Clear quartz
The stone every tradition kept and nobody agrees about. Piezoelectric, abundant, and used as a scrying surface long before it was called a master healer.
Amethyst
Purple quartz, named from the Greek for not drunken. Bishops' rings, Russian mines and February's birthstone, and the most misunderstood colour in the shop.
Rose quartz
Pink from microscopic mineral fibres, which is why it is almost never transparent. Beads from Mesopotamia around 7000 BCE, and now the stone of self-kindness.
Citrine
Genuinely rare, and almost everything sold under the name is heated amethyst. Learning to tell them apart is the fastest lesson in buying honestly.
Smoky quartz
Brown quartz coloured by natural radiation in the ground. The national stone of Scotland, worn in the hilt of the dirk and the shoulder brooch.
Rutilated quartz
Clear quartz shot through with golden needles of titanium oxide, once called Venus hair. The inclusion is the point, not the flaw.
Green aventurine
A rock rather than a single crystal, glittering from mica flakes. The gambler's stone in modern lore, which is a claim worth handling carefully.
Tiger's eye
Quartz that replaced a fibrous blue mineral and kept its silky bands. Roman soldiers carried it engraved; the chatoyant flash gave it the eye of every culture's watchful animal.
Carnelian
The workhorse amulet of the ancient world, from Egyptian tyet knots to the aqiq seal ring of Islamic tradition. Warm, opaque and endlessly carved.
Agate
Banded chalcedony named for a Sicilian river by Theophrastus. Almost all bright agate slices sold today are dyed, and the dye is not a scandal if it is declared.
Black onyx
Properly a banded stone, sold today as a solid black one, and usually dyed grey chalcedony. Cameo carvers built their whole craft on its layers.
Blue lace agate
Found in Namibia in the twentieth century, so it has no ancient lore at all. A useful test case for how quickly a modern meaning gets written.
Bloodstone
Green chalcedony flecked red, called heliotrope by the Greeks and tied by medieval Christians to the blood at the Crucifixion. March's older birthstone.
Red jasper
Opaque, dependable and everywhere. Egyptian tyet amulets, Roman signet rings and the fourth-century lapidaries all name it for steadiness rather than brilliance.
Chrysoprase
Apple-green chalcedony coloured by nickel, prized in Roman jewellery and later by Frederick the Great, who had Silesian mines worked for it.
Emerald
Green beryl, mined in Egypt before 1500 BCE and in Colombia at world-class quality. Almost every emerald is fractured and oiled, and the trade treats that as normal.
Aquamarine
The sailor's stone since Rome, thrown to Neptune for calm water. Nearly all of it is heated to move the colour from green towards blue.
Morganite
Pink beryl, named in 1911 for the banker J. P. Morgan. No ancient tradition, a great deal of modern engagement-ring demand.
Ruby
Red corundum, the ratnaraj or king of gems in Sanskrit, assigned to the Sun in Jyotish. Burmese stones carried into battle were said to be set under the skin.
Sapphire
Every colour of corundum except red. Medieval bishops wore it, Ceylon supplied it for two thousand years, and Jyotish treats blue sapphire as the fastest and riskiest of the nine gems.
Moonstone
Adularescence, that blue sheen floating under the surface, comes from layers inside the crystal scattering light. Sacred to the moon in India, where it is a traveller's gift.
Labradorite
Grey until the light hits it, then peacock blue and gold. Named for Labrador in 1770, and central to Inuit accounts of the aurora trapped in stone.
Amazonite
Blue-green microcline, worked in Egypt for the Book of the Dead and in Mesopotamia before that. Named for a river it has never been found beside.
Sunstone
Aventurescent feldspar that flashes copper when turned. Oregon's state gem, and a Viking navigation candidate alongside Iceland spar.
Lapis lazuli
A rock, not a mineral, mined at Sar-e-Sang in Afghanistan for six thousand years and ground into ultramarine, once costlier than gold.
Sodalite
Lapis without the gold flecks and at a fraction of the price. Named in 1811, so its lore is entirely modern, mostly about clear thinking.
Garnet
A whole family, not one stone, named for the pomegranate. Bohemian garnet jewellery, Anglo-Saxon cloisonné and January's birthstone.
Peridot
Olivine of gem quality, mined on Zabargad in the Red Sea since antiquity, and found in meteorites. The only common gem that comes in just one colour.
Topaz
Golden imperial topaz from Ouro Preto is the real thing; almost every blue topaz on sale was colourless until it was irradiated. November's birthstone with citrine.
Iolite
Strongly pleochroic, showing violet-blue one way and pale yellow the other. Proposed as the Viking sunstone used to find the sun through cloud.
Tanzanite
Found in 1967 at the foot of Kilimanjaro, in one place on earth, and added to December's birthstone list in 2002. Nearly all of it is heated.
Kunzite
Lithium spodumene, named in 1902 for the gemmologist George Kunz. It fades in sunlight, which is the rare case of a stone that genuinely must be kept in the dark.
Black tourmaline
Pyroelectric, so it attracts ash when warmed, which is why the Dutch called it aschentrekker. The single most-sold protective stone in modern practice.
Watermelon tourmaline
One crystal that changed its chemistry as it grew, leaving a pink core in a green rind. Slices show it best, and good ones are not cheap.
Lepidolite
A lithium mica, soft enough to mark with a fingernail, and the source of a persistent modern claim about mood that its chemistry does not support.
Kyanite
Two hardnesses in one crystal, soft along the blade and hard across it. Used as a compass needle in early Europe, and the mineralogist's favourite oddity.
Malachite
Banded copper carbonate, ground for Egyptian eye paint and for green pigment across Europe. Toxic as dust and in water, and beautiful in every other respect.
Azurite
Deep blue copper carbonate that slowly turns green as it converts to malachite, which is why medieval skies have gone the wrong colour in many paintings.
Rhodochrosite
Rose banded manganese carbonate, the national stone of Argentina, found in Inca-era mines. Soft, soluble in acid, and never to be worn in daily rings.
Calcite
The most polymorphic common mineral, and the source of Iceland spar, whose double refraction is the strongest candidate for the Viking sunstone.
Rhodonite
Pink manganese silicate veined with black oxide. Grouped here with its manganese cousin rhodochrosite, though it is chemically a silicate and much harder.
Selenite
Gypsum in its clear bladed form, named for the moon, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail and destroyed by water. The Naica cave crystals are eleven metres long.
Celestite
Pale blue strontium sulfate, usually sold as hollow geodes from Madagascar. Fragile, light-sensitive and one of the few genuinely blue minerals in nature.
Fluorite
The stone that gave fluorescence its name, and the Blue John of Derbyshire that Rome imported as murrine cups. Perfect octahedral cleavage makes it fragile.
Turquoise
Mined in Sinai before 3000 BCE and in the American Southwest for two thousand years. Porous, easily discoloured by oils, and among the most faked stones on the market.
Apatite
The mineral your own teeth and bones are made of, which is a better fact than most of its modern lore. Soft, and easily confused with better stones.
Jade
Two different minerals under one name, and the most culturally loaded stone on earth. Confucius read the five virtues in it; Mesoamerica valued it above gold.
Chrysocolla
Blue-green copper silicate, often stabilised in quartz to be workable. Named by Theophrastus for its use as a gold solder, which is what the word means.
Larimar
Found in one small area of the Dominican Republic and nowhere else, brought to market in 1974. Its lore is fifty years old and openly so.
Hematite
Iron oxide that streaks blood red however black it looks, which is where its name and its whole reputation come from. Ochre from it is the oldest pigment we have.
Pyrite
Fool's gold, in natural cubes so perfect they look cut. Struck for fire since the Neolithic, and unstable in humid air, where it can crumble and give off acid.
Lodestone
Naturally magnetised magnetite, the material of the first compasses in Han China and the root of every folk practice about attraction.
Diamond
Pure carbon, the hardest natural substance, and the stone whose modern meaning was written by an advertising campaign in 1947. Its supply chain deserves your attention.
Shungite
A carbon rock from Karelia containing fullerenes, with real documented use in water filtration and a large volume of unsupported claims about radiation.
Obsidian
Not a mineral but a glass, cooled too fast to crystallise. Aztec priests scried in polished mirrors of it, and its edge is sharper than a surgical scalpel.
Moldavite
Glass thrown out by a meteorite impact in Bavaria fifteen million years ago, found only in Bohemia. Scarce, expensive, and faked at industrial scale.
Opal
Not a crystal but packed silica spheres that split light into colour. Held unlucky in the nineteenth century because of a Walter Scott novel, which is the tradition's best cautionary tale.
Amber
Fossil resin, thirty to ninety million years old, that holds a static charge when rubbed. The Greek word for it, elektron, is where electricity got its name.
Jet
Fossil wood, light and warm to the touch, worked at Whitby since the Bronze Age and made into an industry by Victorian mourning dress.
Pearl
The only gem made by a living animal, and the only one that needs no cutting. June's birthstone, ruined by perfume, vinegar and time.
How to read a stone page
Every entry in this catalogue is built the same way, and the order is deliberate. It opens with the mineral: what the stone is chemically, how hard it is, which system it crystallises in, and where it comes out of the ground. That comes first because it is the part that is true regardless of what anyone believes, and because it settles a surprising number of arguments. It tells you that amethyst and citrine are the same mineral in two moods, that most black onyx is dyed grey chalcedony, and that lapis lazuli is a rock made of three minerals rather than a crystal at all.
The lore comes second, sorted by who said it. An Egyptian amulet-maker, a Jyotish astrologer, a Chinese scholar and a modern crystal author are four different people making four different kinds of claim, and running them together produces the vague soup that gives the subject its reputation. Where a stone has no ancient tradition, because it was found in 1967 or named after a banker in 1911, the page says that plainly instead of inventing a lineage.
Care comes third, and it matters more than beginners expect. Selenite dissolves in water. Kunzite fades in sunlight. Pyrite decays in humid air. Malachite is toxic as dust. A stone you look after badly is not a stone with a weak energy, it is a stone you have damaged.
Treatment, and what has to be declared
Assume a commercial gemstone has been treated until you are told otherwise. That is not cynicism, it is the trade's own baseline, and it is why disclosure standards exist at all.
Some treatments are universally accepted because they are permanent, stable and change nothing about how the stone survives daily life. Heating sapphire, ruby, tanzanite and aquamarine falls here, as does the irradiation that makes almost all blue topaz. A heated stone is a real stone, and the only thing that should move is the price.
Other treatments change the object itself. Lead-glass filling turns fractured, near-worthless corundum into something that looks like a clean ruby, and the filler is destroyed by a jeweller's torch, an ultrasonic cleaner or a household acid. The World Jewellery Confederation requires this material to be sold as composite ruby or as a manufactured product rather than simply as ruby, and the Federal Trade Commission requires the treatment to be disclosed. Polymer-impregnated jadeite, dyed and reconstituted turquoise and resin-stabilised malachite sit in the same category: real material, permanently altered, worth a fraction of the untreated equivalent.
A third group is unstable. Some irradiated colour fades on exposure to light, which is a defect rather than an enhancement, and it should be disclosed as such.
The practical rule for a buyer is short. Ask what was done to the stone, ask where it came from, and treat a seller who cannot answer either question as a seller who does not know.
What the catalogue does not claim
No stone here is presented as a treatment for any physical or mental condition, and none is described as able to guarantee an outcome or influence another person's choices. The traditions did make those claims, often, and the pages report that as history. Reporting a belief is not endorsing it.
What stone practice can honestly offer is a physical anchor for attention. Holding one small object with a name, a history and a set of associations gives a wandering mind something to return to, and a ritual gives a formless intention a shape. That is not nothing. It is simply not what the marketing says.
