Four of Wands combinations
The Four of Wands marks a foundation finished and worth celebrating, and its partner names the occasion or the crack beneath it. Read it beside all 78 cards, upright and reversed.
Card meaning: Four of WandsCombinations are common patterns, not rules
The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.
Four garlanded staves stand open like a gateway, and the partner card usually says what the gateway leads to. Upright partners supply the occasion: the Hierophant a wedding with vows and witnesses, the Two of Cups an equal bond ready for a shared home, the Six of Wands a public win brought home, the Three of Cups the friends who come to the party. The Knight of Wands makes it a fast courtship or a trip that ends at the door.
The Four is also where recovery comes to rest, so reversed cards of loss, from the Five of Cups to the Ten of Swords, read beside it as healing with family around. In a health question The Moon next to it asks for rest at home as a complement to professional care. The same Moon reversed brings out the card's facade reading: joy performed for others while something private goes unsaid.
Reversed, the Four is a house that no longer holds: instability, discord, fragile alliances and a feeling of being unwelcome. Death or the Eight of Wands then lands change on a base that cannot absorb it, and the upright King of Cups is one partner that helps restore order. The card is Fire, Venus in Aries, and it shares that element with every Wands card.
Four of Wands beside other cards in a spread
Beside Major Arcana cards
Many trumps give the Four's celebration its occasion. The Hierophant supplies the vows and the tradition, The Lovers a choice of each other, the Wheel of Fortune a lucky turn that ends in a new home, and Judgment a decision that opens a stable stage. Death makes the party a farewell to an old life. With The Tower the upheaval comes first and a sturdier home after it, and The Devil upright lets a possessive streak run under a settled household.
Beside Wands
Same element, so the Wands make the celebration louder or test it from inside. The Six brings a public victory home, the Knight rides fast toward a commitment or a homecoming, and the Three reaches a stable stage before pushing further out. The Five starts a lively quarrel in a steady house, and the Ten keeps the party waiting until a heavy load comes down. Reversed, the Four meets the Eight's fast news or the Nine's vigilance with no stable ground under them.
Beside Cups
Fire and Water are contrary, so these pairs weigh lasting structure against passing feeling. The Two of Cups gives the Four a bond to set up house for, the Three of Cups brings friends to the milestone, the Six of Cups a homecoming or reunion, and the Ten of Cups a family occasion with warmth inside it. The Eight of Cups leaves a finished stage on a high. Upright, the Four of Cups keeps declining the invitation and the Five keeps grief in front of the party.
Beside Swords
Air feeds the Four's Fire, and the Swords show what the celebration is honest about. The Ace brings a clear decision or a signed agreement, the Four of Swords a rest at home once the stage is done, the Six a move to a stable new base, and the Queen and King clear terms under a commitment. Upright, the Five marks a win someone else was pushed aside for, the Seven hides something inside the alliance, and the Nine keeps the querent awake through a good stretch.
Beside Pentacles
Earth and Fire are neutral to each other, and the coins put money and work under the milestone. The Ace opens a new material start straight after a completed stage, the Three of Pentacles shares recognition with the team that built a project, the Four of Pentacles pairs savings with a settled home, and the Ten backs a family occasion with lasting security. The Seven marks a phase partway through a long job. Upright, the Five shows hardship with family or community help closer than it feels.
Beside court cards
No court card carries a number, so these pairs have no quintessence, and who stands under the garland matters more. The Pages bring good news into a settled home, the Knight of Wands rides toward a commitment, and the Knight of Pentacles harvests a long, slow plan. Queens and Kings often appear as the host or the person in charge. The reversed King of Wands runs a secure house too hard, while the upright King of Cups helps calm an unsettled one.
Beside a card of the same number
Four and four make eight, so Strength is the quintessence beside each of the other Fours, and patient courage sits under all three pairs. They also share Chesed, Mercy, on the Tree of Life. The Four of Cups looks at the same stability and finds it flat. The Four of Swords asks for rest once the celebration ends, and the Four of Pentacles guards behind closed arms the security the Wands share openly.
Beside reversed cards
With the Four upright, many reversed partners come home to recover. The reversed Five of Cups, Ten of Swords and Five of Pentacles show healing that finds family around it, the reversed Five of Wands and Five of Swords end a quarrel in a reunion, and the reversed Devil makes freedom from an old attachment worth celebrating. Some reversals stay outside the garland: the reversed Hanged Man keeps the querent stuck while others celebrate, and the reversed Star feels flat in the middle of it.
