The Empress and Death
A mother of the harvest and an armoured skeleton on a white horse carrying a banner with a white rose. Together they are the cycle of the seasons: something ends so that something else can grow.
How the two cards meet
Death clears the field and the Empress plants it. On its own, the thirteenth card is the ending that fertilizes whatever grows in its place, and its own reading of change is new life after winter; the Empress, whose season is spring, is that new life. Side by side they describe a full cycle: a job, a relationship or a way of living closes, and creativity, family life or prosperity follows. Death usually comes first in the story, and the Empress shows what the cleared ground can produce.
Neither card is literal here. Death means transformation, never physical death, and the Empress's birth can be a child, a project or a new self. Water and Earth are friendly elements, so the ending and the growth support each other and the transition tends to be organic. Death's timing is about thirty days. The quintessence is the Tower (III plus XIII makes XVI): under the gentle turning of seasons lies a sudden break that makes room.
Combinations are common patterns, not rules
The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.
Four ways the pair can fall
Both upright
Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Leans yesAn ending makes room for new growth: rebirth after a clearing, abundance after a farewell.
Winter gives way to spring. Death completes a stage, the querent lets go of the outdated, and the Empress brings the fertility and creativity that fill the space. A relationship phase may close and the bond reach a new level, sometimes the decision to start a family, or a painful breakup may make room for a healthier, more nurturing love. At work, leaving a long-held job or finishing a project leads to a creative, more satisfying role. Financially, Death's release from old debts or a business restructuring meets the Empress's prosperity, so the new phase can be more abundant than the old. The child in Death's picture offers the rider flowers, and that acceptance is the attitude the pair asks for. The change can hurt, and growth follows it.
Advice
Mark the ending deliberately, with a conversation, a letter or a small ritual, and then plant one concrete new thing.
The Empress upright, Death reversed
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yetNew growth is ready, but you are still holding on to what has already ended.
Spring is outside and the querent keeps the door shut. The upright Empress offers fertility, love and creative energy, while reversed Death resists the ending that would make room for them: fear of the unknown, clinging, a refusal to let go. A person may stay in a relationship that has run its course while a warmer life waits, or keep caring for a situation that no longer needs them. At work, a creative opportunity appears and unfinished business or fear of losing the current position holds it back. In money, the Empress points toward growth, while reversed Death warns that conservatism and fear of loss lead to stagnation and missed opportunities. Reversed Death advises letting go gradually if not all at once. Once the old thing is released, the new can grow.
Advice
Choose one thing from the old situation to let go of this month, and give its time to what you want to grow.
The Empress reversed, Death upright
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Leans noA necessary ending arrives while you are depleted, and grief or burnout needs care.
Change comes regardless, and it meets a tired gardener. Death upright closes a chapter: a job, a relationship, a role in the family. The reversed Empress shows exhaustion, self-neglect or care that has turned controlling, so the ending lands hard. A parent may struggle as grown children leave home, and the reversed Empress warns against a reluctance to let them go. A romantic phase ends and the querent feels empty instead of renewed. At work, an unexpected departure comes during burnout, and finances may suffer from poor management during the transition. Death insists that the release is necessary, and the reversed Empress asks the querent to look after themselves through it.
Advice
Let the ending happen, and arrange practical support for yourself, meals, rest, someone to talk to, for the first month.
Both reversed
Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: NoClinging and depletion: nothing ends and nothing grows, and the stagnation drains everyone.
The field stays unploughed. Reversed Death refuses the change that is needed, and the reversed Empress brings lack, dependency and blocked creativity, so the querent holds on to an exhausted situation while feeling empty inside it. A relationship may continue out of habit and fear of separation, problems repeating in a vicious cycle, with care alternating between smothering and absent. Fertility or family questions may feel stuck. At work, outdated methods and burnout combine, and money stays frozen through fear of loss and poor management. Reversed Death states plainly that the old path no longer works; admitting what has ended, with someone's advice, is the first step.
Advice
List what you fear would happen if you let the old situation go, and discuss that list with a counsellor.
When this reading may not apply
Death in this pair never means physical death, and in pregnancy questions it does not mean loss; it describes a life change around a birth or a project. If the Empress is the significator, Death describes the transition she is going through, often a role change within the family. When the question concerns a parent whose children are leaving home, the pair speaks directly to that change. In a past position, it often describes an ending that made the present abundance possible.
