Tarot: Sunday, October 11

A card drawn from one of three decks

Page of Swords

Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot
Page of Swords

A young figure on a hilltop with the sword held straight up, hair blown sideways, eyes on the horizon. The whole posture is readiness rather than attack. Your mind runs sharp and slightly restless today, which makes it the right day to ask the question you have been circling: read the document, make the direct call, check the assumption nobody has checked. The warning sits in the clouds behind the hill, which are quick and not yet settled. Keep the sharpness aimed at finding out rather than at winning the exchange.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

The sword is up and you will want to use it on somebody. This Page is gathering information rather than settling scores. Point the directness at a question instead of a person, and notice that you can be blunt and still be asking. An answer is worth more than a point scored.

Taurus

You would rather the facts were not disturbed, and the wind on this hill is moving everything. The Page has a question that could unsettle a view you have held for years. Ask it. Comfort resting on an assumption you have never checked is more fragile than the checking would be.

Gemini

This is your card and your hazard in one. The Page's sword turns easily into talk: bright, quick, endlessly branching, resolving nothing. Take one question all the way to an answer, in writing if you can. Curiosity with no conclusion is the empty chatter the card warns about by name.

Cancer

You read the atmosphere instead of asking, then act on what you inferred. The Page stands on open ground and says it out loud. Ask the plain question you have been answering privately for weeks. The reply may be kinder than the version you assembled out of signals.

Leo

You know how to look authoritative on a subject, and this card asks you to be a beginner in it. Say what you do not know, out loud, in front of somebody who does. The sword is raised here to learn with. Nobody on this hill is performing expertise.

Virgo

You have the questions written and the notes ordered, and the asking is the part this card is on. Send the query. Make the call. The Page does not wait for a complete framework before opening his mouth, and the answers he gets rearrange the framework anyway.

Libra

You soften every question until it stops asking anything. The Page is sharp on purpose and not unkind with it. Put the unhedged version to the person who can actually answer. Politeness that prevents information is costing you more than the small awkwardness would have.

Scorpio

You investigate without asking, because asking shows your hand. The Page works in the open on a bare hilltop with the wind visible in his hair. Try the direct question and let the other person see what you want to know. Watching gets you facts; asking gets you answers.

Sagittarius

You will take the big question and the confident conclusion in one motion. The Page stands at the start of a subject, and the clouds behind him are explicitly unsettled. Stay in the finding-out longer than is comfortable. The details you skip are where the conclusion goes wrong.

Capricorn

You dislike being at the beginning of anything, and this card puts you there with wind in your face. Beginnings belong to the Page. Take the course, ask the junior question, read the thing you were supposed to have read already. Competence starts with naming the gap.

Aquarius

You are quick with the counter-argument and slower with the plain question, because the plain question makes you ordinary for a moment. The Page's sword points up rather than across. Ask in order to understand something, and let the answer be new information rather than material.

Pisces

You sense the answer and skip the asking, then carry the impression around as though it were established. The Page stands on firm ground and holds the blade steady. Check one thing you have been assuming, against a real source or a real person. Intuition holds up better once it has been verified.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You gather information constantly and say very little about what you hold. The Page works out loud, on a bare hill, where everyone can see him. Ask the question directly for once. What comes back from asking is usually what the quiet collecting never reaches.

Ox

You prefer doing to examining, and this is a day for examining. A question asked before the work starts saves weeks of the wrong work. Stop and test the premise, even though stopping feels like delay. The hill exists in order to be looked out from.

Tiger

The raised sword reads as a starting gun to you. This Page is not charging, he is scanning. Put the energy into research and questions, and keep the blade up rather than swinging it. Nothing on the hill yet needs to be beaten.

Rabbit

You avoid the sharp question because it disturbs people, and you have been getting by on inference. The Page is direct, and nothing in the picture suggests he is being cruel with it. Ask plainly. Most people prefer the question to the careful circling around it.

Dragon

You will not ask about something you are supposed to already know. The Page's whole posture is unembarrassed inquiry: hair a mess, eyes open, no authority claimed. Ask the basic question in front of people. Pretending to knowledge is the only thing on this hill that can actually damage you.

Snake

You watch until the pattern reveals itself and rarely show what you are looking for. The Page asks, and shows his hand in the asking. Try the open question once and take the small loss of advantage. What can only be got by asking is precisely what patience will not deliver.

Horse

Sitting with an unanswered question is nearly unbearable for you, so you settle it with a guess and ride on. Stand on the hill a while instead. The sword is raised and waiting, not moving. One question answered properly is worth the ten you outran.

Goat

You hesitate to ask because the answer might be uncomfortable, then carry the uncertainty instead, which weighs more. The Page stands in the wind with nothing settled and asks anyway. Put the question. Not knowing is the part that is actually costing you sleep.

Monkey

You are quick enough to win any exchange, and this is not an exchange. The Page wants the truth of the thing rather than the better line. Ask in order to know, and resist turning the answer you get into a joke. Cleverness and clarity part company here.

Rooster

Asking questions is native to you, and so is the edge on them. The sword on this card is up, not pointed at anybody. Frame the question as a real one rather than as a test the other person is failing. You will get information instead of a defence.

Dog

You ask on behalf of other people and rarely for your own account. The figure on this hill is finding out for himself. Take the question that is yours: your own contract, your own standing, the thing you were told and never verified. Fairness starts with the facts.

Pig

You take things as they are presented and would rather not make anybody justify themselves. Nobody is being accused here by being asked. Get the detail confirmed before you agree to it. Trust survives better with the terms read.
