Essential Dignities

Essential dignity measures how well a planet's nature fits the sign it occupies. A planet in its own sign or its exaltation acts in its own style; a planet in detriment or fall has to work against the grain; a peregrine planet has no claim on its place at all. These pages cover the main dignities and debilities, plus mutual reception and combustion, two conditions that change how freely a planet can act.

Dignity asks whether a planet is at home where it stands: whether it can act in its own manner, or has to borrow, adapt and struggle to get its work done.

What essential dignity measures

Every planet has a nature. Mars cuts and pushes, Venus joins and pleases, Saturn limits and preserves. Every sign has a nature too, and an owner, the planet that rules it. Essential dignity compares the two. When a planet stands in a sign whose character supports its own, it is dignified and can do its work plainly. When it stands in a sign whose character opposes its own, it is debilitated and has to work through methods it would not choose.

The word essential separates this from accidental dignity, which is about position rather than sign: being on an angle, moving fast, being visible rather than hidden by the Sun's glare. Essential dignity describes a planet's quality, accidental dignity its power to act. A planet can be strong by sign and weak by position, like a skilled worker with no job, or the reverse, like a clumsy worker in a powerful post.

Dignity is not a moral score. A dignified Saturn is still Saturn: it is better at being patient and structured, not softer. A debilitated Venus is not unloving. It loves through means that come less naturally to it, and people with debilitated planets often develop real skill in exactly those areas, because nothing came for free. Traditional astrology stressed dignity heavily; modern astrology uses it less, but most practitioners still know the table.

The five dignities and the two debilities

The traditional scheme, as William Lilly scored it in the seventeenth century, has five essential dignities in descending order of strength:

Dignity Lilly's score What it means
Domicile +5 the planet is in a sign it rules
Exaltation +4 the planet is in the sign where it is honoured
Triplicity +3 the planet rules the element of the sign, by day or by night
Term (bound) +2 the planet rules the few degrees it stands in
Face (decan) +1 the planet rules the ten-degree third of the sign

Against them stand two debilities. Detriment, scored at −5, is the sign opposite a domicile. Fall, scored at −4, is the sign opposite an exaltation. A planet with no dignity of any kind in its degree is peregrine, a wanderer, which Lilly also scored at −5.

The table below gives the sign-level dignities for the seven traditional planets. Exaltation and fall name a peak degree as well as a sign.

Planet Domicile Exaltation Detriment Fall
Sun Leo Aries 19° Aquarius Libra 19°
Moon Cancer Taurus 3° Capricorn Scorpio 3°
Mercury Gemini, Virgo Virgo 15° Sagittarius, Pisces Pisces 15°
Venus Taurus, Libra Pisces 27° Scorpio, Aries Virgo 27°
Mars Aries, Scorpio Capricorn 28° Libra, Taurus Cancer 28°
Jupiter Sagittarius, Pisces Cancer 15° Gemini, Virgo Capricorn 15°
Saturn Capricorn, Aquarius Libra 21° Cancer, Leo Aries 21°

Mercury is the odd one out: it rules Virgo and is exalted there too, and it is both in detriment and in fall in Pisces. Triplicities, terms and faces are given on every planet-in-sign page, and the decan pages treat the faces in full.

Reception and combustion

Two further conditions in this family are not essential dignities but change how a planet behaves.

Mutual reception happens when two planets each stand in a sign the other rules, by domicile or by exaltation. The Moon in Aries with Mars in Cancer is the textbook case: both planets are uncomfortable, each in the other's home, and each looks after the other's guest. The tradition read reception as cooperation, a way for two weak placements to support each other, and many authors gave it most weight when the two planets are also in aspect.

Combustion is about the Sun. A planet within 8.5° of the Sun is combust, its light swallowed by the Sun's glare; within 15° it is under the beams, dimmed but not burned. Within 17 arcminutes, roughly the radius of the Sun's disc, it is cazimi, in the heart of the Sun, and strengthened instead. Combustion applies whatever the sign, so a planet in its own domicile can still be combust and struggle to act openly.

Modern rulers and the outer planets

The classical scheme covers seven planets. After Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered, astrologers gave them signs: Uranus to Aquarius, Neptune to Pisces and Pluto to Scorpio. Many modern astrologers read these as co-rulers, and some have proposed exaltations for them, though there is no agreement on those.

Traditional astrologers do not assign dignity to the outer planets at all. For dispositors, house rulers and dignity scoring, the classical rulers stay in use in most practice, and the pages here follow that convention while noting the modern rulers where they apply. If you read Pluto in Scorpio as dignified, you are working in the modern scheme, and it is worth saying so when you compare notes.

How to use dignity in a reading

Check each planet's dignity once you know its sign. Start with the chart ruler and the two lights, since their condition affects the whole chart, then the other planets.

Read dignity together with house and aspects. A Mars in Libra in the tenth house, trine Jupiter, has a hard sign and a strong position with help; a Mars in Aries in the twelfth, square Saturn, has a home sign and a hidden, pressured position. Neither summary is complete without both parts.

Then look at the dispositor, the ruler of the sign a planet stands in. A peregrine or debilitated planet takes much of its character from its dispositor, so a weak Venus in Virgo leans on the condition of Mercury. Following these chains of rulers often leads to one planet that ties the chart together, usually a planet in its own sign.

Every planet-in-sign page in this library states the dignity in its first section, and the dignity pages explain each condition in detail, with examples.
