Detriment
A planet is in detriment when it occupies the sign opposite one it rules, such as Mars in Libra or the Sun in Aquarius. Astrologers read it as a planet in exile: still active, but forced to work through methods that run against its nature. The result is awkwardness and effort rather than absence, and often a skill learned the hard way.
A planet living in the sign across from its home, doing its job with borrowed tools.

What detriment means
Every domicile has an opposite sign, and a planet placed there is in detriment, also called exile. The image is a person living in a country whose customs contradict their own. They can still work, speak and earn, but every move needs translation. Lilly scored detriment at minus five, the mirror of domicile's plus five.
The opposition explains the trouble. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio; across from them lie Libra and Taurus, the homes of Venus. Mars wants to cut, compete and decide alone, while the Venus signs value balance, comfort and agreement. A Mars in Libra still has drive, but it has to pursue it through negotiation and the approval of others. Detriment describes that mismatch between the planet and its host, not a planet that has stopped working.
The detriment table
| Planet | Detriment |
|---|---|
| Sun | Aquarius |
| Moon | Capricorn |
| Mercury | Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Venus | Scorpio, Aries |
| Mars | Libra, Taurus |
| Jupiter | Gemini, Virgo |
| Saturn | Cancer, Leo |
Each entry is the sign opposite a domicile. The pairs trade places: Venus is in detriment in the signs of Mars and Mars in the signs of Venus, and Mercury and Jupiter do the same across the Gemini–Sagittarius and Virgo–Pisces axes. The lights and Saturn face each other, with the Sun and Moon in exile in Saturn's signs and Saturn in exile in theirs.
How to read a planet in detriment
Ask what the planet wants and what the host sign demands instead. The Moon in Capricorn needs comfort but lives in a sign of duty and restraint, so feelings tend to be managed before they are shown. Saturn in Leo wants order and caution in a sign of display, which can produce a person who wants recognition and distrusts wanting it.
Then look at the host planet, because a planet in exile depends on its dispositor. Venus in Aries answers to Mars, and a well-placed Mars gives this Venus a clearer route. Check the minor dignities too: Venus in Scorpio in a day chart rules the water triplicity there, which gives it some footing. Mutual reception can soften detriment further.
Many astrologers find that people work hardest on the planet in detriment and end up with an earned competence. The planet is not doomed. Its function does not come on autopilot.
Detriment and the modern rulers
Modern astrology extends the table with the outer planets, a modern addition based on their assigned signs. Uranus, given Aquarius, is placed in detriment in Leo. Neptune, given Pisces, is in detriment in Virgo. Pluto, given Scorpio, is in detriment in Taurus. Because these planets stay in a sign for years, these detriments mark whole age groups and say little about one person on their own.
Traditional astrologers do not apply detriment to the outer planets, and some modern astrologers avoid the word altogether, preferring to speak of a planet that works in an unfamiliar style.
Detriment in example charts
Mars in Libra: anger is weighed against fairness and the wish to be liked. The person may argue well for others and find it hard to claim things for themselves.
Venus in Aries: affection is quick, direct and impatient. Desire comes first and slower courtship can feel like a test of endurance.
Sun in Aquarius: the self finds its place through groups, causes and ideas more than through personal display, and may feel uneasy at the centre of attention.
Jupiter in Virgo: generosity shows up as practical help and careful advice. Faith in the big picture can get lost in checking each detail, and the growth comes from trusting a plan once it is sound.
Saturn in Cancer: duty is tied to family and belonging. The person may carry responsibility for the household early, guard their feelings closely, and later build the kind of secure home they once had to provide for others.
