Strength and Temperance

A woman calms a red lion with her hands; a red-winged angel pours water between two cups, one foot on land and one in a pool. The pair asks whether the querent can keep both their temper and their measure.

How the two cards meet

Two cards of moderation, working at different depths. Strength handles the instinct itself, the lion's jaws held shut by a gentle hand. Temperance handles the mix: the angel stands with one foot on the bank and one in the water, pouring an unbroken stream from cup to cup, a sun on its brow and a path behind it leading up toward two peaks. Strength's picture has distant mountains too, and both cards describe the slow climb toward inner balance. Usually Strength leads with the courage and Temperance sets the pace, which is patient and gradual.

Both cards are Fire, Strength through Leo and Temperance through Sagittarius, so their energies add up and each makes the other more effective. Eight and fourteen make twenty-two, which brings the Fool in as the quintessence: a fresh start that a balanced, healed person can take without fear.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Yes

Self-control and balance together: steady progress, healing and calm that lasts.

Patience runs through both cards and doubles here. Strength masters the querent's passions and fears; Temperance blends opposites into one current and keeps every action moderate. The result is a period of stability and self-healing in which the querent handles complex situations with a cool head. A couple meets as equals, with attraction, respect and shared responsibility, and conflicts are settled through calm dialogue and compromise. A single person may build a connection slowly and well. At work, a long-term project moves forward through consistency, teamwork and gentle leadership, and the balance between work and rest keeps the querent from burning out. Money is managed wisely, with a plan followed patiently and income growing slowly. Health questions lean toward recovery through moderation and routine. Nothing here happens fast, and both cards favour growth that holds over quick gains.

Advice

Pick one area where you overdo things, food, work, screens or spending, and set a moderate limit you can keep for a month.

Strength upright, Temperance reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Life is out of balance, and the querent has the self-control to put it right gradually.

Excess and overload have crept in. Reversed Temperance points to living beyond one's means, an unhealthy workload, quarrels that refuse compromise, or habits that have tipped into dependence. Upright Strength is the corrective, bringing the discipline and calm that reversed Temperance lacks. In a relationship, one partner may be giving far more than the other or arguing without listening, and the querent's maturity and patience can restore some evenness, as long as they also set limits. Work stress, unresolved team conflicts and neglected health call for a pause, and Strength lends enough backbone to drop an overambitious plan. Money needs strict spending discipline, which upright Strength can supply. Reversed Temperance asks for small changes made step by step, a pace that suits Strength's quiet persistence.

Advice

Find the one area with the biggest excess and cut it back by a fixed, small amount each week until it is under control.

Strength reversed, Temperance upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Balance is available, but fear or temper keeps the querent from settling into it.

The angel keeps pouring and the lion has broken loose. Upright Temperance offers moderation, healing and a calm middle path; reversed Strength brings impulsiveness, insecurity or anger that keeps tipping the querent off it. Outbursts can undo weeks of patient work. A relationship may be healthy and balanced while the querent's jealousy or fear of rejection puts it under stress. At work, colleagues and circumstances support steady progress, and the querent's shattered confidence or accumulated stress gets in the way. Impulse spending threatens a sound financial plan. Temperance offers the remedy, slow healing, rest and the habit of moderation, and reversed Strength's call to seek support fits it well. The querent can borrow calm from the routine until their own returns.

Advice

Set a simple daily routine for sleep, food and one quiet half hour, and keep to it for two weeks before judging how you feel.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Excess and lost control: extremes, impulsive choices and quarrels with no middle ground.

Nothing is moderated. Reversed Temperance tips everything into extremes, overload and an inability to compromise, and reversed Strength pours uncontrolled passion, impulsiveness and rage on top. Because both are Fire, the pair amplifies even when reversed, and here it amplifies the damage. Relationships swing between intensity and coldness, with one person dominating and nobody willing to give ground. Overwork or overindulgence wears down the body. Money goes out through gambling, impulse purchases or living beyond one's means. Restraint has to be relearned from the ground up, in small steps, with help wherever a habit has become a dependence. Any quarrel started now is better paused than won, so the first gain is to stop adding fuel.

Advice

Stop one harmful habit this week and get support for it, a doctor, a counsellor or a group, before trying to fix anything else.

When this reading may not apply

For a health or addiction question, upright Temperance often points to recovery through moderation and Strength to the willpower behind it, but the cards support treatment and never replace it. When Temperance stands for a mediator, therapist or coach, Strength shows how well the querent takes their guidance. If the question is about a relationship with someone who has a dependency, reversed Temperance can describe that person's situation, and upright Strength the querent's own boundaries around it. In an advice position the pair is plain: slow down, and do everything in moderation.
