The Fool and the Six of Pentacles
A traveller with a small bag beside a merchant holding scales. The pair is about the help a new beginning receives, and whether that exchange is fair.
How the two cards meet
On the Six of Pentacles a merchant holds a pair of scales in one hand and drops coins to two kneeling figures with the other, measuring what he gives. Beside him the Fool carries little more than a small bag, which puts him naturally on the receiving side of that picture. The pair usually describes a new beginning that depends on someone else's support: a sponsor, a grant, a family loan, a mentor who opens a door. It can also show the Fool as the giver, sharing time or money freely with no plan for a return.
Is the exchange fair? The Lovers, the quintessence of 0 and 6, keeps that question between two parties at the centre of every state. Air and Earth sit in contrary dignity, so the Fool's independence relaxes enough to accept help, and the Six's careful measuring loosens a little.
Combinations are common patterns, not rules
The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.
Four ways the pair can fall
Both upright
Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: YesFair, generous support arrives to help a brand-new venture or chapter get off the ground.
A scholarship, an investor who wants a reasonable return, a relative's loan with clear terms, a senior colleague who mentors a newcomer: the Six of Pentacles brings generosity weighed on fair scales, and the Fool is open, trusting and ready to begin. He can also be the giver, sharing knowledge or money with the same lightness he brings to everything. A relationship starts with warmth and reciprocity, each person giving attention and care without keeping score, and an established couple shares problems and successes with equal weight. Expect a bonus, a new professional opportunity or funding that lets a new project begin. The support may be enough to start with, though perhaps not enough to finish without further effort.
Advice
Accept the help on offer, put the terms in writing even if they feel informal, and agree now on how you will repay or return the favour.
The Fool upright, Six of Pentacles reversed
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yetAn eager new start leans on help that comes with strings attached or an uneven balance.
Strings attached, a power play, help that may not be sincere, or a debt that grows heavier than it looked: the reversed Six of Pentacles shows an unequal offer, and the upright Fool, eager to begin, is willing to accept it. His innocence can overlook the small print. A fresh romance may tilt early, with one person giving far more time and feeling than the other, or a partner using gifts to gain the upper hand. A sponsor, employer or business partner may expect more than they say, or share profits unevenly, and enthusiasm can sign up too quickly. The new path itself remains worth pursuing, and the arrangement around it needs a second look.
Advice
Before accepting any offer, ask in plain words what is expected in return, and walk away from terms you cannot describe back to the person.
The Fool reversed, Six of Pentacles upright
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yetFair help is available, but carelessness or fear wastes the support on offer.
Money, advice or a chance to learn is offered on fair terms by the upright Six of Pentacles. The reversed Fool either spends it carelessly, borrows without a plan and overestimates what can be done with it, or refuses it out of fear of anything new and an inability to receive. Disregard for others' advice is part of the reversed Fool's pattern, and here it costs a real opportunity. A generous partner gives steadily while the other treats the bond lightly or holds back from committing, which can leave the giver feeling undervalued over time. A mentor or employer offers backing, and it is squandered through thoughtless risk or missed preparation. Take the help seriously or let it go cleanly.
Advice
Decide exactly what the help on offer is for, and use it only for that purpose for the next three months.
Both reversed
Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: NoRash borrowing on unfair terms leaves debt and a lopsided relationship.
A loan taken on impulse, an exploitative arrangement entered without reading it, money handed to someone who never returns the favour: these are the likely stories. The reversed Fool acts without planning or self-control, and the reversed Six of Pentacles brings strings attached, debt, failed investments and dealings that may be dishonest. The loss tends to build slowly rather than all at once. One partner invests time and feeling while the other takes the most for the least effort, and neither stops to look at the pattern. Expenses outrun income, a business partner shares profits unevenly, and a gambling streak makes it worse. Learning to say no is the first repair.
Advice
List every debt and every person you owe or who owes you, and refuse any new loan or favour until that list is settled.
When this reading may not apply
Read the roles first. If the querent is the one giving, the Fool may describe the person they are supporting, and the reversed Fool then warns that the help is being wasted. In a 'what to let go of' position, even the upright pair suggests ending a one-sided arrangement. As an obstacle, it can mean someone else holds the scales over a new plan. For questions about another person's motives, the cards describe the exchange between you and stop short of reading their mind. Next to the Emperor, read the balance of power more strictly.
