The Hierophant and the King of Wands

Two seated men of authority, one leaning forward on a throne carved with lions and salamanders, one still between grey pillars. The pair asks what happens when a visionary leader and an established order need each other.

How the two cards meet

Both cards show authority on a throne. The King of Wands leans forward in side profile, his salamanders closed into a circle, his wand planted between ground and sky; he is the entrepreneur, the experienced manager, the person whose plans other people carry out. The Hierophant holds authority by office and handing on what is known. As the Major card he sets the terms, and the King shows how a strong will behaves within them: as a leader the institution promotes, as a founder who leaves it, or as a tyrant.

There is a correspondence the two share. The Hierophant's path is the letter Vau, drawn into the crest of his tiara, and the King of Wands is the Vav of the divine name. Both are links between a higher principle and the world. The King's Fire and the Hierophant's Earth are neutral, and his green shoes and budding wand already let some Earth into his fiery palette.

Combinations are common patterns, not rules

The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.

Four ways the pair can fall

Both upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Yes

Earned authority meets a respected institution, and ambition is promoted through proper channels.

Vision and tradition work together. The King is the experienced professional who has earned a high position through hard work, and the Hierophant is the organisation that grants recognition based on accumulated experience. Promotion, a senior appointment, a board seat or a role as mentor to younger staff all fit. For an entrepreneur, the King's appetite for expansion meets the Hierophant's preference for a proven business model, which is a sound way to grow: ambitious targets with a realistic assessment behind them. In a relationship, a mature, protective partner who speaks directly about feelings and the Hierophant's wish for formal commitment point toward marriage or a shared household. Money comes through a successful deal or steady investment. Respect flows both ways. The King also favours managers who apply accumulated skills in practice, and the Hierophant's habit of training others gives him a way to pass those skills on, so a querent at this point may find that teaching a successor is part of the next promotion.

Advice

Ask for the senior role or the larger project now, and bring your record of results with you.

The Hierophant upright, King of Wands reversed

Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yet

An overbearing boss or a leader who hesitates; the institution's rules are the protection.

Someone in charge is misusing the role. The reversed King may be a hostile or dishonest boss who blocks advancement, a micromanager, or the querent's own impatience and urge to control everything. In a quieter version he lacks the courage to make tough decisions and his plans scatter. Against either, the upright Hierophant stands for recognized standards, written procedures and the mentors an organisation keeps for exactly this. Formal channels, a code of conduct, a senior adviser outside the chain of command: these restore order. A partner who dominates and ignores the other's needs is not ready for the formal commitment the Hierophant asks about, and counsel helps before any vows. Financially, overconfidence and ignored advice cause setbacks; conservative management repairs them.

Advice

If a superior is the problem, put the issue in writing to the proper office; if you are, ask a mentor to review your last three decisions.

The Hierophant reversed, King of Wands upright

Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Leans yes

A strong leader breaks with the old institution and builds something of his own.

A founder appears the moment the King stops waiting for the temple's approval. The reversed Hierophant is rebellion against established norms, rejection of authority and liberation from old customs; the upright King adds independence, entrepreneurship and a fight for rights and freedom. Together they describe the founder who leaves a large company, the reformer who challenges a rigid institution and wins people over, or a querent ready to stop asking permission. Love can take an unconventional form led by a mature, decisive partner who sets the direction openly. The danger is the reversed Hierophant's money warning. Excessive rule-breaking and rash decisions cause instability, and the King's own advice to pair ambition with a realistic look at capabilities is the remedy. His closed salamander circle suggests the staying power to finish what he starts.

Advice

Decide which rules your new venture will keep before you announce the ones it breaks.

Both reversed

Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: Leans no

Dogma and tyranny together: control for its own sake, or two authorities too rigid to act.

Power has lost its purpose. With both cards reversed, dogmatism and narrow-mindedness join despotism, intolerance and a dislike for criticism, which is the picture of an authoritarian workplace, a domineering head of the family or a leader nobody dares question. Partners suffer stubbornness, aggression and a clash of values, and warmth drains out as one person's control grows. Communication breaks down because nobody listens. Sometimes the cards show the opposite failure: indecision, passivity and a leader afraid to lead, propped up by rules that stopped working long ago. Money is lost through ignored financial advice, or through trusting bad advice from authority figures. The reversed King's recommendation applies to both men: show tolerance, allow flexibility and accept help.

Advice

Name one decision you have been forcing on others and hand it to the people it affects.

When this reading may not apply

When the King describes a person, he is often an entrepreneur running his own business or a senior manager, and the Hierophant is the institution or tradition he answers to; a question about a family business reads especially clearly. If the querent is the King, the Hierophant shows the rules and elders he has to work with or against. In a legal question, the Hierophant's ties to law and the King's decisiveness favour pressing a case through the proper procedure. With the Hierophant reversed in an advice position, the pair encourages independence, never contempt for people who stay inside the system.
