Strength combinations
Strength measures how much the querent can carry, and the partner shows what has to be carried. Here is how card VIII reads beside each of the other cards in the deck, upright and reversed.
Card meaning: StrengthCombinations are common patterns, not rules
The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.
Most pairs with Strength are reassuring, because the card answers difficulty with patience instead of force. Beside a hard partner it rarely removes the problem. It shows the querent able to meet it: the Tower's crisis survived and rebuilt from, the Devil's attachment faced with the willpower to master it, the Five of Pentacles' lean stretch carried with steady courage. Beside an easy partner it adds staying power, so the Magician's plan gets the endurance to last and the Star's hope gets the nerve to stay open.
The woman in white holds the red lion's jaws with bare hands and a garland of roses, and that picture explains why the card works slowly. Strength cannot be hurried. Even its best pairs favour results that arrive through calm, steady effort, and the Chariot, its neighbour in the deck, makes the difference plain: the Chariot drives by will and can burn out, while Strength holds the road through patience.
Reversed, the lion gets loose. Self-doubt, rage, fear and lost control come into the pair, and Water cards such as The Moon, Death or the Eight of Cups make them worse, turning uncertainty into anxiety and a departure into flight.
Strength is Fire and Leo. Wands and the Fire Majors share its heat, Swords feed it, Pentacles sit beside it neutrally and Cups pull against it. Its number is eight, and adding eight to a numbered partner gives the pair's quintessence; a total past twenty-two is reduced by adding its digits.
Strength beside other cards in a spread
Beside Major Arcana cards
The Magician supplies skill and Strength the stamina to use it; both wear the lemniscate. The Fool gets the nerve to leap with self-control, and The Star the courage to heal after a hard stretch. The Tower brings a crisis the querent has the calm to survive, and The Devil a temptation that soft power can master. The Hanged Man and Death ask for acceptance, which upright Strength gives and reversed Strength cannot.
Beside Wands
Wands share Strength's Fire, so the pairs are bold and need the card's patience to keep them from burning out. The Ace, Page and Knight bring a spark or a charge with staying power behind it, and the Queen and King lead by persuasion. The Seven defends a position without anger, the Nine endures to the end. The Five becomes a contest won by composure; reversed, it settles into compromise.
Beside Cups
Water is contrary to Fire, so Cups pairs test whether passion and feeling can steady each other. Upright, they mostly can: the Two is an equal partnership, the Ten a home held together by a calm temper, the Nine a wish earned through self-control. The Five is a loss met with courage. With Strength reversed the Cups turn harder, and the Eight becomes an exit driven by anger or fear.
Beside Swords
Air feeds Fire, and Swords pairs ask for courage in thought and speech. The Ace brings clarity acted on with tact, the Queen honesty said kindly, the King fair authority. The Three, the Five and the Seven through Ten bring pain, conflict or fear, and upright Strength gives the steadiness to face it. Reversed, the Eight's trap opens into a breakthrough and the Nine's sleepless worry eases into calm confidence.
Beside Pentacles
Earth sits neutrally beside Strength's Fire, and the coins give its patience a practical result. The Four builds a solid base through thrift, the Seven waits for a slow harvest, the Eight turns discipline into visible skill, the Nine shows independence earned over years. The Five is the one hard upright partner, a cold stretch carried by courage. Reversed Strength beside the Eight shows good work done by someone who doubts it.
Beside court cards
Courts carry no quintessence, so the reading turns on character. The Pages bring a new start, Strength the patience it needs to grow. The Knights act fast or steadily, and Strength keeps them in the saddle. Queens add empathy, honesty or care held with a steady spine. Kings show authority used gently, and beside the King of Swords reversed, calm resilience outlasts a cold or domineering person.
Beside a card of the same number
Strength is eight, the number of the four Eights, and every one of those pairs has The Tower as its quintessence: endurance tested by sudden change. The Eight of Wands brings fast events held with a steady hand. The Eight of Cups is a considered departure made without bitterness. With the Eight of Swords, the will to step out of the trap is already there, and the Eight of Pentacles turns discipline into craft.
Beside reversed cards
With Strength upright, a reversed partner usually means a conflict or a fear easing under patience. The reversed Five of Wands and Five of Swords wind down into compromise, the reversed Seven of Swords brings a hidden matter to light, the reversed Devil frees the querent from a dependency. The reversed Fool's rashness meets a calm hand. Reversed Justice or a reversed King of Swords is harder: the querent keeps their dignity against unfairness or a cold authority.
Strength with every card
Each row gives the outlook in all four states, read from Strength's side: Strength first, then its partner.
The Empress
Warm care backed by calm courage: love, family or work held together with a steady hand.
