A rune from each of the four scripts

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Uruz is the aurochs, the wild ox, fierce and horned and a fell moor-stepper in the Old English poem, and it fights with its horns. On a single day the rune is not the week's surge but a burst of it: raw strength arriving on its own terms, in you or across the table from you. Do not try to harness it before lunch. Find the direction it is already going, put your weight behind that, and be out of its path if the direction is not yours. Wild strength is a resource for the hour it lasts and a hazard for anyone who thinks it can be reasoned with.

Úr is slag: the residue left when the useful part has been taken out. Today involves a remainder rather than a substance. The task nobody wanted, the part of the project with no glory in it, the tidying after a thing that has already been celebrated. It still needs doing. The rune's only comfort is that noticing the dross is what keeps the metal clean.

Ur is the English aurochs, the poem's fierce creature that fights with its horns and roams the moor. The letter kept the animal the Norse one lost. Today the rune is courage of the untamed kind: not bravery decided on, but the thing that moves before deciding. There is a moment today where the sharpest tool you have is the one to use, directly, without the preamble. Use it. The aurochs does not explain the horns. The warning is the same as ever: the strength is not for holding, only for aiming.

Fern is the alder: the wood that stands between you and the blow, used for shields because it takes the impact without splitting. Today something is absorbing damage on your behalf, possibly a person. Notice it. Protection that works is nearly invisible, and the usual way it ends is that nobody thanked whoever was doing it.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

This is your own temperament handed back at full size, which is not automatically good news. Uruz is strength that takes instruction from nobody, yourself included. Aim it once and then stop steering.

Taurus

The wild ox and the domesticated one are the same animal on different terms. This week you meet the untamed version, in yourself or in somebody near you. Do not try to yoke it.

Gemini

You handle force by talking around it and this force is not listening. Say less and stand somewhere it is not going to pass through. The talking works again next week.

Cancer

Something is coming through on its own terms and you will read it as aimed at you. It is not aimed at all. Protect what matters and let the rest of it go past.

Leo

Your strength is usually performed and this rune's is not. The aurochs has no audience and fights with what it has. Spend the week on the version of your power that works unwitnessed.

Virgo

You improve things by refining them and this cannot be refined. Uruz is raw and stays raw. Decide where to point it and accept that it will arrive rough.

Libra

Negotiation is your instrument and there is nothing here to negotiate with. That is unfamiliar rather than dangerous. Choose your position, hold it, and let the week be blunt.

Scorpio

You meet force with patience, which usually wins. This will not wear down. Use its direction rather than resisting it and you get further than any campaign would take you.

Sagittarius

Raw energy is your favourite weather, and the rune's warning is the part you skip. It cannot be bargained with, including out of enthusiasm. Point it, then let go of it.

Capricorn

You build with materials that behave. This week's material does not. Work with the grain of it rather than to your specification and the structure still stands.

Aquarius

You would prefer this to be a system and it is an animal. Uruz does not respond to a better argument. Deal with the force as force and keep the analysis for afterwards.

Pisces

Something here is stronger than you and you will try to absorb it. Do not. Stand aside, keep your own outline, and let the week's power belong to whatever it belongs to.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You survive by reading which way things are moving, and this week the reading is easy and the movement is fast. Take your position early. There is no adjusting once it starts.

Ox

The wild version of your own animal, and the difference is the entire lesson. Your strength waits and this one does not. Match its pace for one week rather than your own.

Tiger

Force meeting force is the week's obvious shape and the most expensive one. Let the aurochs run and take what it opens up. Nothing is conceded by stepping out of the way.

Rabbit

This is a week you would rather spend indoors, and mostly you should. Choose one moment to be out in it deliberately. Uruz gives something to whoever stands in it once.

Dragon

You are used to being the largest thing in the situation and this week you are not. That is worth more to you than another week of being right. Watch how it moves.

Snake

Raw force is not your medium and reading it is. Spend the week working out what it actually wants rather than how to deflect it. The answer will be useful for months.

Horse

The surge is real and it is not yours. Run alongside rather than in front. What arrives on its own terms carries you further than anything you could have started.

Goat

You will look for shelter, and shelter is the right instinct. Take it without deciding it makes you weak. Even the poem's aurochs is described by people who kept their distance.

Monkey

Cleverness does not work on this. There is no angle, no lever and no third option, which is the genuinely difficult part for you. Endure the week rather than solving it.

Rooster

You will want to correct the manner in which this is happening. It has no manner. Save the standards for what comes afterwards, which is where they will actually improve something.

Dog

You will put yourself between the force and whoever you protect. Check first that they need it. Some of this week's weather is theirs to stand in and will do them good.

Pig

Comfort is not on offer and pretending otherwise costs you the preparation time. Eat well, sleep properly, and let the rough part be rough. It passes on its own schedule.
