I Ching: Sunday, October 4

One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Gathering Together

Hexagram 45 is a lake collected on the earth's surface: assembly, crowds, congregations, and the conditions under which a gathering holds. The Judgment turns on one thing: the king approaches his temple. A gathering needs a centre outside the individuals in it, or it is only a crowd. The Image is the book's least sentimental note on crowds: the noble person overhauls their weapons against the unforeseen. Today, if you are gathering people, give them a temple: the shared thing it is for, named at the start. And check the exits. The gathering that holds is the one with a centre and a plan for when it does not.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You gather people and lead them nowhere in particular. Today name the temple first. A crowd with you at the front is still a crowd; the centre has to be outside you.

Taurus

You gather slowly and the gathering holds. Today the Image adds the weapons: prepare for the unforeseen. A stable crowd is the one that planned for the trouble.

Gemini

You gather a crowd by being interesting. Today give it a centre. The temple is the thing the gathering is for, and interest is not a temple.

Cancer

You gather people around you. Today gather them around something. The king approaches the temple; he is not the temple, and neither are you.

Leo

This is your crowd and the Judgment says it needs a centre that is not you. Today name the shared thing at the start, and the gathering holds without your presence.

Virgo

You will organise the gathering and forget why it is gathering. Today the temple first, then the overhaul. The centre gives the checklist a reason.

Libra

You gather people and keep them balanced. Today give them a purpose instead. Balance without a temple is a pleasant crowd that dissolves by evening.

Scorpio

You gather few and hold them tightly. Today the hexagram is a lake on the surface, wide and visible. Gather more, name the centre, and check the exits.

Sagittarius

You gather a crowd and leave it. Today stay and be the one who names the temple. The gathering that holds is the one someone gave a centre to.

Capricorn

You gather for a purpose and forget the offering. Today great offerings bring good fortune. Give the gathering something, not only a reason.

Aquarius

You gather around a cause and the cause is not a temple. Today make it one: a shared thing, named, with an offering. The Image also asks for the weapons.

Pisces

You gather people by feeling and the feeling disperses. Today name the centre out loud. The lake on the surface holds because the ground shapes it.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You gather people for what they can do. Today gather them around what the gathering is for. The temple is the centre, and the use is not it.

Ox

You gather slowly and hold the gathering by weight. Today add the temple. The crowd that holds has a centre outside its heaviest member.

Tiger

You gather by force and the crowd disperses when you look away. Today name the temple and let it hold them. Then overhaul the weapons; you are the unforeseen.

Rabbit

You avoid crowds and today the hexagram is one. Gather anyway, give it a centre, and check the exits first. The Image wants the weapons ready, and so do you.

Dragon

You are the centre of every gathering you join. Today the king approaches the temple, and the temple is not the king. Name a centre that is not you.

Snake

You gather in private and small. Today the lake is on the surface. Gather where it can be seen, name the shared thing, and prepare for the trouble that numbers bring.

Horse

You will gather a crowd and gallop off. Today stay and be the one who names the temple. The gathering holds by its centre, and it needs someone to point at it.

Goat

You gather to belong and the gathering has no centre. Today name one. Belonging to a temple holds; belonging to a crowd dissolves.

Monkey

You gather people to entertain them. Today give them a temple. The gathering that holds has a purpose, and the entertainment is the offering, not the centre.

Rooster

You will overhaul the weapons and forget the temple. Today both. The centre first, then the preparation; the Image is second in the hexagram for a reason.

Dog

You gather people to protect them. Today the protection is the weapons overhauled and the centre named. A guarded crowd with no temple is still only a crowd.

Pig

You gather people for the feast. Today the feast is the offering, and the hexagram says it brings good fortune. Add the temple: name what the table is for.
