I Ching: Sunday, October 11

One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Revolution

Hexagram 49 means stripping a hide: change down to the skin rather than adjustment. Fire sits under a lake and one of them has to go. Everything here turns on timing and credibility, and belief is dated. On the day, you are believed; the same proposal made early is only a complaint. The third line gives the rule plainly. When talk of the change has gone round three times, commit, because the first impulse is called misfortune and endless discussion is not the alternative. The Image answers upheaval with a calendar, since knowing where you stand in the cycle is what makes the change read as necessary.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will act on the first impulse. The third line calls that misfortune by name and sets the condition: when talk of the change has gone round three times, commit. Not before, and not on the fourth round either.

Taurus

You will accept the change and want it done slowly. Stripping a hide is not gradual. What is slow here is the aftermath, which the top line reserves for consolidation, and that part is yours to run.

Gemini

The talk has gone round three times and you will start a fourth. The rule is in the third line and it ends with committing. The case has been made in public already, so act on the date.

Cancer

You will make the change and then spend everything managing how people feel about it. The Image regulates the calendar instead. Knowing exactly where the change sits in the cycle reassures more than reassurance does.

Leo

The great person changes like a tiger, markings unmistakable, and that part suits you. The part you will skip is the top line, which forbids a second upheaval and asks for consolidation instead.

Virgo

You will refine the proposal past the day it would have been believed. Belief is dated in this figure. Put the calendar in order, pick the day, and act on it with the draft you have.

Libra

You will look for the reform that offends nobody. Fire sits under a lake and one of them goes. Make the case publicly, let it circulate three times, and then take the side you have been avoiding taking.

Scorpio

You will make the change without making the case. On the day, you are believed, and what creates the day is the argument having already gone round. Silence moves the date rather than removing it.

Sagittarius

You will call the change liberation and skip the calendar. The Image regulates the seasons precisely so that an upheaval reads as necessary rather than arbitrary. Do the timekeeping before the stripping.

Capricorn

Radical change reads to you as indiscipline. The discipline in this figure is the calendar, and the rule is exact: three rounds of public talk, then commit. That is a procedure, not an impulse.

Aquarius

You have been right about this for a while, which is not the same as being believed. The Judgment dates belief, and the date is set by how often the argument has circulated rather than by how correct it is.

Pisces

You will change your face rather than your skin. The small person changes their face and the classic neither praises nor condemns it. Ge means down to the hide, and that is what is being asked here.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will change and keep the old arrangement in reserve. Stripping a hide leaves nothing to fall back on, which is what distinguishes this from an adjustment. Pick the day, then commit without the hedge.

Ox

You will refuse it. Fire under a lake cannot hold its position, and neither can yours. What the figure hands you afterwards is the slow work of settling the new arrangement, which is the part you are built for.

Tiger

The great person changes like a tiger, whose markings are unmistakable, which is your version of this. The third line adds the only condition, that the talk goes round three times first, because the first impulse is misfortune.

Rabbit

You will wait for someone else to declare it. The change in this figure needs a face and a date attached. Regret disappears after the act, the Judgment says, and not before it.

Dragon

You will announce the change and expect the announcement to be the change. Ge goes down to the skin. Afterwards the top line asks for consolidation rather than a second declaration.

Snake

You will read the right day precisely and let it pass unspoken. Belief is dated in this figure, and somebody has to be the one who speaks on the date. Be that person once.

Horse

You will change everything and be elsewhere for the aftermath. The top line spends its whole text on what follows and forbids a second upheaval. The consolidation is part of the change, not a chore after it.

Goat

You will wait for permission to change something already yours to change. The third line treats three rounds of public talk as the entire requirement, and it has happened. Put the day in the calendar and strip the hide.

Monkey

You will change the surface and enjoy the effect. The small person changes their face and the classic lets that pass unjudged. What is on offer to you is the leopard's version: finer than the tiger's and all the way down.

Rooster

You will revolutionise the details. Ge strips the hide off, which is not a detail operation. Make the case in public, wait for the third round, and then change the thing rather than its finish.

Dog

You will stay loyal to the thing being changed. Fire and lake cannot share the place, so the loyalty has to choose. The calendar is what lets you explain the choice to the people who trusted the old arrangement.

Pig

You will change when it becomes comfortable. Nothing about stripping a hide is comfortable. What the Judgment offers is that the regret disappears afterwards, which is payment on completion rather than in advance.
