The Four of Wands and the Three of Cups

Three women raise their cups in one toast, and four garlanded staves frame a homecoming. The pair celebrates twice, and asks whether the joy rests on something lasting.

How the two cards meet

These are the two great celebration cards of the deck, and they celebrate different things. On the Three of Cups three women stand in a ring on harvest ground heaped with grapes, a pumpkin and apples, lifting golden cups into one toast under a turquoise sky. On the Four of Wands four staves stand planted with a garland across their tops, two figures wave bouquets, and revelers gather on a bridge toward a castle beyond the moat. The Three is Water: social, emotional joy among friends that tends not to last. The Four is Fire grounded in structure, and it marks a foundation being laid, such as a wedding, a home or a business made official.

Together the cards favour a party with a real occasion behind it. Fire and Water are contrary and weaken each other, so the warmth of friendship and the solidity of the milestone may not last equally. The Chariot, the sum of four and three, adds willpower and direction once the toasts are over.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Yes

A milestone and the friends to share it: a wedding, a housewarming or a team success in good company.

Joy has both an occasion and a crowd. The Three of Cups gathers friends, community and gratitude, and the Four of Wands supplies the event worth gathering for: a completed project, a homecoming, a union. Engagement parties, weddings, reunions and family rituals all sit naturally here. A couple whose romance grew out of friendship may be ready to make it official, and single querents can meet people through a social event or a friend's celebration. At work a successful completion is marked with colleagues, teamwork is strong, and recognition is shared among everyone involved. Joint ventures spread their rewards across all participants, and the Four allows for generous gifts and the expenses a celebration brings. The Chariot underneath favours using the goodwill to move the next goal forward.

Advice

Plan the celebration around the people who helped, and say a word of thanks to each of them.

Four of Wands upright, Three of Cups reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

The milestone is real, but gossip, rivalry or overindulgence strain the circle gathered around it.

Something solid has been achieved, and the people around it are out of tune. The upright Four marks stability and a deserved celebration, while the reversed Three brings conflicts within the group, overindulgence and festivities that feel insincere. A wedding or family occasion can be planned well and still run into friction among friends or relatives, or leave the querent feeling isolated in the middle of the crowd. Inside a couple, the relationship itself may be stable while time with friends causes friction, or so much focus on the pair has cut both off from their wider circle. A project is completed and the credit is disputed, or the querent feels underappreciated at the event meant to honour the work. Money stays steady, though overspending on the party is a real risk.

Advice

Keep the guest list small and the budget fixed, and settle one tension privately before the day.

Four of Wands reversed, Three of Cups upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Friends rally round while home or plans are unsettled, and their support is the steadiest thing in view.

The foundation is shaky and the friendships are not. The reversed Four describes instability at home, disrupted plans and postponed events. The upright Three of Cups shows a circle that offers mutual support, hospitality and the ability to listen. When a wedding is delayed or a family plan falls through, friends become the place where the querent feels at home. Couples unsettled about shared goals benefit from the Three's emphasis on friendship within romance: talk the way good friends talk. At work a project has disappointed, yet team spirit is intact, and group discussion can rebuild the plan. A collaborative venture may help recover from delayed profits or heavy expenses. A small gathering can lift morale, while the Four's reversed counsel to reassess goals still needs attention.

Advice

Ask two friends to help you rework the plan over one evening, and accept the help they offer.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

The party falls flat and home feels unstable: conflict among friends and family, and plans that fall through.

Joy is in short supply. The reversed Three points to broken friendships, gossip, canceled trips and bitterness from unfulfilled expectations, and the reversed Four to instability, domestic problems and neglected duties. Family or friendship ties are tested by misunderstandings, and the querent may be tempted to withdraw instead of facing them. A relationship can suffer from jealousy, routine or the intrusion of a third person, and from the sense that the querent carries more than their share. Team morale drops, clashing ambitions delay completion, and hard work goes unrewarded. Money leaks through overspending and through joint projects that never turn a profit. Actively restoring trust rather than isolating, as the reversed Three advises, and improving communication, as the reversed Four does, are the way back.

Advice

Have one direct, calm conversation with the person you are most at odds with before anything else.

When this reading may not apply

Because both cards celebrate, the main question is what kind of event the reading means. If the question is about a wedding or another family milestone, the Four leads and the Three describes the guests. If it is about a friendship or a reunion, the Three leads and the Four shows where it happens, often a family home. In a love question, do not read the Three's three figures as a third party unless the Three is reversed or surrounded by cards of secrecy. As advice, the upright pair says organise the gathering and include the people who helped.
