Sun Opposite Mars
Sun opposite Mars places your sense of self and your drive at opposite ends of the chart. Assertion tends to arrive through other people: rivals, demanding partners, the person who pushes back. Astrologers read it as a polarity to balance, learning to own your force without handing it to others or turning every encounter into a contest.
Will facing drive across the chart: force met through others, and a long lesson in balancing assertion with cooperation.

Mars across the sky
The Sun and Mars stand opposite about every 26 months, when Earth passes between them. At that moment Mars is at its closest and brightest, rising at sunset and shining all night, and it is retrograde, so every Sun–Mars opposition in a birth chart has Mars retrograde too. This chart counts the opposition within 8°.
Opposite signs share a modality and join fire with air or earth with water. A Sun in Libra facing Mars in Aries puts Mars in its own sign across from you; a Sun in Aries facing Mars in Libra puts it in detriment. Either way, the Sun, leader of the day sect, faces the night sect's lesser malefic, and what you want to be and how you push for it stand at two ends of one axis.
Force that seems to come from outside
From within, this opposition often feels as if conflict comes from other people. You go about your business and keep meeting someone who challenges you, competes with you or demands something. It can take years to see that the force you meet is also your own, set on the far side of the chart where it is easier to notice in others.
With Mars retrograde, your drive can also feel delayed or second-guessed: you act, reconsider, then act harder. The tension between pushing and holding back is a constant companion.
Courage in the open
The opposition gives courage in open confrontation. You know where you stand when someone stands against you, and challenges tend to wake you up. That makes you effective in competition, negotiation and advocacy, any setting where you face an opponent directly.
Relationships with this aspect rarely lack energy. Partners and close collaborators bring out your drive, and you bring out theirs. When balanced, the polarity produces strong alliances between two people who each hold their ground and respect the other for doing the same.
The opponent as mirror
Unbalanced, the opposition turns life into a series of contests. You may attract combative partners, bosses or rivals, or provoke them without meaning to. Projection is the classic pattern: the anger you do not claim seems to live in other people, and you keep having to fight it there.
The other extreme is giving in. You may swing between yielding to avoid a fight and erupting when you have yielded too long. Tradition, reading the Sun as the father and as authority, also links this aspect with power struggles in which both sides feel they are only defending themselves.
Sun opposite Mars in love
In love, this opposition brings strong attraction and real friction. You may be drawn to assertive, energetic partners who carry the fire you hold back, and the relationship can feel alive and combative at once.
Compatibility grows when both people own their drive. A partner who can say what they want plainly, and who lets you do the same, keeps the polarity in balance. Agree early on how you will handle anger, and notice when an argument is about who leads. Love works best here as a partnership of equals, with neither person cast as the permanent aggressor.
Work with an opponent
At work, the opposition suits roles where you face someone across a table: law, negotiation, sales, sport, politics, consulting, mediation and competitive business. You often perform best against a strong rival or alongside a demanding partner. Clear contracts and defined roles help, because ambiguity tends to turn into power struggles.
Tight and wide oppositions
This chart allows 8° for the opposition. Within 2°, the polarity is sharp, and relationships, rivals and the question of who holds the power tend to be central themes. Toward 8°, the tension is milder and easier to balance.
Because Mars is retrograde at every Sun–Mars opposition, the tightest oppositions fall near the middle of Mars's retrograde period, when it is closest to Earth. Astrologers read that as drive turned partly inward, reconsidered and strengthened, before it goes back out into the world.
Owning your force
Growth with this opposition means taking back the drive you see in others. Notice which people keep provoking you, and ask what they are doing that you will not let yourself do. Practise direct, early assertion in small matters so that it does not build into large fights.
The pair's Tarot cards are The Sun and The Tower. Across an opposition the Tower's lightning seems to strike from outside, and the work is to recognise that some of that force is yours to use.
Questions to reflect on
- Which person keeps provoking me, and what do they do that I will not let myself do?
- When do I give in to avoid a fight, and what happens after?
- How do I tell a partner from an opponent?
- What would assertion look like if I used it early and in small doses?
