Aries: carnelian

Aries opens the tropical zodiac at the spring equinox, and almost every list assigns it something red. That agreement is not evidence of an ancient tradition so much as evidence that Mars, iron, blood and the start of things have been connected for as long as anyone has been writing about either.

The stone most often assigned

Carnelian is the most commonly cited Aries stone, and it is a defensible choice for reasons beyond colour. It is chalcedony coloured by iron oxide, hardness 7 with no cleavage, which means it survives being carried, and it was the working amulet of the Indus Valley, Egypt and the Islamic seal tradition.

The reasoning behind the assignment is Mars. Mars rules Aries in both Western and traditional astrology, Mars is the iron planet in the old planetary metal scheme, and carnelian owes its colour to iron. That is a chain of associations rather than a proof, but it is at least internally consistent, which is more than several zodiac assignments manage.

Bloodstone and red jasper appear nearly as often, and both are the same mineral family with the same iron colouring.

Where the assignment comes from

Zodiac stone lists in their current form are mostly nineteenth and twentieth-century compilations, and they descend loosely from the medieval mapping of the twelve stones of Aaron's breastplate onto the signs.

For Aries the underlying logic is planetary rather than scriptural. The scheme of planetary rulerships is genuinely ancient, running back through Hellenistic astrology to Babylonian precursors, and the association of each planet with a metal and a colour is medieval and alchemical. Mars takes iron and red.

What that means practically is that any red iron-coloured stone will satisfy the Aries assignment: carnelian, red jasper, garnet, bloodstone and hematite all qualify on the same logic, which is why the lists disagree while all being red.

The Vedic alternative

In Jyotish, Aries is Mesha, ruled by Mars, whose gem is red coral, moonga. It is prescribed for courage, physical vitality and the strength of the body, and like every navaratna gem it is prescribed from the chart rather than from the sign, with specific instructions about weight, metal and the day of first wearing.

Red coral raises two issues this library takes seriously. The first is conservation: precious coral colonies grow very slowly and are under real harvesting pressure. The second is authenticity: a large proportion of what is sold as red coral is dyed bamboo coral or reconstituted powder in resin.

If you want the Vedic prescription, work with an astrologer who will tell you the source, and consider whether you are comfortable with the material.

Other stones cited for this sign

Bloodstone is the strongest alternative, and it doubles as one of the two March birthstones, so it serves both the sign and the month for anyone born before the start of April.

Red jasper is the cheapest and toughest option and has the deepest Egyptian pedigree, appearing in the tyet amulet specified in the Book of the Dead.

Diamond appears in some Aries lists, borrowed from the April birthstone rather than from any planetary logic.

Garnet and hematite both suit the iron reasoning and are inexpensive. Of all of these, red jasper is the one that will survive a keyring longest.

  • Is the courage I want actually courage, or is it permission?
  • Where does my heat help, and where does it burn the thing I am trying to build?
