The Lovers and the Moon

Two people stand in full daylight under an angel; a dog and a wolf howl at a moon that only reflects its light. The pair asks whether the choice in front of you is being seen clearly.

How the two cards meet

Smith drew the Lovers in plain daylight: Adam and Eve naked before their two trees, Raphael's wings spread above them, nothing hidden between the couple. The Moon is lit at second hand. A crayfish climbs out of a pool, a dog and a wolf howl on either side of a path, and the path runs between two towers into the distance. Side by side, the Lovers bring the question (a partner, an offer, a path to commit to) and the Moon describes the light it is being decided in, which is dim and easy to misread. The Moon's own tradition names this pairing as an illusion of love or a false lover, so even the upright reading carries a caution.

Air and Water are neutral to each other, and each card keeps its full voice. Six and eighteen make twenty-four, which reduces to six again: the quintessence is the Lovers itself. Under all the fog, the matter still comes down to a choice made on your values.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Leans yes

A strong attraction or choice with something still hidden: trust the feeling, then check the facts.

The pull is real and the picture is partial. The Lovers bring attraction, emotional union and an important choice made wholeheartedly; the upright Moon adds intuition, deep feeling and a part of the situation still under the surface. Romance under this pair has intensity and the sense of a soul bond, with a secret or an unspoken fear somewhere in it. Someone choosing between two partners, or deciding whether to take the next step, may feel sure on an instinctive level while missing a piece of information. At work, the Lovers set up a choice between two offers or paths, and the Moon warns that the current situation is not quite as it appears; if one option is creative work, the Moon favours the role that calls for intuition and deep understanding. Two financial opportunities can both look attractive, and one of them may turn out to be an illusion. Intuition is a fair guide here as long as it is tested against what can be verified.

Advice

Before you commit, ask the one direct question you have been avoiding, and weigh the answer alongside your instinct.

The Lovers upright, The Moon reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

You are ready to choose, but distrust and muddled information cloud the decision for now.

Confusion is the obstacle, and the Lovers keep pointing at honesty as the way through it. With the Moon reversed, perception is distorted: secrets, distrust and a tendency toward self-deception make it hard to tell what is real. The upright Lovers still want a clear, heartfelt choice, and the naked couple in Eden is the card's picture of having nothing to hide. A relationship with genuine warmth may be held back by things left unsaid, or by one partner concealing feelings out of fear, and here the reversed Moon asks for feelings to be expressed openly while the Lovers add mutual respect. On the job, a choice between two roles may rest on unreliable information, so nothing should be signed until the details are clarified. Any joint investment needs every figure verified before you agree to it. Once the fog lifts, the decision itself can be a good one.

Advice

Ask for the details in writing, or talk the choice through with an expert who has nothing to gain from it.

The Lovers reversed, The Moon upright

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: Leans no

Doubt about a bond meets a fog of fears and illusions, and a comforting story may not be true.

Here the Moon's old warning about an illusion of love comes closest. The reversed Lovers carry uncertainty about mutual feelings, inner conflict between heart and mind, and in some cases deceit or betrayal. The upright Moon fills the gaps with imagination, hidden fears and misreadings. The querent may doubt a partner without evidence, or trust someone too easily because the attraction feels fated. Unrequited love is possible, and so is a relationship resting on illusions on both sides. A work partnership may carry a conflict of interest that nobody has named, and something about the job may be kept out of view. Joint business ventures call for caution, because an opening that looks promising could rest on deception or on wishful thinking. Decisive action taken before the uncertainty passes tends to go wrong; on Smith's card the dog and the wolf howl at the same borrowed light, and neither sees much by it.

Advice

Hold off on any final decision about this person or deal until you can check at least one fact instead of a feeling.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Panic and denial drive a choice or a breakup that neither heart nor head has really agreed to.

Confusion runs in both directions now. The reversed Moon is bewilderment, denial and fear that distorts what the querent sees, and the reversed Lovers are an inability to choose, fear of commitment, or a rash choice made only to end the tension. Decisions tend to be made in a state of panic, or avoided until circumstances make them. A couple may drift apart through things left unsaid, each person questioning their feelings and neither saying so. Someone single may keep returning to a connection they already know is unbalanced. Contradictory signals at work make negotiations hard, and a partnership can unravel over a misunderstanding. Money moved out of fear or inflated hope tends to be lost. The reversed Moon recommends consulting someone who can see the whole picture, and the reversed Lovers say support or professional advice may be needed.

Advice

Talk it through with a counsellor, adviser or trusted friend before you act, and let them question the story you are telling yourself.

When this reading may not apply

When the question is about a partner's fidelity, read this pair slowly: the Moon can describe the querent's own anxiety as easily as someone else's secret, and the Lovers alone accuse no one. In a fertility question the Moon is read as hidden life growing in the dark, and beside the Lovers' union that reading can take over from deception. For creative work, the upright Moon favours projects built on intuition, so a choice between a safe job and an artistic one may lean toward the second. Read for the past, the pair often describes a relationship that turned out to be different from how it looked at the start.
