The Empress and the Knight of Wands

A rider on a rearing horse, both front hooves off the ground, and a woman at rest among her crops. The pair is about putting a ripe plan or a warm feeling into motion, and about keeping it alive at speed.

How the two cards meet

The Knight of Wands rides the one horse in the deck with both front legs in the air, salamanders on his tunic and a staff in his hand, ready to leave before anyone has finished talking. He is bold action, passion, adventure and travel. The Empress is the opposite tempo: she grows things over seasons and enjoys them where they stand. Together, the Empress supplies something worth acting on and the Knight supplies the nerve to act on it now.

As the Major card, the Empress sets the subject, often a creative plan, a business, a home or a relationship. Her Earth and his Fire are neutral, so his heat neither scorches her ground nor stalls in it. A court card in the pair means no quintessence; the reading rests on the meeting of patience and momentum. Whether he carries her harvest to market or scatters it on the road depends on the orientation of each card.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Yes

Ripe plans go into bold action, and passion arrives with real warmth behind it.

The plan is ready, and so is the rider. The Empress brings matured ideas, prosperity and plans that have fallen on fertile ground; the upright Knight brings initiative, quick decisions and the courage to take a calculated risk. A project launches, a new stream of income opens, or a trip connected to work or family goes ahead. Someone single may meet a passionate, adventurous person, possibly while travelling, and the Empress adds sensuality and tenderness to the excitement. A couple can feel their attraction flare up again and make a bold shared decision. At work, a creative project enters a fast phase, and the querent's energy carries colleagues along with it. The Knight still asks for one check: that the plan rests on actual capabilities and not on optimism.

Advice

Set a launch date for the plan you have been preparing and announce it to one person who will hold you to it.

The Empress upright, Knight of Wands reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Good resources meet reckless haste; the harvest risks being spent before it is gathered.

Reversed, the Knight of Wands is impulsiveness without follow-through: big talk, uncontrolled spending, hasty investments and a passion that flares and fades. Against the upright Empress, that energy threatens something valuable. Her abundance is real and her plans are sound, and the reversed Knight wants to rush them, or to spend what she has built on a whim. An intense attraction may rest mostly on physical pull, with little room for the care the Empress wants to give; she advises protecting her warmth until it is matched. A business may be expanding faster than its resources allow, and the reversed Knight warns of a failed launch if the pace continues. The Empress's ethical, steady management is the correction. The pace has to come under control first.

Advice

Put a 48-hour wait on any purchase, investment or commitment above a sum you set today.

The Empress reversed, Knight of Wands upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

A burst of energy arrives while the querent is drained; borrowed momentum will not last.

The reversed Empress is running low: exhaustion, inner insecurity, blocked creative energy, perhaps dependency on someone else for comfort. Into that comes the upright Knight with adventure, quick decisions and a push to move. His energy can break a long stagnation and get a stalled project going. The danger is leaning on it. An exciting new partner may sweep the querent off their feet at the moment when the querent's own self-care is weakest, and the attraction fills a gap that the reversed Empress needs to fill herself. At work, a fast-moving colleague or project drags the querent into a pace they cannot sustain, and the familiar result is burnout. First restore your own footing, then ride.

Advice

Before you join someone else's plan, set three things you will keep doing for yourself no matter how fast it moves.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Wasted resources, quarrels and a short-lived passion: neither card can hold steady.

Nothing here is managed. The reversed Empress means wastefulness and an inability to conserve resources, and the reversed Knight means reckless steps, impulsive anger and plans abandoned halfway. Money slips away through hasty decisions and spending meant to cheer the querent up. Romance can turn into a cycle of passion and quarrels, with promises left unkept and one person swinging between clinging and indifference. At work, burnout and conflict feed each other, and a project launched in a rush stalls for lack of organisation. Both cards ask for the same correction: stop, reassess and plan realistically. With money in particular, the reversed Empress asks for conservative, well-considered decisions.

Advice

Freeze new spending and new commitments for a month and use that month to sort out what you already have.

When this reading may not apply

If the Knight represents a specific person in a love question, the pair describes the querent's attraction and the feeling between them; it does not tell you whether that person will stay or return. When the question is about travel or relocation, the Knight takes the lead and the Empress points to a move toward comfort or family. In an obstacle position, the upright Knight can mean impatience getting in the way of something that needs time to grow. When the Empress is the significator, the Knight describes a person or a burst of activity arriving in a settled life, and the querent's choice is how much of it to let in.
