The Hermit and Death

An armoured skeleton rides past a fallen king while an old man watches from his snowy height. The pair is about ending something and taking the time to understand it.

How the two cards meet

Death brings the event and the Hermit brings the reflection. Smith's rider is a skeleton in black armour on a white horse, carrying a black banner with a white five-petalled rose, while a king lies under the hooves and a child offers flowers. The Hermit stands far above such scenes, grey-cloaked, turned toward the past, his lantern lit. Side by side they describe the close of a stage, a relationship, a job or a habit, followed by a quiet time to absorb what it meant. Death leads, and the Hermit decides how the querent lives through the change: consciously, slowly, and mostly alone.

Water and Earth are friendly elements, so the ending and the inward turn support each other. Nine and thirteen make twenty-two, which brings the Fool in as the quintessence: under all the reflection, a new start is already waiting.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Maybe

Something ends, and a quiet stretch alone lets the querent understand it before starting again.

Death closes one period of life, and the Hermit gives the querent the solitude to look back over the road, gather what it taught and decide what comes next without haste. Grief has room here, and so does relief. A relationship phase may end, either moving to a new level after both people take stock or closing so that something healthier can come later; the Hermit's wisdom from past relationships keeps old mistakes from repeating. After a breakup, time alone counts as recovery. A long-held role or project at work comes to its completion, and the querent can use a period of study or retraining to choose the next direction. Old financial obligations close too, and careful planning turns that release into a steadier footing.

Advice

Mark the ending with something concrete, a letter you keep or a last visit, then give yourself a set number of quiet weeks before deciding the next step.

The Hermit upright, Death reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Leans no

The querent thinks endlessly about what has ended but still will not let it go.

With the Hermit upright, the querent reflects and analyses, and probably understands that a situation has run its course; reversed Death holds on anyway, out of fear of the unknown or attachment to the past. The risk is reflection that circles without releasing anything. Someone may know a relationship has no growth or joy left and still stay, or keep replaying an old grievance they cannot forgive. The Hermit's self-analysis is useful here when it asks a sharper question: why is this so hard to accept? Career progress slows because outdated methods or unfinished business are kept alive. Money stays in conservative habits, and fear of losses delays a needed change. Reversed Death's advice is to let go gradually, one view or habit at a time, and the Hermit can plan those steps.

Advice

List three things you are keeping only out of habit, and give one of them up before the month is out.

The Hermit reversed, Death upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Leans no

An ending has happened and the querent retreats into loneliness instead of moving through it.

The change is real, and the response to it has turned inward too far. Death upright closes a door, and the reversed Hermit withdraws, avoids people and rejects help, so the time after the ending brings isolation more than renewal. Solitude brings none of the peace it was meant to bring. After a separation, the querent may cut themselves off, fear new relationships or retreat into idealized memories of what was lost. Death's message is that the way is clearing for something healthier, and that message needs the querent to step back into the world. At work, the end of a position or project can leave the querent drifting, with loss of interest and fear of the unknown slowing the transition. Money may be freed from an old obligation and then sit unused because of insecurity. The first invitation after the ending is worth taking, since the reversed Hermit's own advice is to accept the help others offer.

Advice

Tell two people you trust what has ended, and accept the next invitation either of them makes.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Nothing ends and nobody is let in: stagnation and isolation keep each other going.

Reversed Death refuses to let the old close, and the reversed Hermit pulls away from everyone who might help it close. Inertia sets in, a period when everything seems motionless. A bond that has run its course may continue out of fear of separation, with both people lonely inside it and unwilling to share emotions. Work brings internal conflict and fear of losing the current position, combined with withdrawal from colleagues. With money, attachment to outdated ideas and a refusal of change can sink the querent into debt. Any movement starts once the fear of separation or loss is admitted out loud.

Advice

Talk to one person outside the situation about the change you keep avoiding, and ask them to check in with you in a fortnight.

When this reading may not apply

Death in this pair does not mean physical death; it speaks of a stage of life closing. If the querent is grieving a real loss, the upright pair describes mourning that needs time, and support from friends or a counsellor helps the Hermit's solitude stay healthy. Read as the past, the two cards often show an ending the querent has already worked through, and the present cards show the new start. If the Hermit represents the querent, the pair describes a thoughtful person facing a major change. If the question is about leaving a job or relationship, the upright pair supports leaving after careful thought.
