The Hierophant and the King of Pentacles

A king in a robe of grapevines rests his foot on a stone before his castle, and an elder raises his hand in blessing. The pair joins the keeper of values to the keeper of wealth.

How the two cards meet

Two seated authorities, one spiritual and one material. The Hierophant holds a golden triple cross between grey pillars; the King of Pentacles holds a coin and a sceptre on a throne carved with bulls, his robe covered with grapes and vines, a castle behind him and a piece of armour showing under the robe. Under the Hierophant's lead, the King's wealth is measured against a moral code: how money is earned, kept and given.

The two share more than Earth. The Hierophant is the Major card of Taurus, and the King's bulls and his place in the zodiac put him in Taurus too, so patience, endurance and attachment to what lasts are doubled. When both are upright that makes a patron, an institution with resources, a business run on principle. When both fall, it can make an institution that has confused its money with its mission.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Yes

Principled wealth: a patron, a trusted adviser or a well-run institution with resources.

Money and values sit at the same table. Steady, conservative earning and respect for proven methods from the Hierophant combine with the King's business acumen, long-term investment and generosity as a provider. A respected businessperson may sponsor the querent's education or project. A bank, a university or a long-established firm may offer a stable role with real prospects. Financial advice from an experienced, ethical person is worth following. For a couple, the King's reliability and the Hierophant's commitment point toward marriage, a family home and a shared legacy. The bulls carved on the throne stand for diligence and endurance, and the gains here come at their pace.

Advice

Ask the most financially experienced person you trust to review your long-term plan, and follow their advice on one decision.

The Hierophant upright, King of Pentacles reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Greed or reckless spending runs into ethics, rules and an honest audit.

The King has lost control of the treasury. The reversed King of Pentacles brings greed, financial recklessness, careless budgeting and an overbearing wish to control others through money. The upright Hierophant holds the standard the King has dropped: honest accounts, a code of ethics, a sober adviser who will not flatter. A business may face an audit or a compliance review that forces better practice. A family member who uses money to control others may be checked by an elder everyone respects. In a relationship, financial dependence or a partner obsessed with money calls for a frank conversation, possibly with a counsellor. The way back is through rules the King once kept.

Advice

Set a monthly budget with a written limit on discretionary spending, and have someone you respect check it with you each month.

The Hierophant reversed, King of Pentacles upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Leans yes

Self-made success outside the traditional path, with friction from the old guard.

The fortune was built without a blessing. A reversed Hierophant rejects the conventional career, the family's expectations or the institution's rules, and the upright King shows the material success that follows anyway: a business founded without a degree, wealth earned in a field the querent's community distrusts, an independent practice that pays well. Respect from traditional quarters may lag behind the results. The King's practical skill and patience make the success durable. In a relationship, the couple may arrange property and money by their own rules, outside custom. The King's hidden armour still matters: unconventional wealth needs the same protection as the old kind.

Advice

Put your business or savings on a proper legal footing, with contracts and accounts, so independence does not mean exposure.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: Leans no

Hypocrisy and greed at the top: authority misused for money and control.

The temple and the treasury have both gone wrong. When the Hierophant is reversed he can stand for hypocrisy and bad advice from authority figures, and the reversed King adds greed, dishonest dealing and a desire to dominate. This state can describe an organisation that preaches values while exploiting its staff, a financial adviser who serves himself, or a family elder who controls an inheritance for his own ends. Losses follow from trusting the wrong authority. In a relationship, one partner may use money and rules to dictate the other's life. Distance, independent advice and documentation protect the querent better than confrontation alone.

Advice

Get a second opinion from an independent professional before you sign anything or hand over money to someone in authority.

When this reading may not apply

If the King stands for a specific person, such as a father, an employer or a benefactor, the Hierophant points to the principles behind his use of money, and the reading describes the querent's relationship with him. A question about a loan, a sponsorship or a job in finance makes the pair literal. A querent who controls a family's or a company's money may find the reversed states describing their own conduct. As advice, the upright pair says to build wealth by methods you would be willing to explain to the most principled person you know.
