Temperance and the Knight of Wands

A knight on a rearing chestnut stallion, his horse's front hooves off the ground, beside Temperance, the card of moderation and calm. Courage and moderation have to share the saddle here.

How the two cards meet

Smith drew the Knight of Wands' horse rearing with both front hooves in the air, the only airborne mount among the four Knights. Red plumes stream back from the rider's yellow armour, the wand in his hand sprouts green leaves and is held like a lance, and the desert behind him rushes away. He is courage, passion and the readiness to move before certainty arrives.

Temperance is that certainty's slower cousin. It counts calm, prudence and the art of moderation among its gifts, and as the Major card it takes the lead and asks the Knight to plan his charge. The match is closer than it first looks: the Knight can find compromises, and in money matters he is asked to weigh real capabilities against optimism. Fire in both cards makes the energy strong. Temperance's job is to direct it.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Yes

Decisive action backed by patience and judgement, so a bold move lands well.

This is courage with a plan. The upright Knight brings initiative, quick decisions and a willingness to take risks, and upright Temperance adds prudence, flexibility and the habit of thinking actions through. The result is a fast start that does not burn out. A new romance can develop quickly and passionately, and Temperance gives it the mutual respect and equal footing that let it last beyond the first rush. Meeting someone while travelling fits the Knight, and Temperance favours letting the connection settle before big decisions. At work, a new project or technology is introduced with energy and managed with good time management; colleagues catch the enthusiasm. In finances, calculated risks and new ways of earning are favoured, and Temperance's moderate allocation keeps the experiment within what you can afford.

Advice

Commit to the bold step you have been considering, and decide in advance how much time and money you will put in.

Temperance upright, Knight of Wands reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Reckless haste or a sudden loss of drive, steadied by calm, realistic planning.

Energy has gone wrong, either too much of it or too little. The reversed Knight of Wands shows impulsiveness, poor judgement and a gap between what someone wants and what they can do; at work he can also be a sudden collapse of interest and momentum. Upright Temperance is the remedy the reversed Knight asks for: patience with others, realistic planning and peaceful resolution of conflicts. It slows a rush down and coaxes a stalled effort back into motion at a sustainable pace. A passion that flared fast may cool just as fast, and Temperance helps the querent see what the connection is worth without drama. Overloaded with tasks, someone at work needs to pause and redistribute effort. With money, rushed investments call for a step back and a review of past mistakes.

Advice

Pause any decision made in the last week in a rush, and look at it again with figures in front of you.

Temperance reversed, Knight of Wands upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Momentum is strong and moderation is missing, so the risks grow faster than the gains.

The charge is on and nobody is counting the cost. The upright Knight still brings drive, courage and quick decisions; his horse is in the air. Reversed Temperance is the missing brake: excess, impatience, impulsiveness and a habit of overusing resources. In love, a whirlwind attraction sweeps the querent off their feet, and reversed Temperance warns that one partner may give much more than the other, or that the relationship moves too fast to find common ground. At work, a rapid phase of development brings an increased workload, and without moderation it turns into stress and conflict with colleagues. Financially, the Knight's appetite for bold investment meets reversed Temperance's gambling and spending beyond one's means. The opportunities are real, and handling them needs restraint.

Advice

Set a firm limit on the risk you will take this month and ask someone cautious to hold you to it.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Haste, temper and imbalance together lead to quarrels, waste and a likely crash.

Everything runs too hot and too fast, with no steadying hand. Recklessness, aggression, unkept promises and wasted energy come from the reversed Knight, and reversed Temperance piles on loss of control, extremes and an unwillingness to make concessions. Relationships are where it shows first: intense, superficial connections, conflicts started on impulse and a lack of responsibility toward a partner can end in a breakup. In a group, pushiness and tactless behaviour drive people away. Work suffers from hasty decisions that create more problems than they solve, ending in burnout. Money goes on poorly considered investments and uncontrolled spending. The reversed Knight's advice, analyse past mistakes and stop rushing, and reversed Temperance's call for small, careful steps, both point to slowing everything down.

Advice

Make no new commitment, purchase or confrontation for ten days, and use them to cool down and plan.

When this reading may not apply

If the Knight describes another person entering the querent's life, the cards describe how that meeting affects the querent, not what the other person intends; Temperance asks the querent to keep their own balance. A querent who drew the Knight of Wands as significator is the one on the rearing horse, and Temperance counsels planning the charge. In a travel question, the Knight favours the trip and Temperance a well-paced itinerary. For a question about reconciling with an ex, a reversed Knight leans against it, and the pair does not support rushing back. As advice, the upright pair says act now and pace yourself; as an obstacle, it points to haste.
