I Ching: Week of Monday, October 5

One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Splitting Apart

Hexagram 23 has five yin lines risen and one yang line left at the top. The classic draws it as a bed being taken apart from the legs upward while somebody is still lying in it, and the Judgment runs five words: it does not help to go anywhere. Something in real decline will ask for more of you this week, and the counsel is to give it nothing. Stop investing, begin no undertaking, separate yourself from what is coming apart. The third line's whole dignity is stepping out of the process. The Image names the only prevention and it is retrospective, since a position on top is held by what was given downward long before the legs went. The top line keeps the large fruit that was not eaten, and Return is the next figure in the sequence.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will fight the erosion. The Judgment is five words long and it says it does not help to go anywhere. Five of the six lines have already turned, so the fight is with a structure and not with an opponent.

Taurus

You will stay in the bed while the legs come off it. The third line's entire dignity is stepping out of the process. Holding position is not endurance here, it is being dismantled from underneath.

Gemini

You will talk the decline into something else. The legs come off while the description improves. Begin no undertaking and stop investing, which is the only instruction the figure gives.

Cancer

You will hold the household together through the collapse. A bed is being taken apart from the legs while somebody lies in it, and holding the blanket does not stop the carpenter. Get the people out of the room.

Leo

The decline is happening to the position rather than to you, and you will treat the two as one loss. Mountain over earth erodes from underneath, and a frame is what is coming apart. Your standing does not live in it.

Virgo

You will repair each leg as it is removed. The figure offers no undertaking that helps, and every line that tries to persist in it is destroyed. Put the tools down.

Libra

You will look for the balance point. A mountain resting on eroded earth has none left. Separate yourself from what is coming apart, and note that Return is the next figure in the sequence.

Scorpio

You will watch it come apart down to the last leg, because you want to see the end of things. The third line's dignity is stepping out before it finishes. Step out while stepping out is still a choice.

Sagittarius

Leaving is the counsel and you will do it loudly. It does not help to go anywhere, says the Judgment, which rules out the departure as an event. Separate quietly and stop putting anything in.

Capricorn

You will keep investing because of what you have already sunk in. Erosion has reached the fifth line of six here, and the Judgment offers nothing in exchange for more. Write the position off and keep your hands out of it.

Aquarius

You will explain the decline structurally, and the explanation will be correct. The Image points somewhere harder, at what a person on top failed to give downward while there was still time. That is a reading about conduct rather than systems.

Pisces

You will stay out of pity and come apart along with it. The bed is dismantled under whoever is lying in it, and sympathy is not a leg. Go.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will salvage. The top line keeps the large fruit that was not eaten, so take the seed and leave the timber where it falls.

Ox

You will bear the weight of a structure being taken apart beneath you. Weight changes nothing here, since the legs go regardless of what is resting on them. Stand off it.

Tiger

You will attack the decay. There is nothing to attack: the lines have turned already and the bed is coming apart from the legs up. Movement accelerates the collapse, which the Judgment says in five words.

Rabbit

You will leave early, which the third line calls dignity outright. Do it without apologising for it and without a speech. Erosion does not need a witness standing at the door.

Dragon

You will hold the position because the position is yours. Mountain over earth is a summit resting on ground that has already given way, and standing on it more firmly does not firm it. The standing is the exposure.

Snake

You will see which leg goes next and stay to watch it go. The fifth line strings the destructive force together like fish on a line, which makes it harmless and does not make it stop. Leave.

Horse

You will move because standing still is unbearable. The Judgment refuses movement in five words. Stillness here is not passivity, it is the one thing that does not speed the dismantling.

Goat

You will keep asking whether it can still be saved. Five of the six lines have already turned, and the book offers no undertaking that improves them. Take the uneaten fruit and let the bed go.

Monkey

You will find the collapse interesting and stay for the spectacle. Being amused does not exempt you from the bed. The large fruit that was not eaten is the only thing worth carrying out of the room.

Rooster

You will list what went wrong and in what order. The Judgment runs five words and none of them is an explanation. Close the ledger.

Dog

You will guard the bed while it is taken apart. Loyalty here means leaving with the person rather than standing by the frame. The third line steps out of the process, and that is the version to copy.

Pig

You will not notice until the legs are gone. A bed is being dismantled from the bottom while somebody lies in it, and the figure means you. Sit up and look at the floor.
