Fall
A planet is in its fall in the sign opposite its exaltation, such as the Sun in Libra or Mars in Cancer, with the deepest point at the degree that mirrors its exaltation degree. Astrologers read it as a planet that has lost its standing: it works without the honour it is used to, so it often feels overlooked, unsure, or forced into indirect methods.
A planet stripped of its rank, still capable, but working where it is not admired.

What fall means
The Greek word is tapeinoma, a lowering, and older English texts call it depression. Exaltation seats a planet at the head of the table; fall, in the opposite sign, sends it to the back of the room. Lilly scored fall at minus four, the mirror of exaltation's plus four and a point milder than detriment.
The difference from detriment is one of honour rather than method. A planet in detriment works under foreign rules. A planet in fall has lost its reputation: people may not take its contribution seriously, and the planet itself may stop trusting it. The Sun in Libra, for example, sits where Saturn is exalted, so the solar will has to share the stage with negotiation and other people's verdicts.
The fall table with degrees
| Planet | Sign | Degree of fall |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Libra | 19° |
| Moon | Scorpio | 3° |
| Mercury | Pisces | 15° |
| Venus | Virgo | 27° |
| Mars | Cancer | 28° |
| Jupiter | Capricorn | 15° |
| Saturn | Aries | 21° |
Each entry sits exactly 180° from the planet's exaltation, so the fall degree repeats the exaltation degree in the opposite sign. The planet is in fall throughout the sign, with the named degree as its lowest point. Mercury in Pisces is the doubly hard case: it is both in fall and in detriment there, the mirror of its double dignity in Virgo.
How to read a planet in fall
Ask where the planet expects respect and fails to find it. Mars in Cancer wants to act directly, but in the Moon's sign it acts through feeling and protection, and its anger tends to come out sideways. Jupiter in Capricorn wants to expand and give, and the sign of Saturn asks it to justify every gift first.
Then look for support. Fall rarely stands alone. Venus in Virgo is in fall, yet in a day chart it rules the earth triplicity, and from 7° to 17° Virgo it is in its own terms. Between 10° and 20° it holds its own face. A Venus at 12° Virgo in a day chart therefore has three minor dignities alongside its fall. Mutual reception, a good house and helpful aspects also count. Mars in Cancer with Jupiter in Capricorn is a curious case: both planets are in fall, yet each stands in the other's sign of exaltation, so they receive each other.
Many people with a planet in fall build the skill slowly and quietly, and become good at it precisely because it never came with praise attached.
Outer planets and fall
Fall depends on exaltation, and the outer planet exaltations are disputed, so their falls are too. If Uranus is exalted in Scorpio, as many modern writers say, its fall is Taurus. Neptune's fall moves with whichever exaltation an author prefers, and the same is true of Pluto: a Pluto exalted in Aries falls in Libra, while a Pluto exalted in Leo falls in Aquarius. Treat any outer-planet fall as one author's proposal rather than settled doctrine.
Traditional astrology gives the outer planets neither exaltation nor fall. Vedic astrology keeps the same fall signs as the Western table for the seven planets and calls the state debilitation.
Fall in example charts
Venus in Virgo: affection is shown through care, help and attention to detail more than through declarations. The person may doubt they are lovable as they are and try to earn love by being useful.
Sun in Libra: identity forms in relation to others. Decisions can wait on approval, and the growth lies in a self that stays steady while still giving other people their due.
Saturn in Aries: patience meets a sign of impulse. Discipline comes in bursts, authority may feel untested, and lasting structure is built once the person learns to pace themselves.
Moon at 3° Scorpio: the exact degree of the Moon's fall. Feelings run deep and private, and trust is given slowly.
Jupiter in Capricorn: optimism is tested against results. Generosity becomes measured and faith tends to grow from what has been proven, which can make this Jupiter reliable once it stops apologising for its caution.
