The Hierophant and Strength
A teaching from outside meets courage from within. The pair asks whether the querent's discipline comes from rules they were given or from a gentler strength of their own.
How the two cards meet
Red roses appear in both pictures. One of the two monks kneeling before the Hierophant wears a robe patterned with them, and in Strength a garland of red roses runs from the woman's waist to the lion whose jaws she closes with bare hands. Waite called that garland the sweet yoke and light burden of Divine Law, which is close to what the Hierophant teaches: rules that hold because they are accepted. The elder gives the doctrine, the procedure, the ethical code; Strength shows the patience and self-control that let a person live by it without force. Together they describe discipline learned through a teacher and then made one's own.
Death is the quintessence, thirteen being five plus eight, and it puts an ending under the pair: an old habit, a temper or a fear that has to be released before mastery becomes real. Earth and Fire are neutral to each other, so each card keeps its full meaning.
Combinations are common patterns, not rules
The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.
Four ways the pair can fall
Both upright
Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: YesDiscipline learned from a good teacher becomes inner strength; steady, principled progress.
Here authority and gentleness work together. The upright Hierophant offers mentorship, a code of conduct and a proven method, and Strength brings the courage, compassion and self-discipline to follow it through hard tasks. A coach, trainer or teacher may play a central role, and the querent learns to manage instincts and emotions the way the woman calms the red lion. For a couple, passion is matched by maturity: deep attraction, shared values and the willingness to accept serious responsibilities such as marriage or a family. Work rewards endurance, leadership earned through accumulated experience and the persuasive skill to negotiate well. Financial stability comes from self-belief, firm control over spending and conservative, tested ways of earning, and a respected person in the community may lend support.
Advice
Find a teacher or coach for the skill that tests your patience most, and commit to a fixed practice schedule with them.
The Hierophant upright, Strength reversed
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yetConfidence has drained away, and the structure and counsel of an experienced guide are what restore it.
The lion is loose and the woman has stepped back. Reversed Strength shows insecurity, fear, low self-esteem and a struggle to keep emotions in check; sometimes it shows up as anger, sometimes as plain powerlessness. Beside her, the upright Hierophant holds out a mentor, a support group, a recognised programme, a routine that holds even on bad days. Reversed Strength advises professional help with self-respect, and the Hierophant points to the qualified person who can give it. If one partner dominates the other or the relationship is volatile, the pair favours outside counsel and clear agreed rules over another round of conflict, and a person who feels unsafe should seek help from someone they trust. At work, accumulated stress and shattered confidence make ordinary problems feel insurmountable; formal training, a mentor or a lighter role during recovery helps. Impulsive spending needs firm, conventional budgeting rules.
Advice
Ask for structured help this week, from a counsellor, a coach or an experienced colleague, and follow their plan before improvising your own.
The Hierophant reversed, Strength upright
Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Leans yesBreaking from outdated rules with calm courage instead of open revolt.
The reversed Hierophant wants out of a dogma, a rigid workplace or an inherited belief, and upright Strength makes the exit a quiet one. Diplomacy, patience and inner resilience let the querent refuse what no longer fits without burning every bridge. A crisis of faith becomes an independent search for truth that is carried out with self-respect. In a partnership, an unconventional arrangement or a disagreement with the family's expectations holds because both people treat each other with tenderness and respect. At work, overly strict management is met with steady composure and well-argued proposals, so innovative ideas get a hearing they would lose in open disobedience. Money decisions that leave the conservative path still benefit from self-control.
Advice
Say plainly which rule you will no longer follow, without raising your voice, and then keep to your decision.
Both reversed
Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: Leans noAuthority and anger feed each other: abuse of power, harsh rules or reckless revolt.
The keys and the rose garland both lie unused. Reversed Strength names aggression, rage and the abuse of power, and the reversed Hierophant names dogmatism, callousness and a lack of moral compass, so rules may be enforced harshly by someone who cannot control their temper, or rebellion may turn violent in word or deed. In love, one partner may control or manipulate the other in the name of tradition, or both may be trapped in a stifling routine full of resentment; outside help and firm boundaries matter more than any card's verdict here. At work, a domineering manager or the querent's own outbursts lead to open conflict, unprofessional behaviour and stalled development. Money is lost through impulsiveness and stubbornness together. Recovery starts with calm and with support from someone outside the situation.
Advice
Step away from the argument before replying, and bring in a neutral person if the same conflict has come back more than twice.
When this reading may not apply
When the question is about health or fitness, the upright Hierophant often appears as a physical mentor such as a trainer, nutritionist or coach, and Strength as the patience to stay with the programme; both work beside medical advice, never in place of it. If the querent is the one in authority, as a parent, manager or teacher, the reversed-reversed state is a warning about their own temper. In a past position, the pair can describe a strict upbringing that left strength or fear behind. Where a relationship involves intimidation, read the cards as a prompt to seek support, not as advice to endure.
