Temperance and the Five of Cups

A mourner in a black cloak looks down at three spilled cups; an angel's stream runs from cup to cup without losing a drop. The pair is about how grief heals, and how long that takes.

How the two cards meet

The contrast is in the water. The Five of Cups has three cups knocked over, red and green liquid soaking into bare ground, and a figure in a black cloak too absorbed in the loss to see the two cups still standing behind. Temperance keeps its water in motion between two cups and spills none of it. As the Major card, Temperance names the process: healing, remedy, patience, the reconciliation of opposites. The Five names what is being healed, a loss of a person, a relationship or a project.

Together they usually describe mourning that can be worked through, slowly, with the remaining cups gradually brought back into view. The Sun, card XIX, is the pair's quintessence, the warmth that returns once mourning has done its work. Temperance's Fire, through Sagittarius, sits against the Five's Water, and that contrary relation keeps the grief from flooding the reading while also keeping the healing from feeling quick.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Grief is real and Temperance offers a slow remedy: feel the loss, then turn toward the two cups left standing.

A loss has happened and the mourning is still fresh. The Five shows regret and the difficulty of seeing what remains; Temperance does not hurry it, and asks for calm, self-care and a time of cleansing. The angel's unbroken stream is the opposite of the spilled cups, and it shows the steady pace at which the querent can recover. Someone grieving a relationship needs time before dating, and the pair favours letting go of old grievances without forcing a new start. A couple who feel lonely within their bond can rebuild mutual understanding through patient, equal conversation. A failed project or a bad investment hurts, and the upright angel asks for a review of expenses and a return to a balanced plan instead of a dramatic recovery move. Health questions point to rest and gentle routines alongside proper care.

Advice

List what is still standing after the loss, the people, skills and savings you have left, and keep that list where you will see it daily.

Temperance upright, Five of Cups reversed

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Yes

Healing is under way: acceptance returns, and Temperance keeps the recovery calm and steady.

Grief starts to loosen. The reversed Five is acceptance, forgiveness and hope returning, and upright Temperance blends those into a stable recovery without relapse or rush. In Smith's Five the river runs toward a stone bridge and a castle, and with Temperance upright that crossing is made at walking pace. A relationship that went through a hard period can find its footing again through forgiveness and honest acknowledgement of mistakes; a single querent is ready to meet someone new with old wounds tended. At work, conflicts with colleagues are settled, perceived failures turn out to be lessons, and a long-term project can start on firmer ground. Money recovers after a crisis through careful use of what remains. Temperance is the card of remedy, and beside a reversed Five it shows the remedy working.

Advice

Make one gesture of forgiveness this week, to someone else or to yourself, and then put your attention on a plan for the next three months.

Temperance reversed, Five of Cups upright

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Loss meets imbalance: grief is numbed with excess or left to fester, and the remaining cups stay unseen.

The grief has no container. The upright Five shows sorrow, regret and dwelling on what spilled, and reversed Temperance removes the moderation that could help: excess, restlessness, a lack of self-discipline. The querent may drink, spend or work too much to avoid feeling the loss, or swing between numbness and outbursts. Self-pity deepens the hopelessness. Partners in a relationship that has lost its shared emotional ground argue instead of listening, and one gives far more than the other. After a breakup, the impulse to reach out comes from unprocessed hurt, and the cards advise against acting on it yet. Work brings stress and conflict around a failed project, and money suffers from impulsive attempts to recover losses quickly. Reversed Temperance asks for small steps, and the Five asks for the grief to be acknowledged first.

Advice

Remove one habit you use to avoid the loss, and book a conversation with a counsellor or a trusted friend about what happened.

Both reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Recovery has started but runs too fast, and the querent moves on before the lesson is learned.

Moving forward is the right direction, taken at the wrong speed. Release from the past, a new perspective and readiness for new relationships belong to the reversed Five; impatience and a habit of going to extremes belong to reversed Temperance. A person getting over heartbreak may jump into a rebound or rush a reconciliation before old resentments are settled. Sometimes the reversed Five shows its other face, a reluctance to move on dressed up as being fine. At work the querent drops the failed plan and takes up a new one in a hurry, and the old errors come back with it. Money recovers and is spent again too soon. Nothing is wrong with the healing except its tempo, and tempo is the one thing reversed Temperance cannot supply.

Advice

Before starting the new relationship or project, name one mistake from the last one and decide how you will avoid repeating it.

When this reading may not apply

When Temperance is the significator, the querent is the healer or the steady presence beside someone else's grief, and the Five describes the person they are supporting. In questions about getting back together, the pair asks the querent to finish grieving before deciding anything, whatever the state. Drawn for the past, it often describes a loss already worked through. If the grief is about a death, the cards describe the mourning process and say nothing about anyone's health; serious or lasting depression belongs with a professional.
