Square ♀ □ Asc · charm against self-image

Venus Square Ascendant

Venus square the Ascendant puts the planet of affection and worth at 90° to the rising degree. What you love and how you come across do not line up at first. You may feel pulled between pleasing people and being straight with them, and between your own taste and the one that gets approval. The square asks for a manner that is yours.

The urge to be liked set against the self that wants to be itself, and a taste you build by choice.

Tarot: The Empress

Venus at right angles to the rising degree

A square joins points 90° apart, three signs away, in signs that share a modality but clash in element. This chart counts it within 7°. Classical authors tied the square to Mars: it works by friction and demands action. Venus, the lesser benefic of attraction and agreement, meets the Ascendant at that right angle. With Venus 90° from the Ascendant, and never more than about 47° from the Sun, the Sun was well clear of the horizon: a daytime or a night-time birth rather than dawn or dusk. In whole-sign terms Venus usually sits in the fourth or tenth house.

A square to the Ascendant is also a square to the Descendant, so the friction reaches partnerships. The angles move about a degree every four minutes, and a 7° orb is about half an hour of birth time either side. The aspect needs an accurate birth time.

How Venus strains the manner

In the tenth-house version, affection and public role pull apart: you may feel that being liked at work costs something in who you are, or that the person people applaud is not the person you feel. In the fourth-house version the strain comes from family and home, where love was linked to behaving a certain way and you still sense that rule.

The result is often a charm that feels like effort. You may say yes with a smile and no inside. At the Descendant end, partners and clients can seem to want a different person from the one you show, or you may feel that you show only the pleasing version of yourself.

Venus square Ascendant in love

In love the square tends to make a gap between what you want and what you present as wanting. You may hold back a need to seem easygoing, or choose partners whose approval you have to work to earn. Affection can feel conditional, even when it is not.

Compatibility grows with partners who like you when you disagree with them. A good test is whether you can say a small no early on and keep the warmth. The aim is love that does not depend on a performance.

Work and the wish for approval

As tendencies, the square suits creative and client-facing work in which taste has to be developed against resistance: design, art, styling, performance, mediation and service. The friction often produces a recognisable style.

The risk is work done to be liked. Charge a fair price, say what you take on and what you decline, and take criticism of the work as feedback about the work. Tendencies, not prescriptions.

Building a manner that is yours

The task of a square is to act. Each week, notice one place where you went along to be liked, and one place where you said what you wanted. The ratio changes with practice. Spend time and money on things you enjoy for no audience.

The Empress belongs to herself, in her own garden. The square asks you to find which parts of your charm belong to you, and to keep those.

Questions to reflect on

  • Where did I learn that love depends on being agreeable?
  • What would I wear, say or choose if nobody judged it?
  • Which of my yeses is a no?
  • Who likes me when I disagree with them?
