Seven of Cups

The Tarot of New York City
Seven of Cups

Seven paper cups hang in the air above a man standing still: a condo tower, a stack of cash, a stranger's profile, a key, a small figure inside a heart, and two holding nothing but sparks. Everything is lit and roughly half of it is packaging. Today will hand you more options than you have attention for, and the work is closing some rather than finding more. Dream freely, then ask the Tuesday question of whatever is glowing: what does it cost, who else is in it, what does the morning after look like. Pick the cup that is actually on the shelf.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will take the shiniest cup off the shelf and start walking. Two of the seven on this card hold nothing but sparks. Slow down by one step, long enough to ask what is actually inside the one in your hand. Speed is not the trouble here. The choosing is.

Taurus

You want the option with weight in it, and this whole display is built out of light. The condo, the cash, the key: the solid-looking cups are the easiest ones to furnish in your head and never call about. Test one against real numbers. A fantasy with a budget attached stops being a fantasy or stops being possible.

Gemini

Seven glowing options is your natural habitat and your standing trap. You can hold all of them open, discuss all of them brilliantly, and carry none to the register. Close two of them out loud, to somebody. The relief will tell you that you were overloaded rather than spoiled for choice.

Cancer

The cup with the small figure inside the heart is where your eye goes, and it is also the easiest one on the shelf to hallucinate. Separate the person from your picture of being safe with them. Ask what they have actually said and done. Feeling is information, and it is not evidence.

Leo

Every cup here would make a good story about you, and the story is what you are shopping for. Ask which one you would want on a Tuesday morning with nobody watching. Put down the versions that exist to be told. The rest of the shelf clarifies immediately once those are gone.

Virgo

You will build a comparison grid for seven items, two of which are empty. Analysis is not the difficulty; the glow is, because it makes everything look answerable. Eliminate rather than evaluate. Cut the three you already know are display items, then study what survives. Precision applied to a fantasy still leaves you with a fantasy.

Libra

Too many doors open at once is the condition you find hardest to end, and this card is nothing but open doors. Nobody is coming to narrow it down for you. Choose one badly rather than seven beautifully, and let the cups you did not take belong to somebody else.

Scorpio

You will assume one of the seven is a trap and set about locating it, which keeps you standing in the glow indefinitely. The card is gentler than that: some cups are simply empty, and nobody is deceiving you. Pick the real one and let the sparkle go on being sparkle.

Sagittarius

All seven cups look like somewhere to go, and you would happily take the trip in each. This is the card where possibility turns into a way of never arriving. Name the one you would still want after the novelty wears off, and put a date on it. The rest is scenery, and it is good scenery.

Capricorn

You will dismiss the whole shelf as unserious and go back to the plan, which is its own way of not choosing. One of these cups is real and worth disrupting the schedule for. Let yourself want something before you have proved it achievable, then do the arithmetic on that one alone.

Aquarius

The interesting question for you is what seven floating cups reveal about desire in general, and while you answer it the deli closes. This card wants a personal choice rather than a theory of choosing. Pick the one you actually want, including the embarrassing one, and say so in plain words.

Pisces

This is your element, and the card reads like a warning written specifically for you. The glow, the reflection in the water, the version of a person who exists mostly in your imagination of them: you could live here for years. Choose one cup and make it real with a small practical act. The others keep perfectly well.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

The cup with the cash in it has your full attention, and two cups nearby hold pure sparkle. Establish which is which before you commit resources. Your eye for opportunity is real, and it works badly under good lighting.

Ox

You distrust the whole glowing shelf and will pick nothing, which this card counts as a choice made by default. One of the seven is genuinely available to you. Do the plain work of finding out which, then take it, rather than retreating to the task you already know how to do.

Tiger

You will take the boldest cup because it is the boldest, and the boldest one here is often only the brightest. Ask what is inside it. Courage spent on a display item leaves you out of pocket and still standing in the corridor.

Rabbit

The overload makes you withdraw and let others choose around you, and then you live in whatever is left over. Seven cups, all offered, none assigned. Say your preference out loud to somebody before the options close. Declining to pick is how the emptiest cup ends up in your hands.

Dragon

You want the largest cup on the shelf: the tower, the exit, the arrival. Behind everything, the Statue of Liberty holds up the oldest and biggest of these promises, and scale is the easiest quality to fake. Choose by substance and accept that it may look small from outside.

Snake

You will wait in the glow until you are certain, and this light does not improve with time. Two cups will still be empty whenever you decide. Make the call on what you know, keep it to yourself if you prefer, and stop treating patience as a method of verification.

Horse

Every cup is a direction and you would run toward all of them. This card is standing still and looking, which you tolerate for about a minute. Stay in front of the shelf long enough to choose, then move once. Motion in seven directions is the same as never leaving.

Goat

You will look for the cup somebody else approves of, and there is nobody in this picture except the figure and the lights. The dream of perfect love is on that shelf, and so are two cups of nothing. Choose the one that fits your own life. Comfort chosen by committee is not comfort.

Monkey

Seven options is a game to you and you will try to keep all of them in play. The figure on this card is small and standing still for a reason. Commit to one cup and give up the pleasure of the juggle. What you lose is optionality, which was never the thing you actually wanted.

Rooster

You will point out that two cups are empty and that the condo is out of reach, all of it correct. The card wants a selection rather than an audit. Say which one you want once the critique is finished. Being right about the display gets nothing to the register.

Dog

You will weigh each cup by who it serves and take whichever costs other people least. The figure here is choosing for his own life, and nobody is harmed by his choosing. Ask what you want before you ask what is fair. Duty makes a poor instrument for picking a dream.

Pig

You want several cups and see no reason to choose between them, which is both the warmth and the whole problem of this card. You can only carry so much to the register. Pick the one you would still want with the lights off, and have that one properly instead of all of them thinly.
