Death and the Six of Pentacles
One card shows an armoured rider under a black banner; the other a merchant weighing coins for two kneeling beggars. Together they ask what is owed when a chapter closes.
How the two cards meet
Death clears accounts and the Six of Pentacles settles them. The Major card sets the theme, an ending or a restructuring, and the Six says how resources move during it: who gives, who receives, and whether the scales are fair. In Smith's Six, a well-dressed merchant drops coins into the hands of two kneeling figures and holds a pair of scales in his other hand, under a clear sky. Death's skeleton rides a white horse with a fallen king beneath its hooves.
A change in one part of life moves money in another quickly, since Death's Water and the Six's Earth are friendly. The Sun, card XIX, is the quintessence, a bright card under a pair about endings and obligations, and it favours settling accounts in the open.
Combinations are common patterns, not rules
The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.
Four ways the pair can fall
Both upright
Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Leans yesOld obligations close and a fair exchange takes their place: debts repaid, help given and received.
Death ends old financial obligations, and the merchant's scales make sure the closing is fair. A loan is repaid, a settlement arrives, a business restructures and shares out what is left with some justice. The Six's mutual aid also covers the human side of change: someone gives practical support during a move, a mentor helps with a new role, the querent passes on what they no longer need. Couples can come out of a transition with a more even balance of giving and receiving, sometimes after one partner has carried the other for a while. At work, the end of a project may bring a bonus or recognition before the next phase begins. Death's conscious farewell to the past comes easier when less is left owing on either side.
Advice
Settle one outstanding debt or favour this month, so the chapter that is closing closes clean.
Death upright, Six of Pentacles reversed
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Leans noChange is under way, but the money around it is lopsided, with strings attached or debts left behind.
Upright Death moves things on, and the reversed Six tilts the exchange. The ending may leave the querent with debts, a settlement that favours the other side, or help that turns out to have hidden motives. Sometimes the imbalance is exactly what Death is ending: a one-sided arrangement, a dependency on someone else's money, a friendship where the querent only ever gave. Either way the transition has a cost someone has to carry. A couple separating may argue over who contributed what. A business change can expose uneven profit-sharing or a partner who took more than a fair share. The reversed Six counsels learning to say no, and that fits Death's push to release what has served its purpose.
Advice
Before you sign anything that closes the old arrangement, have someone outside it check the numbers.
Death reversed, Six of Pentacles upright
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yetHelp is offered, but you spend it keeping alive something that has already ended.
Generosity is in good supply. Friends, family or an employer offer support, money changes hands on fair terms, and the people kneeling in the Six are given what they need. The trouble is reversed Death: the support goes into keeping an old situation running when it should carry the querent through the change that situation needs. A loan props up a business that will not recover, or patience on both sides keeps a relationship going out of habit. The gift is sound and reversed Death misdirects it. Someone dating may keep accepting kindness from an ex while refusing to close that chapter. At work, mentorship and a fair wage can make an outdated role comfortable enough that nobody questions it. Once the querent lets go, the same help becomes the bridge to what comes next.
Advice
Ask what the support you receive is paying for, and redirect it toward the change you have been putting off.
Both reversed
Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: NoFear of change keeps you in a one-sided arrangement, giving more than you get back.
Neither card moves. Reversed Death resists the end of something that is already over, and the reversed Six shows the deal underneath: an unequal exchange, debts that keep growing, a relationship where one side gives and the other takes. Staying feels safer than the unknown, so the imbalance settles in. For a couple this can look like financial dependence nobody raises, or a bond that brings more sadness than joy while the querent keeps investing in it. At work, the querent may carry a disproportionate workload without fair pay and still fear leaving. Money follows the same pattern, with expenses exceeding income and the decision that would change it postponed again. The first step is one refusal, said out loud.
Advice
Pick one thing you keep giving without return and stop giving it for a month, then see what changes.
When this reading may not apply
If the querent is the giver in the Six, the pair can describe a generous ending they offer someone else; if they are the one kneeling, it describes support they receive during a change. In a question about a loan, a divorce settlement or an inheritance, the Six's orientation matters more than Death's. In a past position, the pair often points to help received during an old upheaval, and the present cards show whether that debt is still open. When the Six is the significator, read Death as the change in that person's circumstances.
