Strength and Death
A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse past a fallen king; a woman in white keeps a lion calm with her hands. The pair asks whether the querent has the nerve to let something end.
How the two cards meet
Death brings an ending that cannot be bargained with: the close of a job, a relationship, a habit or a way of life, so that something new can grow in its place. Strength supplies the courage to face it. The armoured rider carries a black flag with a white five-petalled rose, a promise of renewal, and beneath the hooves a king lies with his crown trampled, power that would not bend. Strength's woman bends without breaking. She calms the lion without a weapon, and in this pair her gentleness is what lets the querent accept the change instead of fighting it.
Strength's Fire and Death's Water are contrary elements, so the two cards dampen each other, and the ending tends to feel slower and heavier than either card alone suggests. Eight and thirteen make twenty-one: the World is the quintessence, the completion that the whole hard process is moving toward.
Combinations are common patterns, not rules
The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.
Four ways the pair can fall
Both upright
Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Leans yesAn ending faced with courage: the querent lets go cleanly and starts the next stage strong.
A chapter closes, and the querent meets the loss with composure. Death marks the completion of a stage and the conscious farewell to the past; Strength gives the inner calm to grieve without falling apart and the self-respect to walk away from what no longer works. Change hurts here and does not break anyone. A relationship may end a phase and move to a deeper level, or end so that a healthier one can begin, and the querent makes the bold decision that Death asks for without bitterness. At work, a long-held position or a project comes to an end, and the querent has the confidence to step into a new role or field. Debts can be cleared, a business restructured, and old money habits replaced, with Strength's discipline keeping the new start stable. Death's timing is around thirty days, so the process may take about a month.
Advice
Mark the ending with one deliberate act, a conversation, a letter or a cleared desk, and then decide your first step into what comes next.
Strength upright, Death reversed
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yetThe querent has the strength to change, but something old is still being held on to.
All the inner resources are in place except the willingness to let go. Reversed Death clings to a relationship, a job or a habit that has run its course, out of fear of the unknown; upright Strength shows that the querent is capable of the change and is not yet using that capacity for it. Courage is being spent on putting up with the situation instead of leaving it. A couple may keep repeating the same problems, with the querent patient to a fault, and patience here becomes a way of delaying the inevitable. At work, unfinished business and fear of losing the current position hold back a move the querent is equipped to make. Money stays in a conservative holding pattern that slowly costs more than it saves. Reversed Death's advice is to let go gradually and to name the fear behind the delay. Strength makes that possible.
Advice
Name one outdated habit, belief or commitment and release it this week, even if the bigger change stays on hold for now.
Strength reversed, Death upright
Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: Leans noChange is coming whatever happens, and fear or anger makes the transition rough.
Death moves forward on its own schedule, and the querent's nerve fails. Reversed Strength reacts to the ending with insecurity and powerlessness, or with rage and lashing out, sometimes both in turn. The change is right and the reaction to it causes most of the damage. A relationship ending or changing completely can bring outbursts, a struggle for control, or a fearful dependence that makes the parting harder for everyone. A sudden departure from a job may hit the querent's confidence hard, and accumulated stress can make the next step feel impossible. In money, the end of an income or an obligation may trigger reckless or panicked spending. Under the rider's horse a bishop meets him willingly while a maiden turns her face away, and reversed Strength asks for support from outside so the querent can be the one who faces him.
Advice
Pick one steady support, a friend, a counsellor or a group, and lean on it through the transition instead of going it alone.
Both reversed
Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: NoNothing ends and nothing heals: fear of change and a lost sense of control keep the querent stuck.
Here resistance has weakness for company. Reversed Death refuses to release the old; reversed Strength lacks the confidence to try. A relationship that has run its course keeps going in a draining cycle, with grievances unforgiven and outbursts in place of honest talk. Fear of losses freezes money decisions while debts grow. At work, outdated methods and unfinished business remain, and the querent feels too depleted to push for change. Everything seems motionless, and that stillness feeds the self-doubt. Reversed Death advises naming which areas need radical change and why accepting it is so hard, and reversed Strength adds professional help where self-respect has worn thin.
Advice
Choose the smallest possible ending, one task dropped or one tie loosened, and complete it this week to prove change can be survived.
When this reading may not apply
Death in this pair does not mean physical death; it speaks of endings in roles, habits and relationships, and Strength describes how the querent meets them. If the ending has already happened, the pair reads as recovery: Strength upright shows the querent rebuilding, Strength reversed shows grief or anger still raw. If the querent wants to end something with a person who controls or frightens them, reversed Strength points to safety and support first. In an advice position the cards say let it end, and be gentle with yourself while it does. Around a loss or bereavement, the pair speaks only of the querent's resilience and of the support they need.
