The Magician and the Six of Pentacles

A merchant holds a pair of scales and drops coins into a kneeling man's hand, while the Magician points one hand up and one hand down. The pair is about what you give, what you receive, and who decides the terms.

How the two cards meet

The Six of Pentacles is a card of exchange: a well-dressed man weighs coins on a balance and gives to two people kneeling at his feet. The Magician is a card of influence and communication, the person who knows how to steer a situation. Together they describe a negotiation, a contract, a loan, a fee or a mentor's support, and the Magician's role decides whether the scales stay level. He leads as the Major card; the Six shows the arrangement he is working within.

Talk and money move at different speeds here (Air and Earth are contrary elements), so any agreement needs to be put in concrete terms. The Chariot, card VII, is the quintessence, adding drive and direction: the exchange is meant to take somebody somewhere, and it pays to know where.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Yes

Skill meets fair reward: a good deal, a mentor or support given and received on equal terms.

Talent and fairness line up. The Magician brings initiative, clear communication and the confidence to state his terms, and the Six of Pentacles sees that the exchange is balanced. Negotiating a contract, asking for a raise, finding a mentor or sharing knowledge with a team suit this state, and the Six adds reward and recognition for a job well done, perhaps a bonus or a new opportunity. Some readers see the querent as the merchant here, in a position to help others with skill or money, and the Magician encourages doing it with judgment rather than impulse. For a couple, the pair describes generosity on both sides and a partner who takes the lead without overstepping the other's dignity. Repayment of a loan, a return on funds invested earlier or the transfer of documents can go smoothly.

Advice

Prepare the figures for what your work is worth and raise them in your next conversation about pay or terms.

The Magician upright, Six of Pentacles reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

You bring the skill, but the exchange is lopsided: effort goes unpaid or help has strings attached.

Someone is holding the scales, and it is not the querent. The reversed Six of Pentacles describes an unequal exchange: work that is not paid fairly, a loan with hidden conditions, or recognition that never arrives. The upright Magician has what this situation needs, namely the confidence to name the imbalance and the communication skills to negotiate it, and his card favours taking responsibility for one's own terms. Partners may find one person investing heavily while the other gives little back; the Magician urges an honest, direct conversation about that. At work, the querent may carry a disproportionate share of the load, and the pair favours either renegotiating or looking for a place that values the work. Offers of help deserve a question about motive before they are accepted. The exchange works once the balance is restored.

Advice

Ask for the conditions of any loan, offer or arrangement in writing before you agree to it.

The Magician reversed, Six of Pentacles upright

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

Help is offered fairly, but you are not yet able to use it well and may lean on it too much.

The coins are falling into open hands. Support, a gift, a mentor or a fair loan is available through the upright Six of Pentacles. The reversed Magician is a person who overestimates their abilities or leans too heavily on outside help, and who may not have the skills to turn what is given into something lasting. There is a risk of dependence: help received, spent, and needed again. The reversed Magician asks the querent to learn, acknowledge past mistakes and consult someone with expertise, and the Six makes that kind of guidance easy to find. In a relationship, a partner's generosity may be steady while the querent feels insecure or avoids taking part in shared decisions. At work, support from senior colleagues is there for anyone willing to use it as training. Help is worth most once it becomes learning.

Advice

When you accept help, agree at the same time on what you will be able to do on your own afterwards.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: No

Charm used to take, and an exchange rigged from the start: exploitation, debt or fraud.

Generosity is being used as a tool. The reversed Magician's dishonesty and misuse of power meet the reversed Six's power play, strings attached and abuse of kindness. A loan with terms nobody read, a charity that is not what it claims, or a partner who turns charm into a weapon to get money or favours all belong here. The querent can be on either side of it, so honesty about one's own motives matters as much as caution about others. Trust in a relationship erodes when one person keeps score or gives only to control. At work there may be exploitation, a conflict of interest or a bonus that was mentioned once and never paid. Expenses exceed income, debts grow, and the pair warns of fraud in business dealings. Stepping back from any arrangement that cannot be explained plainly is the safe course.

Advice

Refuse any deal that has to be decided today, and get an independent opinion on the paperwork before signing.

When this reading may not apply

If the Emperor also appears, the Six's scales can describe a rigid power imbalance, and the Magician then asks the querent to state their needs clearly instead of waiting to be given what someone else decides. In a position about what to let go, the pair says stop putting time or money into arrangements that never give back. When the querent is the one giving, the Magician can describe a mentor or an employer, and the reversed cards then speak about how the querent treats others.
