same animal. The one thing it adds is the wand. Drive with a purpose you could state in a sentence, and the charge becomes a journey instead of an incident.

Rabbit

You will step aside for the chariot rather than get in it. Get in it. The day has movement to give and it goes to whoever takes the driver's seat, not to whoever waits politely by the road.

Dragon

You have been driving two things at once and calling it capacity. Today choose one. The card is explicit that the sphinxes pull together only when there is a single will above them.

Snake

Force is not your medium, so you will look for the indirect route. Today there is none. Take the road straight, say what you are doing, and arrive before anybody has worked out a counter.

Horse

Open road, and you have the speed. What you lack is the stop. Decide the destination now, because the Chariot will happily carry you a long way past it.

Goat

You would rather someone else held the reins. Nobody is holding them. The card gives the driver's seat to you specifically, and today being carried is not on offer.

Monkey

You will try to drive both sphinxes in interesting directions to see what happens. The card is not an experiment. Point it, hold it, and save the cleverness for the next puzzle.

Rooster

You have the discipline the card asks for and you spend it on the details of the harness. Aim it at the direction instead. A perfectly maintained chariot standing still is the failure mode.

Dog

You will drive wherever you were asked to drive. Today ask who set the destination and whether you agree with it. Loyalty to a route you did not choose is the Chariot going in circles.

Pig

Momentum arrives and you will enjoy it rather than use it. Enjoy it for an hour. Then aim it at the one thing you have been meaning to move for a month.
