The Lovers and the Hermit

Two figures in a garden face one figure alone on a snowy peak. The pair asks how much solitude the querent needs before a decision about love or direction can be made well.

How the two cards meet

Card VI is company and card IX is solitude. The Lovers shows Adam and Eve together, open and unhidden; the Hermit stands alone on a summit in a grey hooded cloak, lifting a lantern whose six-pointed star lights only the next step. Side by side, the Lovers poses a choice and the Hermit insists on thinking it through first, so a decision about a partner, a career or a path comes from self-knowledge and not from pressure. Usually the Hermit sets the pace, and the pace is slow.

Air and Earth are contrary elements, and each card dampens the other a little: the Lovers' warmth cools, and the Hermit's retreat is harder to keep. Both cards answer to Mercury, through Gemini and Virgo, which makes this a thinking pair. The sum of six and nine is fifteen, the Devil, which works here as a prompt to check whether an attachment, or the fear of one, is shaping the decision.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Leans yes

Choose after reflection: time alone shows what the heart wants before the next step.

The decision is right, and so is the delay before it. Choosing with the heart works best here once the querent understands their own feelings, through quiet, self-analysis and the lessons of past relationships. Inside a couple, that often means giving each other personal space and then deciding about the future with clear eyes; both partners respect each other's room to breathe. Someone single may spend a season alone on purpose and come out of it knowing what kind of partner fits their values, which keeps old mistakes from repeating. At work, deciding between two directions benefits from research, a mentor's advice and careful planning, the lantern lighting one step at a time. With money, budgeting and study come before any joint investment. Nothing here is rushed, and the decision that comes out of the quiet is likely to last.

Advice

Take a few days alone before you answer, and come back with the one reason that settles it for you.

The Lovers upright, The Hermit reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Love is on offer, but the querent hides from it in a solitude that has gone too far.

Connection is available and the door is shut from the inside. Attraction and an important choice are present, while the reversed Hermit turns retreat into isolation, fear of rejection and a refusal to take advice. The querent may want love and still avoid every chance of it, or keep a partner at arm's length by not sharing emotions, with an idealised picture of love standing in for real contact. At work, a good collaboration goes unused because the querent works alone out of fear of mistakes. Money decisions stall through excess caution. Upright, the Lovers tells the querent not to be afraid of a new relationship or the next step, and to let someone help.

Advice

Accept one invitation you would normally decline, and tell one person plainly what you are afraid of.

The Lovers reversed, The Hermit upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Leans no

Doubts about a bond or a choice call for a step back and honest time alone.

Something has gone off balance, and the Hermit's answer is distance with a purpose. Uncertainty about feelings, disagreements and the struggle between desire and obligation are what the reversed Lovers brings to the table. The old man on the peak withdraws to understand them, lantern raised over the next step only. A couple may need a pause to work out what has gone wrong, and one person may decide they need time alone before anything else can be settled. For a single querent, sorting out their own feelings comes before choosing anyone, especially after a disappointment. At work, a conflict of interest or a stalled partnership calls for analysis and a period of learning; a quick decision would likely be the wrong one. Money matters ask for caution and a close look at each option before committing to either. The retreat is healthy as long as it leads to an answer and does not become a way of avoiding one.

Advice

Set a date by which you will have thought the question through, and spend the time until then on it, alone.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Alienation and indecision: withdrawal deepens the rift and no choice gets made.

Discord pushes people apart, and isolation keeps them there. On one side are imbalance, fear of commitment and unclear feelings; on the other, loneliness, stubbornness and a refusal to listen. Partners may stop sharing emotions altogether, each lost in their own thoughts, until the distance becomes the relationship. Someone single may avoid new relationships and settle into a solitude that brings no peace. At work, the querent withdraws from colleagues just when a decision about direction is due, and opportunities slip past. Money stays frozen in fearful inaction, and caution turns into missed chances. Open communication and a return to active life are the way out, and accepting help from others belongs to that, even when it feels hard.

Advice

Contact one person you have pulled away from this week, and ask for their view before you decide anything.

When this reading may not apply

If the querent has just left a relationship, the upright Hermit can describe healthy recovery time and the Lovers the future choice that recovery makes possible. When the Hermit is the significator, it can stand for a reserved person, a mentor or teacher, and the Lovers shows a decision that person is helping with. If the querent is exhausted, the upright Hermit's retreat reads as rest and recovery, and the Lovers' choice can wait until it is over. In an advice position, the pair says decide slowly and alone, then share the decision.
