Essential dignity · rulership ⌂

Domicile

A planet is in domicile when it sits in a sign it rules, such as Mars in Aries or Saturn in Capricorn. Astrologers read it as the strongest essential dignity: the planet answers to no one else and can act in its own manner. Strength here means coherence, a planet that behaves like itself, and says nothing yet about whether that behaviour is wise.

A planet in a sign it rules, acting on its own authority and in its own style.

Gifts

  • Acts without needing permission
  • Clear, recognisable expression
  • Its own dispositor, so self-contained
  • Reliable resources in its area of life
  • Easy to read in the chart

Shadow

  • Can overdo its own nature
  • Little outside correction
  • Hard to bend when the situation needs another style
  • Strength without judgment if badly aspected
  • Says nothing about house or aspects by itself

What domicile means

The Greek and Latin words behind domicile both mean a house. Each sign is a home with an owner, and when the owner is in residence it controls the furniture, the doors and the budget. In Lilly's point system domicile is worth five, the highest of the five essential dignities, ahead of exaltation, triplicity, terms and face.

The classical scheme gives each of the seven visible planets its home. The two lights take one sign each, Cancer for the Moon and Leo for the Sun. The five planets fan out from there in order of their speed, each taking one sign on the solar side of the zodiac and one on the lunar side, until Saturn holds the two signs opposite the lights. That is why Mercury has Gemini and Virgo, the signs beside the lights, and Saturn has Capricorn and Aquarius, the signs facing them.

The traditional rulership table

Planet Domicile
Sun Leo
Moon Cancer
Mercury Gemini, Virgo
Venus Taurus, Libra
Mars Aries, Scorpio
Jupiter Sagittarius, Pisces
Saturn Capricorn, Aquarius

Every sign has exactly one traditional ruler, and the five planets each rule one masculine and one feminine sign. Older texts call one of each pair the planet's day house and the other its night house, but both count fully as domicile.

How to read a planet in its own sign

Start with what the planet signifies and assume it can deliver it plainly. Venus in Libra brings ease with people and a feel for proportion; Saturn in Capricorn brings patience and a talent for structure. The planet is also its own dispositor, so you do not have to follow a chain of rulers to see how it will act.

Domicile measures quality of character, not volume. A Mars in Scorpio placed in the twelfth house and squared by Saturn still has its own resources, but it uses them out of sight or under pressure. Read domicile with the house, the aspects and the sect of the chart before deciding how much the planet gets done.

A planet at home can also be too much of itself. Jupiter in Sagittarius may promise more than anyone can keep. The tradition expected a dignified planet to act well, and astrologers today add that a planet can be strong and still need a counterweight elsewhere in the chart.

The modern rulers

After Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered, astrologers assigned them signs: Uranus to Aquarius, Neptune to Pisces and Pluto to Scorpio. These are a modern addition, made in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and they sit beside the classical rulers rather than replacing them in most practice. Many astrologers call Uranus the co-ruler of Aquarius, Neptune of Pisces and Pluto of Scorpio, while Saturn, Jupiter and Mars remain the rulers used for dispositors, house rulers and dignity scoring.

Traditional astrologers do not use the outer planets for rulership at all. If you read Pluto in Scorpio as dignified, you are using the modern scheme, and it helps to say so when you compare notes with someone working from the classical table.

Domicile in example charts

Mars in Aries: the drive acts first and explains later. It works best where speed and courage are wanted and struggles with long waits.

Moon in Cancer: the emotional life is fluent and protective. Needs for safety and belonging are clear to the person and easy to state.

Mercury in Virgo: precise, careful thought, with a gift for sorting detail. The risk is criticism that goes on after it stops being useful.

Saturn in Aquarius: discipline is applied to ideas and groups, and rules are kept because they make sense. The same placement can hold to a system long after others have moved on.

In each case, look next at the house the planet occupies. Domicile tells you the planet will act in its own style; the house tells you where.

Questions to reflect on

  • Which planet in your chart is in its own sign, and where in your life do you act most like yourself?
  • When does that easy strength become stubbornness?
  • Which other planet in your chart could balance it?
  • Do you read your chart with the traditional rulers, the modern ones, or both?
