The Lovers and the Devil

The same man and woman appear free in one card and chained in the other. The pair asks whether the bond in the querent's life lifts them or holds them.

How the two cards meet

These two cards were built as a pair. Smith drew the naked couple of the Lovers again in card XV, now horned and tailed and chained to a black pedestal beneath a bat-winged figure with an inverted pentagram on his forehead, and yet the collars around their necks are loose enough to lift off. Fifteen reduces to six, so the numbers link them as well as the pictures. Together they set free choice against compulsion: a love made under Raphael's blessing, and an attachment driven by fear, desire or possession. Most of the work in reading them is telling the two apart.

Air and Earth are contrary, so the cards pull against each other, and that tension is what the pair describes. The World, card XXI, is the quintessence of six and fifteen: once the attachment is understood, the querent can close the cycle and move on whole.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Intense attraction that borders on obsession: love and compulsion tangled together.

The chemistry is strong and so is the hook. A real attraction and a real choice sit beside passion that verges on dependency, possessiveness and the risk of losing self-control. Together the upright cards often mark a karmic or twin-flame bond, magnetic and strongly felt, which shows each person the side of themselves they have not healed. They can also mark addictive chemistry mistaken for destiny. In work questions, the querent may be choosing between a path that fits their values and one that pays more while binding them, such as a job held through fear of losing income or status. An offer that looks irresistible deserves caution where money is concerned. The connection may be genuine, and an honest look at what keeps it going comes before any further step.

Advice

Ask yourself what you would lose if you stepped back for a week, and notice whether the answer is love or fear.

The Lovers upright, The Devil reversed

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Leans yes

The chains come off: a choice made freely after breaking an old dependency.

The collars are lifted and the couple walks back into the garden. A reversed Devil means liberation from dependency, awareness of attachments and the end of a pattern of control, and with the Lovers upright that freedom becomes a sincere, conscious choice. Someone leaving a relationship that caused more suffering than joy can now choose love on healthier terms, or a couple can rebuild their bond without manipulation or jealousy. Sexual attraction may cool a little as the obsession fades, and what remains is easier to trust. At work, the querent lets go of a job held through fear and chooses a path that fits their values. Getting out of debt or a binding agreement opens a fresh start with money, though new contracts still deserve a careful read for hidden pitfalls. The reversed Devil adds one warning: after breaking free, watch that an old habit does not return in a new form.

Advice

Name the old habit you have broken and decide now what you will do instead when it tempts you again.

The Lovers reversed, The Devil upright

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

A toxic bond: dependency, manipulation or deceit where free choice should be.

The garden has become the Devil's pedestal. Imbalance, deceit and unhealthy relationships are what the reversed Lovers brings, and the upright Devil adds the chain: possessiveness, control, mistrust and an attachment kept alive by fear of loss. Romantically, the bond may run on jealousy or manipulation, or on an exciting encounter whose intensity hides its cost, and the querent may feel unable to leave and unable to be happy staying. At work, an authoritarian environment and a choice of money over principle leave the querent trapped. The urge to make money by any means can lead to dishonest deals. The Devil's picture holds the way out, collars loose enough to slip, and the first step is admitting what the attachment costs.

Advice

Tell one trusted person outside the relationship what is happening, and ask them to help you plan your next step.

Both reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Leans no

Breaking free of an unhealthy bond, often through a breakup, with old habits waiting to return.

Liberation and disappointment arrive together. The chains loosen as obsession fades and illusions fall away, and the relationship or choice that rested on them comes apart. For many querents this is a breakup that brings relief as well as grief, or an attraction that fades and turns out to have little underneath. The danger lies in the reversed Devil's other face, self-deception and weak will, which can pull the querent back or into a similar pattern with someone new. At work, the querent may leave a binding job without yet knowing what they want next. Freedom from a debt or a bad deal comes with some losses. Staying free takes awareness and patience.

Advice

Keep your distance from the old situation for a set period, and make no decision about a new bond until it has passed.

When this reading may not apply

When the question is about someone who frightens or harms the querent, this pair is no matter for interpretation: it calls for practical help from people and services that protect safety. If an addiction is part of the picture, the Devil points to it before it describes the relationship, and Temperance or Strength nearby favours recovery. Looking back, the pair often shows an old obsession whose patterns still shape how the querent chooses partners. When the Lovers is the significator, the Devil shows the temptation or attachment the querent is weighing.
