Nine of Pentacles combinations

Comfort earned alone is this card's subject, and the card beside it decides whether that comfort is shared, defended, rested in or only kept up for show. Seventy-eight readings follow, one per card, each with every orientation the two can take.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

The Two of Cups gives the Nine of Pentacles someone to share the vineyard with, and the Five of Swords offers her a quarrel she can afford to skip. Most partners do one of these two things: they bring company into a life the querent has made secure, or they bring trouble to its gate. The card shows a woman in a golden gown standing alone among vines heavy with nine pentacles, a hooded falcon on her gloved hand, her other hand resting on a coin, a snail near her feet and a manor far behind her. Self-sufficiency is the starting point, and the partner decides what it is used for: a family home with the Ten of Pentacles, a sabbatical with the Eight of Cups, a real rest with the Four of Swords.

Sixty-three of the seventy-seven other cards read well beside the upright Nine. Fourteen stay mixed, most of them carrying worry, grief or conflict into the garden, such as the Devil's fear of losing what is owned, the Nine of Swords' sleepless nights and the Five of Pentacles' lean stretch. In those pairs the security holds while the querent's peace of mind does not. Reversed, the Nine becomes comfort kept up for show, spending that outruns income and confidence that has slipped. Beside an upright partner it never reads well, and with both cards reversed sixty-seven pairs read hard.

Nine of Pentacles beside other cards in a spread

Beside Major Arcana cards

Nineteen trumps read well with the upright Nine. The Empress, which shares her Venus, ripens plans into a pleasant home; the Hermit gives earned independence room for quiet reflection; the World brings a long-held goal home to enjoy. The Devil, the Tower and the Moon stay mixed: fear of losing comfort, a shock the security survives, unspoken worries under the calm. A reversed Hierophant, Chariot or Devil reads well beside her. Reverse the Nine instead and Death, the Devil, the Tower and the Moon read hard.

Beside Wands

Fire is neutral to Earth, and a Wand usually gives the Nine's security something to pay for: the Ace's passion project, the Two's next plan, the Eight's offers arriving quickly. The Five alone keeps the upright pair mixed, rivals drawn to a secure position. Reversed under an upright Nine, the Five, Eight and Ten read well as a contest dropped, a delay turned into rest, a load set down, while a reversed Knight of Wands reads hard. With the Nine reversed, the Five, Seven, Nine and Ten read hard.

Beside Cups

Water is friendly to Earth, and the Cups give the vineyard company. The Two joins two people who each stand on their own feet, the Three brings friends to the querent's home, the Ten rests a happy household on money the querent manages. The Four, Five and Seven stay mixed upright: comfort that leaves a question open, a loss mourned in a secure life, daydreams competing with the work that built it. Reversed beside an upright Nine, all three read well; reverse the Nine and they read hard.

Beside Swords

Air works against Earth, and the suit splits in two. The Ace, Two, Four, Six and all four courts read well upright, bringing a clear review of what was built, room to weigh a choice, rest that needs no excuse, a move to quieter ground. The Three, Five, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten stay mixed, security holding while grief, a dispute, a secret or fear presses on it. Reverse any of those six beside the upright Nine and the pair reads well; reverse the Nine and all six read hard.

Beside Pentacles

Among the coins the talk stays on savings, property and work. The Ace opens a new stream of income for finances already standing on their own, the Four keeps saving without touching what holds the querent secure, the Eight is the craft that paid for the vineyard, the Ten widens personal comfort into family security. Only the Five keeps the upright Nine mixed, a lean stretch carried by savings built earlier. Reversed under an upright Nine, that Five reads well as recovery; with the Nine reversed, it reads hard.

Beside court cards

Every court card reads well beside the upright Nine, each describing how the querent holds or uses their security, or how they experience someone near it. The Page of Pentacles brings the confidence to start learning again, the Knight of Cups opens a secure life to romance and art, the King of Swords handles money with a clear head. Turn either card over and the courts drop to mixed, except a reversed Knight of Wands under the upright Nine, which reads hard. With both reversed, all sixteen read hard.

Beside a card of the same number

Nine is the Hermit's number, and two nines total eighteen, so the Moon, card XVIII, is the quintessence beside the Hermit and each Nine. The Hermit adds quiet reflection to a self-sufficient life, the Nine of Wands guards hard-won security with care, and the Nine of Cups satisfies heart and means at once; all three read well upright. The Nine of Swords stays mixed, the security real while the querent lies awake fearing its loss. Two upright copies read well, independence earned twice over.

Beside reversed cards

Only the reversed Knight of Wands turns the upright Nine hard, his reckless moves putting earned comfort at risk. Sixteen read well, each reversal taking away what pressed on the garden. A contest is dropped with the Five of Wands or the Five of Swords, grief or fear lets go with the Five of Cups and the Three, Eight and Nine of Swords, and with the Devil a dependency ends. The other sixty sit in between, security intact and the partner's trouble unresolved.
