Justice combinations

Justice weighs whatever lies next to it, and the partner shows what is on the scales. Here is how card XI reads beside each of the other cards in the deck, upright and reversed.

Card meaning: Justice

First card: Upright / Reversed
Second card: Upright / Reversed

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Justice turns any pair into an accounting. She sits between two pillars, sword raised, golden scales level and no blindfold, and the card beside her names the matter being weighed: a bond with the Two of Cups or the Lovers, often made official; a ruling with the King of Swords, who may be the judge himself; a sudden exposure with the Tower. Upright, the result tends to match what the querent has actually done, which makes this a reassuring card for honest people and an uncomfortable one for anyone hiding something.

Upright Justice is hardest on reversed partners whose fault is a misuse of skill, money or time. The reversed Magician's spin is weighed and found wanting, the reversed King of Pentacles meets an audit, the reversed Knight of Wands has to pay for broken promises. Where the reversal lifts a burden, as with the Five of Wands or the Devil, she turns the relief into a fair settlement.

Reversed, Justice brings bias, dishonesty, false accusations and avoided responsibility. Beside The Moon the decision rests on false information, and beside Death an ending is rushed through without accountability.

Justice is Air and Libra. Swords share her element and sharpen her into contracts and legal battles, Wands feed her with fast decisions, Cups sit beside her neutrally and lean toward marriage or separation, and Pentacles, the contrary suit, turn her to audits, debts and business agreements. Her number is eleven, so a numbered pair's quintessence adds eleven to the partner's number and reduces any sum above twenty-two.

Justice beside other cards in a spread

Beside Major Arcana cards

Judgment is the card readers most often confuse with her: Justice settles the account and Judgment offers the clean slate after it. The Wheel of Fortune brings a turning point that matches what was earned, The Emperor clear rules and a decision by the book. The Lovers make a fair choice official. The Star and The Sun bring relief after a fair resolution, while The Tower makes the reckoning sudden and The Moon clouds the facts.

Beside Wands

Fire takes her Air as fuel, and Wands pairs call for fast decisions and professional ethics. The Ace starts a venture with agreements in place, the Four makes a milestone official, the Six brings a reward through fair process, the Eight quick news of a decision. The Ten upright shows a load unfairly shared. With the Page, Knight or Queen reversed, impulsive choices, broken promises or a domineering streak meet their consequences.

Beside Cups

Cups pairs centre on fairness between people. The Two confirms an equal partnership, often through an engagement or a joint agreement; the Ten seals family happiness with a marriage, a home or a fair family arrangement; the Six returns past kindness. The Five upright is a loss that follows from earlier choices. Reversed beside Justice reversed, the Two can mean divorce or a separation settlement.

Beside Swords

Swords share Justice's Air, so these pairs run on facts, words and procedure. The Ace brings the truth into the open, the Page gathers facts first, the Queen and King deliver a fair call and keep to it. The Two pauses until the missing facts are in. The Five and Seven describe unfair means that meet a standard, and the Eight and Nine a querent too trapped or too frightened to face a reckoning that is fairer than feared.

Beside Pentacles

Earth is contrary to Air, and Pentacles turn Justice toward money: audits, settled debts, contracts and estates. The Ace and Page start something on fair terms, the Six balances give and take, the Eight and Nine show reward in proportion to work, the Ten settles a will or shared property. Reversed, the Four, Ten, Knight and King meet consequences for greed, delay, a family dispute over property or reckless handling of money.

Beside court cards

Court cards often appear as the people inside the process. The Pages gather facts or make a sincere first offer, the Knights carry a decision out quickly or meet their obligations steadily. The Queens decide fairly with warmth, compassion or plain speech. The King of Swords is the traditional Man of the Law, often a judge or arbitrator, and the other Kings show authority used by the book.

Beside a card of the same number

No minor card carries eleven. Eleven reduces to two, the number of The High Priestess and of the four Twos, and each Two beside Justice has Death as its quintessence. Every Two is a pair to weigh: the Two of Wands a choice of direction made on honest numbers, the Two of Cups an equal partnership confirmed, the Two of Swords a pause before a balanced choice, the Two of Pentacles two demands split evenly.

Beside reversed cards

With Justice upright, a reversed burden card usually ends in a fair settlement. The reversed Five of Wands and Five of Swords wind down with mistakes admitted, the reversed Devil loosens an old dependency, the reversed Ten of Wands divides the load fairly. The reversed Five and Seven of Cups read the same way. Reversed partners that dodge or delay fare worse: the reversed Hermit and Hanged Man stall a reckoning that is already due.

Justice with every card

Each row gives the outlook in all four states, read from Justice's side: Justice first, then its partner.
