Opposition ☉ ☍ Asc · the Sun at sunset

Sun Opposite Ascendant

Sun opposite Ascendant is the Sun conjunct the Descendant, a birth around sunset. Identity tends to be learned through other people: partners, close friends and open rivals who show you who you are. The task is a balance between self and other, so that the relationship strengthens the self instead of replacing it.

Identity discovered in a mirror held by other people, and the work of keeping a self while sharing a life.

Tarot: The Sun

The Sun on the Descendant

An opposition is an angle of 180°, six signs apart, and this chart counts it within 8°. With the Sun opposite the Ascendant it stands at the Descendant, the western horizon, so you were born around sunset: shortly before it, with the Sun in the seventh house just above the horizon, or shortly after it, in the sixth. An opposition to the Ascendant is also a conjunction to the Descendant.

The angles move about a degree every four minutes, so this aspect needs an accurate birth time. A sunset birth is easy to check against the date and place, which makes this one of the simpler aspects to confirm.

The Sun is the light of the chart and here it is at the point where light goes out. The tradition calls the Descendant the setting place, where the self meets what lies outside it.

How the Sun colours the Ascendant

The Ascendant is how you appear and the Sun sits across from it, so identity lives opposite the first impression. You may present one way and feel another, with the centre of you invested in people instead of in your own front. Close relationships are where you learn what you are made of.

Others often seem more definite than you do, because you project your Sun onto them. You admire a confident partner or a strong friend and are drawn into their orbit, and the lesson is that the strength you see in them is yours too. As a result the aspect tends to produce people who read others well.

The Descendant as the Sun's home

The seventh house is the place of marriage, partnership and open opposition, and the Sun sits in it. Relationships are not a side matter: they carry your identity. You may marry early, or marry a strong character, or discover who you are in a long friendship.

The pattern to watch is a seesaw: you give way for a while, then take over, and the partner swings opposite. Compatibility is better with someone who values your self and has a self of their own, and with whom negotiation is open and ordinary. Seen as self-understanding, the question is what part of your own light you have handed to your partner to carry.

Work in partnership

Work tends to go well in pairs and teams: partnerships, law, counselling, negotiation, diplomacy, sales, anything in which you stand across from another person and find common ground. You are often good at hearing what a client or colleague needs.

The weakness is in working alone without anyone to mirror you, when direction can drift. You may also defer to the person in charge and then wonder why your own ideas never surface. These are tendencies, not prescriptions.

Balancing self and other

An opposition is solved by balance, so the practice is to hold both ends. Make choices alone from time to time, even small ones, to feel what you want when no one is reflecting it. In relationships, say your preference first, then listen to theirs.

When you admire strength in a partner, ask what in yourself it corresponds to and how you could use it. The card for this pairing, The Sun, suggests a self that can stand in the light without anyone else lighting it, and share that light without handing it over.

Questions to reflect on

  • What do I admire most in the people I am closest to, and where is that in me?
  • Do I decide alone as well as I decide with others?
  • When do I defer, and what do I resent afterwards?
  • Picture a month in which no partner reflects you back, and notice what you do.
