Runes: October 2026

A rune from each of the four scripts

Laguz is water: a medium you can cross and cannot control. October asks you to work with a current rather than against one. Something this month is larger than your ability to direct it, whether that is a market, an institution or a mood in the people around you. The rune does not counsel surrender. It counsels navigation. Learn where the flow is going before you commit the crossing, and remember that the sea is indifferent rather than hostile, which is a more useful thing to know than it sounds. Decide the crossing point before you commit, and accept that the current will still be there when you are done arguing with it.

Lǫgr is water: force in motion answering to its own gradient. October runs on a current you did not set and cannot redirect. The rune is not warning you off the crossing, it is telling you to read the water first. Where is it actually going, how fast, and where does it become shallow enough to stand. Somebody who understands the gradient crosses safely in a place that looks worse than the one that drowns people. Take the month's flow as given and spend your effort on the route rather than on the river. A crossing chosen well in rough water beats a crossing chosen badly in calm, and the month will offer you both.

Lagu is water, and the Anglo-Saxon poem is unusually anxious about it: seemingly endless to men, if they venture on an unsteady ship, and the sea-waves terrify them. A medium you have committed to and cannot steer. October puts you on something already underway that you cannot simply step off. The counsel is about the vessel rather than the sea. Check what you are crossing in before the weather rather than after, and stop assessing the water, which will do as it does regardless of your opinion of it. Spend the month on the hull rather than on the forecast, since only one of the two answers to you.

Úr is earth: the ground that receives the dead and grows the next thing, and the kennings hold both without apology. October closes on soil rather than on harvest. Something is finishing and being turned back in, which is neither loss nor waste but the mechanism by which anything grows at all. Practically, this is a month for composting rather than building: end what is over, and let the material go back into the ground it came from rather than propping it up through another season. What you plant afterwards will be better for it, and the ground will be ready sooner than you expect. Resist the instinct to prop something through one more season because ending it feels like waste. The ground is not wasting it.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

Water: a medium you can cross and cannot control. Read the current before committing to the crossing. Move once and let it stand.

Taurus

A flow larger than your ability to direct it. Navigate rather than resist; the sea is indifferent rather than hostile.

Gemini

A current going somewhere. Find out where before you commit, which is the step you usually skip. Say the one sentence that settles it.

Cancer

Water carries and drowns without malice. Learn the gradient before you trust it with anything you value. Tend it rather than worrying at it.

Leo

Something larger than you is in motion. Working with it costs you nothing you actually need. No audience is required for this one.

Virgo

A medium you cannot control and can read. Spend today on the reading rather than the crossing. Check it improves the work, not the record.

Libra

A current you did not set. Choose the crossing point rather than trying to still the water. State your own position once, plainly.

Scorpio

Deep water and you are comfortable in it. The caution is that comfort is not the same as control.

Sagittarius

A crossing that rewards knowing the water. Do the survey before the swim, this once. Choose the direction before the speed.

Capricorn

Something uncontrollable is in motion. Build for the current rather than against it. Decide where it ends before you begin.

Aquarius

A flow that answers to its own gradient rather than your model. Update the model. Deal with the person, not the principle.

Pisces

Water is your element and the caution is direction. Currents go somewhere; make sure it is where you want.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

A current you did not set. Read where it goes before committing anything to it. Take the opening and leave the surplus.

Ox

Water you cannot control. Find the shallow crossing rather than fighting the flow. Steady beats sudden here. The flow will outlast the argument.

Tiger

A current going somewhere fast. Check the direction before joining it. Once, deliberately, and then stop. Gradient decides, not force.

Rabbit

Deep water and no malice in it. Learn the gradient before trusting it. Silence will be read as consent.

Dragon

Something larger than you is moving. Work with it; that costs nothing you need. Set the direction and delegate the rest.

Snake

A medium you can read and not control. Read it today rather than crossing. Consider whether it is more useful said.

Horse

A current you will join immediately. Check where it goes first. Pick one before the energy picks for you.

Goat

Water carries you easily. Notice you are being carried somewhere before you arrive. Ask before you are emptied.

Monkey

A current you will try to outwit. It answers only to gradient. Work with that. Ask whether it needs solving at all.

Rooster

Uncontrollable flow and you will want a plan. Build for the current rather than against it. Narrower question, not a firmer one.

Dog

A flow indifferent to fairness. Navigate it rather than objecting to it. Aim it at what actually happened.

Pig

Water is your element and the caution is direction. Being carried is not the same as going somewhere.
