Wheel of Fortune combinations

The Wheel says when things move, and its partner says what moves. Here is how card X reads beside each of the other cards in the deck, upright and reversed.

Card meaning: Wheel of Fortune

Second card: Upright / Reversed

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Think of the Wheel as the timing card in any pair. It brings a turning point, luck, a cycle closing or opening, and the partner fills in what the turn is about. With the Four of Wands it arrives as a wedding, a homecoming or a new home; with the Ace of Pentacles as a windfall or a bonus; with the Two of Cups as a chance meeting. With Justice it becomes karma with a verdict attached, and the outcome tends to match what was earned.

A turn also needs someone ready to meet it, and many pairs are about that readiness. The Magician catches the opening with skill, the Queen of Cups absorbs the change with calm, and Death clears the old chapter so the next one has room. Partners that hold back spoil the timing: with the Hanged Man reversed the querent waits too long, and with the Moon reversed a lucky offer may hide deception.

Reversed, the Wheel brings delays, setbacks, instability and the feeling of having no control. Beside hard partners it adds bad luck to hardship, as with the Tower, the Three of Swords or the Five of Pentacles. Beside steady ones, such as Temperance or the King of Cups, calm and good habits keep the losses small until the cycle turns again.

The Wheel holds all four elements, so it neither strengthens nor weakens any partner's element, and each card keeps its own voice. Its number is ten, so the quintessence of a numbered pair is the partner's number plus ten, reduced by its digits whenever the total goes past twenty-two.

Wheel of Fortune beside other cards in a spread

Beside Major Arcana cards

The Magician meets the turn with skill, Strength with courage, the Chariot with drive. Justice makes it a matter of cause and effect, and Death closes a chapter before fortune opens the next. The Star and The Sun turn luck toward hope and success, and The World closes a long cycle and moves straight into the next. The Tower and The Devil bring luck with a price: a shock that clears ground, a gain with strings attached.

Beside Wands

Wands pairs make the turn fast and active. The Ace lands a new idea at the right moment, the Three sees plans already in motion pay off, the Four marks a milestone, the Six brings public recognition, the Eight good news that moves quickly. The Five, Seven and Ten show the cost of rising: competition, a position to defend, a heavier load. With the Wheel reversed, the Seven and Nine hold a hard line through bad luck.

Beside Cups

Cups pairs let fortune turn through feeling and relationships. The Ace brings a new emotional beginning, the Two a chance meeting, the Six someone returning from the past, the Nine a wish come true, the Ten a home or a reunion. The Four and Seven show luck offered to someone too withdrawn or too dazzled to pick it up. Upright beside the reversed Five of Cups, healing and luck arrive together.

Beside Swords

Swords pairs put a turning point in front of a mind. The Ace makes the right decision obvious, the Two's stalemate is broken by events, the Six opens a move to calmer times, and the Queen and King lock in a gain with clear thinking. The Three is a sudden turn toward heartbreak. Under the Eight and Nine, fear or worry stands between the querent and the opening; reversed, both release and the querent steps through.

Beside Pentacles

Pentacles give the turn a material form. The Ace is a windfall or a venture worth grounding fast, the Four keeps good fortune through careful management, the Seven sees a long season finally pay, the Ten an inheritance or a settled home. The Five sits at the bottom of the wheel: hardship upright, recovery once reversed, and bad luck on top of a lean stretch when the Wheel is the reversed card.

Beside court cards

Court cards bring no quintessence, so the reading is about who is there when fortune turns. Pages receive news, a fresh idea or a first opening. Knights act on it, the Knight of Wands at once and the Knight of Pentacles through slow work that gets a lucky push. Queens and Kings make the most of a turn with confidence, warmth or a clear head, and when the Wheel is reversed the King of Cups keeps things steady through the delays.

Beside a card of the same number

Ten is the Wheel's number and the last number of each suit, and the four Tens all make Judgment the quintessence of their pair. The Ten of Wands brings success along with a heavier load, the Ten of Cups completes a cycle of family happiness. A painful ending lands at a turning point with the Ten of Swords, and the Ten of Pentacles sees fortune turn in the family's favour.

Beside reversed cards

With the Wheel upright, a reversed burden card usually means the turn arrives as relief. The reversed Devil and Eight of Swords free the querent just as fortune turns, the reversed Ten of Wands lifts a long load, and the reversed Five of Pentacles marks income coming back. The reversed Hierophant opens a path outside convention. Two reversals go against the turn: the Hanged Man stays stuck in a wait, and the Moon hides deception behind a lucky offer.
