The Knight of Cups and the Seven of Swords
A knight rides with his face uncovered and a cup held out; a man in a fez tiptoes from a camp with five swords. The pair weighs sincerity against secrecy.
How the two cards meet
Nothing in the Knight of Cups is hidden. He rides with the lower guard of his helmet raised so his face shows, and the gold cup he extends is the whole of his message. Smith's Seven of Swords is the opposite temperament: a man in a polka-dot tunic, fez and soft red boots tiptoes away from a military camp, five swords bundled against him by their bare blades, looking back at two left planted in the ground while three small figures talk by the tents.
The Seven usually sets the terms, a situation run on strategy, discretion or concealed motives, and the Knight shows the feeling the querent brings into it. Upright, the Knight is sincerity and diplomacy, and the pair asks how much openness the situation can bear. Reversed, he carries deceit and unrealistic fantasy of his own, and the Seven's secrecy finds an ally instead of a counterweight.
Combinations are common patterns, not rules
The readings here describe how a pair most often reads. Check each one against two things before you apply it. The first is the question: the same pair says one thing about a relationship and another about a job offer, and the question decides which side of the pair matters. The second is the background, meaning what the querent already knows about the situation, the position each card holds in the spread, and the cards around the pair. When the question or the background points another way, go with them over the general reading. Each pair page lists the exceptions that come up most often.
Four ways the pair can fall
Both upright
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: Not yetSincere feeling enters a situation run on tactics, and good faith needs a careful eye on the details.
Good faith has to work alongside discretion here. The upright Knight offers romance, kindness and a readiness to find common ground, while the Seven brings strategy, discretion and the possibility that not everything is on the table. Tact and tactics can work together: the querent may need both feeling and a quiet plan to reach a goal. A romance kept private, for whatever reason, fits this state, and the Seven's choice between openness and evasion lands on the querent; the Knight's wish for real understanding argues for openness. At work, the Knight's diplomacy pairs well with the Seven's independent, unconventional thinking on a demanding task. A promising offer may arrive, and the Seven warns to read every clause of the contract, since deception around money remains possible. The querent's own idealism is the vulnerable spot.
Advice
Before you commit to an attractive offer, check one claim in it with someone who has no stake in the deal.
Knight of Cups upright, Seven of Swords reversed
Outlook: Harmonious Yes or no: Not yetA secret comes into the open, and kindness lets the querent face the truth and start again.
What was hidden is surfacing, and the cup is held out at the right moment. The reversed Seven means exposure, confession and coming clean, while the upright Knight brings compassion and a wish to share joys and sadness openly. If the querent has kept something back, now is the time to say it with care; if the querent learns something unwelcome, the Knight's emotional depth helps them take it in without drama. A relationship weighed down by secrecy can clear the air through one honest conversation, painful as it may be. Self-deception lifts too, as the querent admits what they have wanted. At work, a failed plan or a concealed problem comes out, and the Knight's easy way with the team helps repair the damage. Money decisions improve once hidden information is checked, and a slower, reliable agreement replaces a shortcut.
Advice
Say the thing you have been keeping back to the person it concerns, choosing a calm moment and plain words.
Knight of Cups reversed, Seven of Swords upright
Outlook: Challenging Yes or no: NoCharm and concealment reinforce each other, and the risk of deception, given or received, runs high.
Charm turns into cover here. The reversed Knight brings deceit, infidelity and fantasies that lose touch with reality, and the upright Seven brings hidden agendas, evasion and self-deception. Feelings become a cover story, or the querent tells themselves a flattering version of events because the facts are uncomfortable. In love, the pair can describe a hidden connection or a relationship where trust is in question; the querent can only judge their own conduct and the facts they can verify, and should avoid acting on suspicion alone. At work, diplomacy has broken down, responsibility gets shifted, and the querent's emotional reactions make a tense situation worse. A seemingly attractive deal could turn out to be deceptive, and the reversed Knight's hope of a quick payout runs straight into the Seven's warning about deceptive proposals and contracts. Clear intentions and honest dealing are the only protection the querent controls.
Advice
Verify every claim that affects your money or your trust before you act on it, and keep your own dealings above board.
Both reversed
Outlook: Mixed Yes or no: NoAn illusion breaks as hidden things come out, painful at first and clearing the ground afterwards.
The reversed Seven exposes and the reversed Knight is disillusioned, so a dream built on partial truths falls apart. Shattered dreams, drama and disappointment come with it, and the querent may feel foolish for having believed what they wanted to believe. The gain is clarity. A romance that rested on an idealised image is seen as it is, and whatever deceit there was, on either side, is out in the open, so the querent can decide with facts in hand. At work, a plan that was never properly developed fails, and the querent may need help from colleagues or specialists to recover. Losses from insufficient research or impulsive spending are likely, and the reversed Knight's call for expert advice applies. The reversed Seven still counts this period as good for long-term growth, once the querent stops defending the old picture.
Advice
Ask someone you trust to go over the facts with you, and decide nothing important until the disappointment has settled.
When this reading may not apply
If the Knight is taken as a suitor or a charming colleague, the pair shows how the querent experiences that person's attention alongside a sense that something is withheld; it never tells the querent what that person intends, and suspicion needs facts before action. If the querent is the one keeping a secret, the Seven's orientation shows whether it is about to surface. In an advice position, the upright Seven can mean discretion is wise, for example around a creative project not ready to be shown.
