The Empress and the Devil

A mother in a garden of plenty and a horned figure on a black pedestal with a chained couple below, the woman's tail ending in grapes. The pair asks when comfort and desire stop feeding you and start holding you.

How the two cards meet

Both cards rule the physical world. The Empress is its generous side: fertility, sensuality, comfort and material abundance. The Devil is its binding side: desire, attachment, materialism and control. In the Devil's picture, Eve's tail ends in a cluster of grapes, a sign of fertility and earthly ties, so the Empress's harvest is present even in the chains. Together they often describe a passionate, physical relationship, a lifestyle of comfort that has become hard to give up, or money and possessions that have started to own their owner.

Both are Earth, so the pair is strongly material and slow to shift. The Devil usually decides the reading: upright he turns the Empress's gifts into attachments, and reversed he loosens the collars so her abundance can be enjoyed freely. The collars in his picture are loose enough to lift off. Add III and XV for XVIII and the quintessence is the Moon, illusion and hidden fear underneath the pleasure.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Abundance and passion turn into attachment: pleasure, money or a bond that is hard to walk away from.

Plenty becomes a cage with an open door. The Empress brings sensuality, comfort and prosperity; the Devil turns them toward possession, temptation and dependency. In love this is often an intense physical attraction, unforgettable and also controlling, with mistrust and manipulation close behind. A couple may be bound more by habit, money or fear of being alone than by the tenderness the Empress stands for. At work, a well-paid position or a comfortable status keeps the querent in a job that no longer fits. With money, real growth is possible, and the Devil warns against making it by any means or letting the wish to accumulate lead to dishonest deals. The Moon at the root suggests the querent is not seeing the whole picture. Things change once the attachment is recognized.

Advice

Name the comfort you would find hardest to give up, and go without it for one week to see how much it holds you.

The Empress upright, The Devil reversed

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Leans yes

Free of an old dependency, you can enjoy love, pleasure and plenty on your own terms.

The collar comes off and the garden is still there. Reversed, the Devil brings liberation: breaking a habit, ending a controlling relationship, paying off debt, waking up from an illusion. The upright Empress shows what freedom opens onto: warmth, sensuality, creativity and a life that feels abundant without being owned by it. Someone leaving a toxic bond may find a nurturing relationship, or a couple may let go of possessiveness and rediscover tenderness. Passion can cool a little as obsession fades, which leaves room for real affection. At work, the querent may step away from a job held only out of fear and put their creativity to better use. Financially, release from debt or a draining arrangement allows a fresh, healthier start. Old habits can return, so the reversed Devil advises not slipping back.

Advice

Mark the habit or tie you have broken with a concrete change, a deleted number, a closed account, a new routine, so it stays broken.

The Empress reversed, The Devil upright

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Smothering care meets the need to control: dependency, possessiveness and exhaustion bind both sides.

Care and control become hard to tell apart. The reversed Empress shows dependency, overprotection, someone domineering under the guise of care, or a person who has neglected themselves; the upright Devil adds attachment, manipulation and the fear of loss. In a relationship, this can describe a smothering dynamic where one person clings and the other controls, or a bond kept alive by guilt and need. A parent may find it impossible to let grown children go. Addictions to comfort, food, shopping or a person may stand in for the nurture that is missing. Work and money follow the same pattern: a draining job the querent feels unable to leave.

Advice

Talk to a counsellor or a support group about the pattern you keep returning to, and go to the first session this month.

Both reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Leans no

Breaking free from a tie or habit, though the well is empty and recovery has only begun.

The chains are coming off and there is little left in the larder. Reversed, the Devil means release from a dependency, a controlling relationship or financial bondage, and an awakening from illusion. Reversed, the Empress shows that the querent comes out of it depleted: tired, lacking self-care, perhaps short of money, creative energy blocked. A person who has just left a possessive relationship may feel relief and emptiness at the same time. At work, the decision to leave a toxic environment is right, while the resources for the next step still need rebuilding. Finances may be freed from debt yet still be thin. The freedom is real, and growth returns as the querent takes care of themselves and resists going back to old habits.

Advice

Choose three small ways to look after yourself daily, and keep them up for the first month of your new freedom.

When this reading may not apply

When the question involves addiction or a controlling or abusive relationship, the pair is a prompt to seek professional and practical support; the reading cannot replace either. If the Devil is the significator, the Empress shows what the querent is attached to, often comfort, a partner or money. In questions about another person, the cards describe the querent's experience of the bond and cannot show the other person's intentions. In an advice position, both upright say enjoy the good things while noticing which ones you could not give up.
