Temperance and the Six of Cups

Two children pass a cup of white flowers in an old courtyard; Temperance's angel, one foot in a pool, blends the water in its two cups. The pair asks how much of the past belongs in the present, and how to keep the good part of it.

How the two cards meet

Memory and mixing. The Six of Cups shows two children in a walled courtyard, the taller one handing the smaller a cup filled with five-petalled white flowers while a guard with a halberd walks away behind them. It is the card of nostalgia, reunion and generosity given without a ledger. Temperance is the card that combines things in the right proportion, and as the Major it decides what the memory is for. Upright, it uses the past to heal: old friends, family values and lessons learned are poured into the present until they fit.

Their numbers, XIV and 6, add up to XX, Judgment, the quintessence of the pair: the call to review the past honestly and then rise from it. Temperance's Sagittarian Fire pulls against the Six's Water, and that contrary relation keeps the nostalgia from turning syrupy while slowing any reunion.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Yes

Old ties are mended at a calm pace, and warm memories help the present instead of replacing it.

A reunion handled with patience. The Six brings old friends, familiar places and the return of someone after a long absence; Temperance brings the calm and diplomacy that let the reconnection last. A couple can draw on shared memories to renew warmth while still moving forward, and an old acquaintance may come back into a single querent's life, with time to see whether the feeling holds in the present. At work, proven methods and advice from former colleagues fit into a long-term plan, and money may come in from an old client or a past venture. The white flowers in the cups suggest kindness given freely, and the angel keeps that kindness balanced on both sides.

Advice

Get in touch with one person from your past you miss, and suggest a short, simple meeting before planning anything bigger.

Temperance upright, Six of Cups reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

The past has taken up too much room, and Temperance is the slow work of putting it back in proportion.

Memories are holding the querent in place. The reversed Six is fixation on the past, idealising, old grievances resurfacing and a reluctance to leave the comfort zone; upright Temperance answers with the art of maintaining moderation, and it treats nostalgia as one ingredient among several, never the whole drink. Temperance's healing here is gradual. Someone measuring a current partner against an idealised ex can learn to see the relationship as it is, and a couple stuck in old patterns can make small, regular changes instead of reliving the early years. When one partner lives in memories and the other wants to move forward, the angel asks both for compromise. At work, a habit of reviving outdated methods or longing for a former job gives way to strategic decisions based on present conditions. In money, the fear of investing in anything new eases when the querent follows a balanced plan that keeps some old security and adds one new element. Unfinished business from the past still has to be addressed, and Temperance favours a calm conversation over a confrontation.

Advice

Decide which one habit or attachment from the past you will keep and which one you will drop, and act on the second this month.

Temperance reversed, Six of Cups upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

A warm return to the past, handled without proportion: the reunion is rushed or the giving is lopsided.

The Six of Cups offers a gift, an old friend, a familiar place, a revived romance. Reversed Temperance takes it without restraint. The querent may throw themselves into a reunion after one good conversation, spend heavily on recreating an old experience, or keep giving to someone who gives little back. Pollack's reading of the taller child's gloved hand, generosity flowing down from the one who holds the power, fits this state. Someone who reconnects with a former partner can drift into the same unevenness that ended things the first time, with one side putting in more effort. At work, nostalgia for a past team or project leads to impatient decisions, and old colleagues may be called in before the plan is clear. Money from an old client or partner is welcome and is spent quickly. The warmth in the Six is real; reversed Temperance is the missing sense of measure.

Advice

Before you commit time or money to an old connection, agree on one small next step and see how it goes for a month.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Old grievances and imbalance keep each other going, and nobody steps out of the familiar fight.

The past turns into a battleground. The reversed Six revives old conflicts and resentment that nobody can let go of, and reversed Temperance hardens them with discord, stubbornness and an unwillingness to make concessions. Family gatherings reopen the same arguments, and a couple repeats a pattern from years ago, each side keeping score. Friends from the past mostly bring tension when they return. At work, old misunderstandings with colleagues block cooperation and outdated approaches persist because nobody will compromise on change. Money stays tied to old obligations or a failed idea someone keeps trying to revive. Both cards ask for acceptance and patience, and the first step is often outside help.

Advice

Choose one long-running grievance and talk it through with a counsellor or neutral third person before raising it with the other side.

When this reading may not apply

In reconciliation questions the pair describes the querent's longing and the pace of any contact; it does not say that an old relationship should be resumed, and a bond that ended for good reason stays a matter for caution. If the Six turns up as a repeating card, the reading usually points inward, to childhood memories that Temperance can help heal. Placed in the past, the two cards point to a family or early influence that shaped the querent's sense of balance.
