Tiger's eye

Tiger's eye is quartz that grew into the space left by a fibrous blue asbestos mineral as it broke down, preserving the fibre structure. That structure is why the stone shows a moving band of light, and why every culture that met it named it after the eye of something watchful.

What it actually is

Tiger's eye is silicon dioxide, hardness 7, with a fibrous internal structure inherited from another mineral.

The formation is unusual. Crocidolite, a fibrous blue amphibole and one of the asbestos minerals, was progressively replaced by silica while its fibre arrangement was preserved. Where iron oxidised during the process the result is golden brown tiger's eye; where it did not, the stone stays blue and is called hawk's eye. The intermediate stages produce mixed colours.

The parallel fibres reflect light in a band perpendicular to their length, an effect called chatoyancy, from the French for cat's eye. Cut as a cabochon with the fibres running the right way, the band moves as the stone turns.

Finished tiger's eye contains no asbestos fibres in a hazardous form, since the silica has replaced them, but raw and unprocessed material should not be cut or ground without proper dust control.

Where it comes from

South Africa's Northern Cape, particularly around Griquatown, is the classic and dominant source and has supplied the world market for over a century. Western Australia produces a distinctive material, and Namibia and India also supply it.

The Roman world knew a chatoyant stone and engraved it, and Pliny mentions stones showing a moving line of light. Roman soldiers are said to have carried engraved tiger's eye as protection in battle, a claim repeated widely and difficult to source precisely, though engraved chatoyant stones from the period do exist.

Its modern prominence dates from the South African deposits being worked commercially, which made the material abundant and cheap for the first time.

What the traditions claimed

Every tradition that encountered a chatoyant stone read it as an eye, and the reasoning is straightforward: it looks like one, and it appears to follow you as you move.

The eye reading carries two consistent meanings. The first is watchfulness, the sense of being guarded by something that sees, which is why the stone attaches to protective use in Roman, Indian and later European practice. The second is seeing clearly, particularly seeing what is actually happening rather than what you would prefer.

In Indian tradition, the chatoyant chrysoberyl called cat's eye is a navaratna gem assigned to Ketu, the descending lunar node, and it carries serious prescriptive weight. Tiger's eye is not that stone and should not be substituted for it, though it is sometimes offered as a cheap alternative.

Modern practice gives tiger's eye courage, confidence and the ability to act under pressure, which is a reasonable descendant of the watchful reading.

How it is worked with

One of the best practical stones in the catalogue: hardness 7, no cleavage, cheap, and it looks like something rather than being an unremarkable pebble, which helps if you want a stone you will actually keep in a pocket.

The modern use is as a confidence stone before something exposing, and its older use as a watchful protective object is broadly the same practice with a different explanation.

The seeing-clearly reading is the more interesting one to work with. It suits questions where the problem is not courage but honesty about what is actually going on.

Cabochons and tumbled pieces show the chatoyancy best; faceted tiger's eye loses the effect entirely, which is why you rarely see it.

Buying it honestly

Dyeing is very common. Red tiger's eye is usually heat-treated, which is stable and traditional. Blue material is where the trouble is: genuine hawk's eye exists and is far less common than the dyed blue tiger's eye sold under its name.

Bright unnatural colours, including green, purple and pink, are all dyed.

Under a loupe, dye pools in the fibre boundaries and looks uneven in a way natural colour does not.

Glass imitations with fibre optic cable are common and are sold as cat's eye stones. Fibre-optic glass shows a perfectly straight, unnaturally sharp band and a regular honeycomb pattern on the end of the piece.

Some tiger's eye is stabilised with resin, which is rarely disclosed and rarely matters.

Handle with care

Finished tiger's eye is safe: the asbestos precursor has been replaced by silica. Do not cut, grind or sand raw material without dust control.
