The Fool and Strength
The traveller with his leaping dog meets the woman who calms a lion with her bare hands: courage for a new start, and the self-control to see it through.
How the two cards meet
Strength gives the Fool something he does not carry in his bag: the nerve to leap paired with mastery over his own instincts. The images make the link plain. At the Fool's heel a small white dog jumps about, standing for instinct and the animal side of nature; in Strength a woman in white closes a red lion's jaws without force, the lemniscate floating over her head. The Fool's instinct runs free, while Strength's has been befriended.
Read together, the pair describes a beginning that takes courage and asks for patience, diplomacy and emotional control along the way. Strength's Fire feeds the Fool's Air, and her number, VIII, is also where the pair's quintessence falls, so inner power, and how gently it is used, runs through all four states.
Combinations are common patterns, not rules
The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.
Four ways the pair can fall
Both upright
Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: YesThe nerve to leap into something new, backed by calm confidence and steady self-control.
Brave without being reckless, confident without forcing anything: that is the querent this state describes. The Fool supplies the willingness to try the unknown; Strength supplies the inner resilience to keep going when the new thing gets hard, along with patience and self-discipline. Strength works through patience, so the start may be bold while the results arrive slowly. A new romance or a fresh phase of an old one combines playfulness with mature passion, a bond in which both people help each other grow. At work, the pair suits a step into a demanding new role, where the Fool's openness and Strength's endurance under pressure work together. With money, a new venture can bring stability when it rests on self-belief and skilful negotiation. The leap Strength approves of is a gentle one.
Advice
Take the frightening first step you have been postponing, and agree with yourself in advance how you will stay calm if the first result is poor.
The Fool upright, Strength reversed
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yetEager to begin, but self-doubt or runaway emotions are undermining the start.
The will to start something new is present; the inner reserves are not. Reversed Strength brings insecurity, fear and a struggle to manage emotions, and at times the opposite extreme, uncontrolled passion or flashes of anger. A carefree Fool can mask either problem for a while, setting off cheerfully and then stalling at the first obstacle, or charging into a romance on passion alone. Watch for a dynamic where one partner dominates, or where strong feelings run ahead of respect. At work, a new project may exceed the querent's current capacity, and the reversed card recommends rest or outside help. With money, impulsive spending is the risk. One part of this state helps: reversed Strength advises looking at problems with fresh eyes, and the upright Fool sees the world exactly that way, without old fears attached.
Advice
Start small enough that a setback cannot shake you, and line up one person you can call for support before you begin.
The Fool reversed, Strength upright
Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Not yetPatience and self-control arrive to calm the querent's rashness before it costs them.
The woman closing the lion's jaws without force is the picture of what this reversed Fool needs. He is rash, short on self-control and quick to decide without thinking; upright Strength brings mastery over instincts and the patience to think before acting. Her Fire is friendly to his Air, so the help is easy to receive. A steady, mature partner can bring order to someone unserious about love, as long as the steady one does not turn into a guardian. At work, discipline and endurance carry a half-prepared project to a sound footing. Financially, Strength's firm grip on one's position checks the reversed Fool's reckless spending. The flaw is real, and here it is in good hands.
Advice
When the urge to rush comes up this week, wait ten minutes and breathe before deciding, and keep a note of what you chose.
Both reversed
Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: NoImpulses without restraint and courage without footing: rash moves, outbursts and shaky confidence.
Recklessness and a lack of self-control from the Fool meet uncontrolled passion, fear and a loss of personal power from reversed Strength, and the friendly elements let each feed the other's weakness. The querent may lash out, spend on impulse and make rash moves, then sink into self-doubt once the damage shows. Partners may slip into volatile behaviour, power struggles or a dependency driven by fear of being alone. At work, accumulated stress and shattered confidence make ordinary tasks feel insurmountable. Money suffers from reckless spending and rash investments, and hesitation at the wrong moment adds to the losses. Reversed Strength recommends diplomacy in place of force, and professional help with self-esteem if the pattern keeps repeating. Recovery comes before any new start.
Advice
Take a real break from the decision for a week, and if anger or fear keeps running the show, talk to a counsellor or another qualified professional.
When this reading may not apply
Strength cannot be hurried, so in a timing question even the upright pair asks for patience after a bold start. If the question is about a volatile relationship, the reversed Strength warnings about domination and manipulation outweigh the Fool's lightness; where aggression is involved, support from people trained to help comes before any card. As an obstacle, upright Strength can show caution or restraint slowing the Fool's start. In an advice position, the pair says to act bravely and gently at once.
