One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Preponderance of the Small

Hexagram 62 is a bird with a small body and a wide wingspan, two strong lines in the centre and four weak ones around them. The Judgment is among the most directive in the book. Small things may be done, great things may not, and the bird's call comes downward rather than up. The Image then names three excesses and permits all of them: go further in respect, further in grief, further in thrift. Keep the scale small, be more careful with detail than you would normally bother to be, and aim high without minding where you land.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will pick the large move because the small one feels beneath you. Great things may not be done under hexagram 62. Aim for the prince and be satisfied meeting the official, which the text calls fine.

Taurus

Thrift is already yours, so one of the three permitted excesses costs you nothing. Respect and grief are the other two, and both go further than you usually take them. Overdo those instead.

Gemini

You will describe the small thing until it sounds large. The bird's call comes downward. Whatever you are considering, this figure wants it smaller and lower, including how you talk about it.

Cancer

Going further in grief is explicitly permitted here, which the book rarely allows. Take the permission. Keep the actions small and the feeling as large as it wants to be.

Leo

You will want the version people can see. The three excesses the Image permits are respect, grief and thrift, and none of them shows. Aim high, land modestly, and let that be enough.

Virgo

Detail is your element and this figure finally rewards the excess of it. Be more careful than is reasonable. The one correction is the direction: further down and further in, not further out.

Libra

You will split the difference between the small move and the large one. The Judgment offers no middle. Small things may be done, great things may not, and the call comes down rather than up.

Scorpio

You will aim at the prince and refuse the consolation of the official. Meeting the official is stated as fine. Take the smaller meeting and put the intensity into thrift and respect, where the excess is sanctioned.

Sagittarius

The wingspan in this figure is yours and the small body is not. It is well to stay down, the Judgment says, and not well to go up. Go further in thrift, which will cost you something real.

Capricorn

You will treat the small move as beneath the plan and skip it. Great things may not be done here, so the small move is the plan. Go further in thrift than the budget requires.

Aquarius

You will exceed in principle. Three excesses are named and permitted, and principle is not among them. Respect, grief and thrift all go downward and inward, which is the only safe direction under this figure.

Pisces

Going too far in feeling is sanctioned here and you will take that gladly. The thrift is the one you will skip. Both are on the same list, and the list is the Image's whole instruction.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will hear thrift and stop reading. Respect and grief are on the same list, and the bird's call comes down rather than up. The saving is the easy third of it.

Ox

You will look for the large steady task. There is not one here. The bird has a small body and a wide span, and the work is smaller than your stride and needs more care than your patience.

Tiger

You will fly. The line for the bird that flies is misfortune, and the fourth line stacks four separate instructions not to move. Stay on the mountain.

Rabbit

Staying down is native to you and the Judgment agrees. The addition is the excess: further in respect than is comfortable, further in grief than you would show anyone. Small and careful is not the same as small and hidden.

Dragon

Small and low reads as diminishment. The figure is a wide span around a small body, which is proportion rather than reduction. The bird's call goes downward, and so does yours.

Snake

Precision comes easily and the excess of feeling does not. Go further in grief, the Image says, which for you is the difficult one of the three. The detail work you will manage without being asked.

Horse

You will cover distance. Great things may not be done under this figure, and the distance is the great thing you would be attempting. Stay down, go further in respect, and let the road wait.

Goat

You will be more careful than anyone and still ask whether it was enough. The Image answers by permitting the excess outright: further in respect, further in grief, further in thrift. You are not overdoing it.

Monkey

You will make the small thing elaborate. Small is the instruction, not clever. The bird's call comes down, and the fourth line says four times over not to move.

Rooster

You will exceed in correction. The three permitted excesses go downward and inward, and correction goes outward at somebody. Spend it on thrift instead, where the figure will back you.

Dog

Respect is one of the three and you already have it. Thrift is where you will fall short, because what you spend, you spend on other people. Go further there than feels generous.

Pig

Thrift is the instruction you will negotiate with. Respect and grief you overdo without effort, so the thrift is the whole assignment. Spend less than is comfortable and call that the excess.
