Aquarius: amethyst

Aquarius gets amethyst from the zodiac lists and February gets amethyst from the calendar, and the two arrived there separately. The sign's reasoning runs through Saturn and restraint; the month's runs through the Greek amethystos, meaning not drunken. They meet at the same stone.

The stone most often assigned

Amethyst leads most Aquarius lists and is also February's birthstone, which makes it one of the more over-determined assignments in the zodiac scheme.

Amethyst is quartz coloured violet by iron altered by natural radiation, hardness 7 with no cleavage, abundant and cheap since Brazilian deposits were opened. Its one weakness is light: ultraviolet destroys the colour centres, so a piece left in sunlight fades permanently.

The reasoning for the sign is restraint and sobriety, the qualities the stone's own name records, applied to a fixed air sign associated with principle and distance.

Where the assignment comes from

Aquarius, like Scorpio, has a rulership that changed. Traditional astrology gives it to Saturn; modern Western practice added Uranus after 1781, and lists written since reach for stones associated with sudden insight, originality and disruption.

That is why modern Aquarius lists include labradorite, moldavite and aquamarine alongside the older amethyst and garnet, and why they disagree so much.

Aquamarine appears frequently for the obvious wrong reason, which is the shared syllable rather than any correspondence. Aquarius is an air sign, not a water sign, and the name refers to the water-bearer rather than to water itself.

The Vedic alternative

In Jyotish, Aquarius is Kumbha, ruled by Shani, Saturn, whose gem is blue sapphire, neelam, and the same warnings apply as for Capricorn. Vedic astrology does not use Uranus, so the modern Western disruption reading has no counterpart there.

Neelam is held to act faster than any other of the nine gems and is traditionally tested by brief wearing before commitment. Where it is unsuitable, blue-violet substitutes including amethyst and iolite carry the same planetary assignment more gently, which means that for Aquarius the Vedic substitute and the Western list happen to agree on amethyst.

That coincidence is worth noticing, since it is one of very few points of contact between the two systems outside Leo and Cancer.

Other stones cited for this sign

Garnet appears in many Aquarius lists, borrowed from January.

Labradorite is the strongest modern addition on the Uranus reasoning, and it has the advantage of being genuinely striking, though at hardness 6 with two cleavage directions it is a pendant stone.

Moldavite appears in modern lists on the disruption reading and is worth approaching carefully, since genuine material is expensive and the market is full of green bottle glass.

Aquamarine, despite the naming confusion, is a durable and pleasant stone at hardness 7.5 if you want it.

Sugilite appears in many modern Aquarius lists and is worth placing correctly: it was described in 1944 and reached the metaphysical market in the 1970s after the Wessels mine in South Africa produced gem material, so it is a very recent assignment even by the standards of these lists.

  • What principle am I holding that I have not examined in years?
  • Where does detachment protect my thinking, and where does it just keep people out?
  • If two systems reach the same stone by different routes, is that agreement or coincidence?
