Judgment combinations

Judgment turns almost any pair into a decision point: the past is reviewed and something new is called up. This hub gathers card XX's readings with every other card, in each orientation.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Gabriel's trumpet gives the partner card a deadline. Whatever that card describes, a relationship, a job, a debt or a habit, Judgment asks for an honest look at its history and then a decision about the next stage. With both cards upright most pairs read as a calling answered: a second chance with the Two of Cups, a vocation with the Eight of Pentacles, a venture with the Ace of Wands. Justice and Death are the trumps it is most often confused with. Beside Justice the account is settled and a clean slate follows, and beside Death a slow ending finally makes sense. With The World it runs straight on into completion, cards XX and XXI in sequence.

The hard partners are cards of grief, fear and conflict, and even there the trumpet reads as a summons to rise more than a verdict. Reversed, Judgment is the call ignored: guilt, procrastination and old mistakes repeated because the lesson never landed. Upright partners can still carry the matter, though the step keeps getting postponed.

Judgment is Fire, linked to Pluto. Wands share its element, Swords feed it, Pentacles meet it neutrally, and Cups, as Water, are contrary, though forgiveness keeps most Cups pairs warm. In a reconciliation question, the rebirth it offers belongs to the querent.

Judgment beside other cards in a spread

Beside Major Arcana cards

Nearly every upright trump answers Judgment's call in its own way. The Hierophant answers through a vow or formal training, The Hermit after a long review, The Hanged Man once the pause has ripened, Temperance with forgiveness and balance. The Sun lights the awakening, and The World completes it. The Tower and The Moon make the call arrive through a shock or through fog, and beside The Devil it becomes a wake-up call about a dependency.

Beside Wands

Wands share Judgment's Fire, so the call turns into action fast. The Ace starts a venture at once, the Two maps the route, the Eight brings quick news, and the Six and the King put past effort on public record. The Five sets a contest before the new stage, and the Ten asks which part of a heavy load is worth carrying on. The Nine is the last stretch of a long effort, with the call to finish it.

Beside Cups

Water and Fire are contrary, and yet forgiveness makes most upright Cups pairs warm: the Ace is emotional rebirth, the Two old quarrels ended, the Three a reconciliation celebrated, the Ten a family's second chance. The Four, Five and Seven slow the call with apathy, grief or too many options. The Eight is a call to walk away from a life that looks complete and no longer satisfies.

Beside Swords

Air feeds Judgment's Fire, so Swords pairs reach a verdict quickly. The Ace brings a clear truth at the moment of reckoning, the Two a choice that can finally be made, the Six a move toward calmer water, the Queen and King a fair, clear-eyed review of the past. From the Three onward, the Four and Six excepted, the Sword carries the wound, the shortcut or the fear being brought to account, and once reversed beside upright Judgment each of those cards lets go.

Beside Pentacles

Earth meets Judgment's Fire neutrally, and the coins make the reckoning concrete. Past effort is recognised with the Ace and the Nine and becomes lasting security with the Four, while the Eight and the Page turn a calling into skills learned. The Ten settles an inheritance or family matter fairly, and the Six sees what is owed change hands. The Five is a hard season turned into a wake-up call, and the Two juggles old and new worlds through the transition.

Beside court cards

Court cards bring no number to the pair, so there is no quintessence and rank shapes the response to the call. Pages meet it with first steps, questions or a heartfelt message. Knights act on it at their own speed, the Knight of Swords at once and the Knight of Pentacles through patient, reliable work. Queens and Kings make the review mature: the Queen of Cups with compassion, the King of Swords with a reasoned verdict, the King of Pentacles with resources to back the next stage.

Beside a card of the same number

No other card is numbered twenty, so the same-number pair is Judgment twice, a call heard a second time with the review finished and the next stage ready. Twenty reduces to two, as Justice's eleven does, which is why the two trumps echo each other; the High Priestess, card II, shares that root. The four Twos read as choices at a turning point: the Two of Wands maps a route and the Two of Swords ends a long pause.

Beside reversed cards

Upright Judgment does well beside reversed cards of grief and fear. The reversed Five of Cups, Eight of Swords, Nine of Swords and Ten of Swords are already loosening, and the trumpet gives that release a direction. Beside the reversed Devil, freedom from an old attachment opens onto a real fresh start. Beside most other reversed cards the call still sounds while the partner holds it back, as with a reversed World leaving loose ends or a reversed Sun leaving the querent too tired to rise.

Judgment with every card

Each row gives the outlook in all four states, read from Judgment's side: Judgment first, then its partner.
