Justice and the King of Pentacles

A king in a vine-covered robe holds a coin and a sceptre before his castle, and a judge holds a sword and a scale. The pair asks whether money and power are being used honestly.

How the two cards meet

Pamela Colman Smith's King of Pentacles sits on a throne carved with bulls and flowering plants, his green robe covered in grapes and vines, a golden pentacle in one hand and a sceptre in the other, one foot resting on a stone, a castle and fertile fields behind him. Justice sits on her own throne between two pillars, sword pointed upward, scale level. Two seated rulers, then: one governs wealth, the other governs whether wealth was gained and used fairly.

Justice is the Major card and sets the standard, the King shows the power it is applied to, business acumen, a large income, an employer, an investor or the querent's own authority over money. Earth and Air are contrary, so the King's instinct to protect and grow resources and Justice's demand for impartiality can pull apart. Upright, they meet in ethical business; reversed, the gap between them is where corruption and loss of status appear.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Leans yes

Authority and integrity together: honest business, fair contracts and wealth that holds up to scrutiny.

Money and ethics agree. The King of Pentacles brings business acumen, long-term investment and the ability to acquire and preserve wealth, and Justice brings balanced transactions, formal agreements and decisions taken after careful analysis. A large contract negotiated fairly, a business that passes an audit, an investment backed by sound figures or a leader who pays people what they have earned fits this state. Income is proportional to effort, and the King's generosity toward the people he supports follows the same fair measure. For a committed couple, the pair describes a stable, protective relationship where finances are shared openly and the King's material support comes with mutual respect; Justice can mark a formal step such as marriage or a property agreement. At work it favours a promotion to responsibility, a partnership with a reliable backer or a negotiation with a senior figure who deals straightforwardly. The bulls on his throne and the level scale make the same point: steady, honest work builds what lasts.

Advice

Before the next big financial decision, have the figures checked independently and keep the agreement fully on paper.

Justice upright, King of Pentacles reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: Leans no

Greed or reckless money handling meets an audit: consequences and a loss of standing.

Here the accounting turns against the King. Reversed, the King of Pentacles brings greed, financial recklessness, an overbearing need to control and sometimes dishonest actions or corruption; upright Justice brings accountability and consequences proportional to the deeds. An audit, a tax review, a lawsuit or a board decision can expose poor budgeting or self-serving choices, with a loss of status and reputation to follow. The querent may be the one held to account, or may be dealing with someone in power who is. In relationships, financial dependence or control by one partner is named for what it is, and Justice demands transparency and a fair balance. With money, the reversed King asks for an end to careless budgeting, and Justice confirms that the bill comes due. Owning the mistakes now limits the damage.

Advice

Bring your accounts up to date and disclose any problem to the relevant party yourself, with a plan to correct it.

Justice reversed, King of Pentacles upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

A solid, honest business or provider faces unfair rules, bias or a dishonest competitor.

Bent rules threaten a well-run enterprise. Reversed Justice brings dishonest competition, legal troubles, biased decisions and bureaucratic hurdles, while the upright King of Pentacles stands for established resources, experience and steady management. A licence refused for unclear reasons, a competitor making false claims, a regulator acting inconsistently or contract terms altered after signing all fit. The King's reserves, experience and organisational skill put him in a position to defend himself properly. Bringing in a lawyer early, as reversed Justice advises for legal issues, keeps the dispute from eating into those reserves. In love, a stable, providing relationship can face outside interference or an unfair claim, such as a dispute with a former partner over money.

Advice

Retain a specialist lawyer or accountant now, before the dispute grows, and let them handle the formal replies.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Power without accountability: corruption, financial control and dishonest dealing.

Nobody holds the sceptre to account. The reversed King of Pentacles brings greed, abuse of power, poor money management and neglect of others' well-being, and reversed Justice brings corruption, deception and the absence of law and order. Together they describe a business where profits are hidden, an employer who treats staff unfairly and avoids responsibility, or an investment scheme built on misinformation. In relationships the pair can describe financial control by one partner, restriction of freedom and a refusal to discuss it. Losses, a damaged reputation and legal trouble are real risks. Recovery begins with the honest self-reflection the reversed King asks for.

Advice

If you depend financially on someone or something in this picture, build an independent reserve, even a small one, and get advice on your rights.

When this reading may not apply

When the King is an actual employer, banker, investor, parent or wealthy partner, Justice weighs how fairly the dealings with him go; the querent's part is what they check, sign or refuse. If the querent is the King, the pair is a direct question about their own integrity with money and authority. In the outcome position upright, it favours a fair settlement in a business or financial dispute. As an obstacle, even the upright King can mean that someone's power makes a fair hearing harder to get.
