Why do different sources give different birthstones for this month?

Because they are copying different lists without saying which. The modern American list of 1912 and its revisions, older European traditional lists, and various regional lists all disagree, and none of them is an authority over the others. Any page presenting one answer as the birthstone is hiding a real disagreement.

Where did the modern birthstone list come from?

The American National Association of Jewelers agreed a standard list in 1912 so that shops in different states would stock and advertise the same stones. It was revised in 1952, tanzanite was added to December in 2002, and spinel to August in 2016. It is a commercial standard, and it works well as one.

Are all sapphires blue?

Sapphire is corundum in every colour except red, which is called ruby. The familiar blue comes from iron and titanium together, and the family also produces pink, yellow, green, colourless, and the pinkish-orange padparadscha that commands the highest prices among the fancy colours.

Sri Lanka has supplied sapphires from alluvial gem gravels for over two thousand years. Kashmir produced, for roughly forty years from 1881, a velvety cornflower material that still sets the benchmark and now appears mainly at auction. Madagascar became a major source from the 1990s, and Montana produces both alluvial and hard-rock material.

The older lists

Traditional lists agree on sapphire, with lapis lazuli appearing as an alternate in some regional versions, largely because older texts used the word sapphirus loosely and may well have meant lapis in classical sources.

The medieval Christian use is the strongest strand. The sapphire set in the episcopal ring tied the stone to office and to heaven, and the lapidaries following Marbode give it the power to cool internal heat, to preserve chastity, to reconcile enemies and to reveal deceit. It was also thought to protect against envy and to strengthen the wearer's resolve in judgement, which suits a stone worn by a person who has to decide things.

In Jyotish, blue sapphire is neelam, the gem of Saturn, and the tradition treats it as the fastest-acting and most volatile of the nine gems. The traditional practice is to wear it briefly on trial before committing, and an astrologer may advise against it entirely.

What sapphire is actually like to own

One of the best. Hardness 9, excellent toughness, no cleavage, and it takes daily wear in a ring for a lifetime. It can be steam or ultrasonically cleaned if untreated.

Treatment is where the care depends. Heat treatment is applied to most sapphires, is permanent and stable, and is disclosed in reputable trade; untreated stones with good colour command a substantial premium and usually a laboratory report. Beryllium diffusion pushes colour into a surface layer and must be disclosed, since a re-polish can remove it. Fracture-filled material exists and should be kept out of ultrasonic cleaners.

Synthetic sapphire has been produced since 1902 in vast quantity, and most inexpensive blue stones in mass-market jewellery are synthetic. It is a real material, honest when labelled, and curved growth banding under magnification usually identifies it.

If you would rather have something else

Lapis lazuli is the traditional alternate and is a far cheaper way to the same colour, though it is soft and porous.

September covers Virgo and Libra. Zodiac lists give Virgo sapphire, which agrees with the calendar, and Libra opal or lapis.

In Jyotish, Virgo answers to Mercury and emerald, and Libra to Venus and diamond, so neither Vedic prescription matches the month. If a Vedic practitioner did recommend blue sapphire to you, that would come from Saturn's placement in your chart rather than from your birth month, and it would come with the usual caution about testing it first.
